In addition to degree certificates, all three institutions issue a Diploma Supplement, which is a document jointly designed by the EU, the Council of Europe and UNESCO to provide information about the studies completed by the student; the status of the degree awarded; and the qualification provided by the degree for further studies and employment.

DEGREES Full-time studies for a Bachelor’s degree can last three to four years, with the extent of the degree being 180 – 240 credits. The studies for a Master’s degree takes two years, with the extent being 120 credits in the University level and 1 to 2 years with the extent being 60 to 90 credits in the University of Applied Sciences. The postgraduate degrees are Licentiate (2 years) and Doctoral (4 years) degrees, with Doctoral studies closely linked to research work done

COSTS In Finland, there are no tuition fees in degree awarding programmes, however, some nominal fees may apply to nondegree programmes. The cost of living can vary between 500 and 800 euros­per month.


HOSPITALITY OF NORTHERN FINLAND Our higher education institutions in Finnish Lapland are renowned for their friendly hospitality. With high teacher to student ratios, and modern student services provided in English, complemented with individual tutoring and advanced learning facilities, we offer our students the best learning environment possible. Teaching is provided in up-to-date study facilities with research tools such as free access to well equipped computer labs and libraries which are at every student’s disposal. Our campuses and housing companies offer student accommodation at reasonable prices. Campuses have various catering outlets and sports facilities with special student prices. A variety of indoor and outdoor activities are organised by student organisations. In addition to services on campus, we offer several services off campus. For example personal student advisory services are offered. Many of our academic staff members are fluent in English, whilst the language is widely spoken in society.

Your personal safety is a valued issue. The crime rate is low in Finland in comparison with most other European countries. Visitors have little need to fear for their personal safety or their property. Finland is by international standards a safe, tolerant and open nation where inappropriate behaviour does not usually occur. KEMI-TORNIO UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences was established in August 1992. Currently there are about 2,500 students and a staff of approximately 260. The degree programmes are designed to meet the changing requirements and development needs of the world of work, having a pronounced professional emphasis, and qualifying graduates for various expert duties. PROFILE The most important task of Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences is to train entrepreneurially spirited, highly skilled people, who understand the conditions and possibilities of the North. RESEARCH The competence strategy of Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences is based on four fields of expertise; Industrial Lapland, Lapland of Wellbeing, Lapland of Experiments and Culture, and Lapland of Business and Entrepreneurship. Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences provides education for young people and adults leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The guiding principles of the University of Applied Sciences’ Curriculum are internationalisation, multidisciplinary studies, professional skills and placement of studies in working life. The University is made up of six education units which specialise in different fields of studies: Business, Administration, ICT, Cultural and Media Arts, Health Care, Social Services and Engineering Technology.

ROVANIEMI UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences (RAMK) is located in the city of Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle in Lapland Province in Finland. It is the northernmost higher professional education institution in the European Union. RAMK was created in 1996. It has about 3,000 students and a staff of 300 in three campuses. PROFILE RAMK functions as an influential multidisciplinary operator in the north by focusing on the development of tourism and conditions that affect tourism. This focal area is approached through the development of service production and business operations, health promotion and well-being, diversified sustainable utilisation of the northern environment and development of cold climate technology.

ACADEMIC EDUCATION AND INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES RAMK provides education in Business and Administration, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Technology, Forestry and Rural Industries and Health Care and Sports. There are 14 different degree programmes on bachelor’s level and 5 on master’s level. Degree Programmes in Tourism, Innovative Business Services, Information Technology and one year’s specialization programme International Project Management are offered entirely in English. Studies are comprised of theoretical professional studies as well as practical training and theses. Northernness is for us one opportunity to specialize internationally. RAMK has active student, staff and teacher mobility and participates in many international projects. RAMK has numerous cooperating partners in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia.

UNIVERSITY OF LAPLAND The University of Lapland, located in the city of Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle, is an international university of science and art. It is the most northern university in Finland and the European Union. It was established in 1979 and currently has 4,800 students and a staff of 630 in four faculties.

PROFILE As a research-based higher education institution, teaching and research facilities of the University offer students and scholars the opportunity to pursue academic excellence, at all levels – all the way up to PhD studies – in the fields of arctic issues, tourism, art and design, law, education, and the social sciences. THE INSTITUTES Interested in developing your expertise in tourism or culture? Our Institutes – the Lapland Institute for Tourism Research and Education and the Institute for Northern Culture – are the choice for you!

Tourism and culture are the mutual area of expertise of the institutions making up the Lapland University Consortium: Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences, Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences and the University of Lapland. The three institutions have joined forces with regional vocational schools and set up two joint institutes. LAPLAND INSTITUTE FOR TOURISM RESEARCH AND EDUCATION The Lapland Institute for Tourism Research and Education is a unique community of expertise. It combines all the stages of tourism education with innovative research and development activities. The institute is formed by the University of Lapland (Tourism Research), Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences (Tourism and Hospitality Management), and the Lapland Tourism College (Tourism, Catering and Domestic Services). The Institute advances tourism education and research in close cooperation with business life, the international scientific community, educational organizations, and public authorities in Lapland. As a promoter of the tourism sector, the institute spearheads the development of the entire industry. INSTITUTE FOR NORTHERN CULTURE The Institute for Northern Culture develops the production of culture and nurtures heritage through a network consisting of educational organizations at three different levels and a range of cultural actors. The Institute builds Lapland’s vitality and welfare in cooperation with educational organizations, researchers, and actors in the art world. The core of the Institute for Northern Culture is formed by the Faculty of Art and Design of the University of Lapland, the Field of Visual and Media Arts of Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences, and the Field of Culture of the Lappia Vocational College.
