President's Message
Dear Rancher, We’ve just wrapped our second, very successful auction of the year where NAFA has, once again, solidified our role as a market trendsetter and industry leader. We’re extremely proud that the results generated during our March auction were consistently firm to slightly advancing in nearly every color and mink variety, in what has recently been a down trending market. This is a huge accomplishment! Our March sale not only helped to restore a strong level of confidence in our industry, but also helped to re-establish price integrity to the trade. We sold over 4 million high quality ranch mink during our sale, and we’ve now moved over 7 million mink in total since January. The majority of our consignors have sold over 85% of their regular mink to this point. From an operational standpoint, this is a North American record. Our success in this sale was made possible by both our incredibly hardworking staff, and by the significant investments we’ve made over the past few years in our technical and non-technical equipment, which have done a great deal to help us grow as a company. We were also able to achieve these results because of our continued ability to draw buyers from all around the world. Our ongoing and tireless marketing efforts helped to bring in more Chinese buyers to our March sale, as well as our strongest Korean attendance in a long time. We welcomed 31 Korean buyers in the auction room, along with the support of the rest of the world. Further, as part of our continuing commitment to provide the best service to our loyal customers, we made significant strides leading up to this sale to improve our online digital auction platform for our worldwide buyer community. We increased the speed of our Broadcast Service Lot Board by a factor of four, dropping Internet delay between North America and points of presence in China to under one and a half seconds. This technology provides our customers with live auction results translated into Chinese, including pertinent details on the last five lots sold. We will continue to improve these services to make it easy for buyers anywhere in the world to follow and participate in our live auction. New developments include a remote Lot Board App, currently in its testing phase, which will be available for smartphones and tablets by the end of June. We’re proud to have held what buyers have described as “a very professionally managed, well-run auction”, despite the market uncertainty leading into it. It was also noted by many how well our new, young auctioneers are performing to ensure a viable future for our company. It cannot be left unsaid that the biggest factor to our success is you, our shippers. We’re honoured to represent the strongest and most successful mink farmers in the world, who continue to provide us with a calibre of product that is unmatched. A New Chapter for Denis Schmitt
After 26 years of dedicated service to both NAFA and our predecessor, the Hudson’s Bay Company, we would like to congratulate Denis Schmitt on a well-deserved retirement. Denis formally stepped down as Senior Vice President, Ranch Relations on April 1, 2015. Having grown up on a family mink farm in Ohio, Denis has spent nearly his entire career in the fur industry. After earning his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1970, Denis returned to the family farm. In 1974, he joined Kal Kan Pet foods (now Pedigree) in Columbus, Ohio as purchasing manager for raw materials, and in 1977, he and his two brothers bought into the family mink farm. Denis sold his interest in the farm to his brother David and joined the then Hudson's Bay Co. in 1989. In 1992, he was named Vice President of Ranch Relations, and in 2013 he was named Senior Vice President, Ranch Relations.
Denis’ many years of service were recognized at the NAFPI reception on Monday, March 30, 2015.
Denis has spent his career working with producers all across North America. He was instrumental in the formation of NAFPRO, our pelt processing plant, and throughout his career, he remained at the forefront of the ranching community in both the U.S. and Canada. Denis will continue on in his role as executive director of the American Mink Council. He also plans to travel with his wife, and spend more time with his children and grandchildren. On behalf of the entire team at NAFA, we wish Denis all the best in his retirement. Though his presence will be missed, his valuable contributions will be felt for years to come.

NAFA’s Grading: The Best & Most Reliable in the Entire Business!
Today’s global fur market demands a very high level of uniformity. Each combination of underfur, nap, type, and guard hair density is considered a separate quality class, each of which has its own specific processing and usage in fur garments. Sorting mink properly requires an extensive grade division of different mink qualities. NAFA’s four-step grading procedure offers just that! At the foundation of this process are NAFA’s skilled and experienced fur technicians. They implement quality grading of all mink skins according to the four-step grading procedure:

This procedure is very labor-intensive, and it requires that skins be judged by at least four independent fur technicians. The final result is mink collections with the sharpest and most reliable quality borderlines in the entire business. "One of the biggest advantages that makes our grading system so successful is that it allows us to maximize the talents of our technicians and place them in areas where they excel best,” says Gregg Dolinsky, NAFA’s Senior Vice President of Operations. “This also creates a more efficient production system”. As such, buyers can trust that catalogue descriptions are a clear match to the goods that are being sold. This assurance allows NAFA to successfully offer and sell our fur collections, not only in our auction room in Toronto, but moreover via remote buying - an exciting development that we expect to expand and increase over the next few years.

New Auction Report Format
To offer you more insight in NAFA’s auction results, we have developed a new detailed price report. We began publishing this price report format on the NAFA website after each day of our March auction. The report is broken down by size, grade, and individual nap. This new addition gives an even better insight into the price structure of mink and the demand preferences of the fur trade today. It also improves the display structure of NAFA’s mink collections. We encourage you to analyze the results carefully. This report format will certainly assist you in translating auction results into breeding management on your farm, and will allow you to focus on more than just an average. Most importantly, these reports will allow you to see how the sales results will impact your bottom line. We will continue to examine ways in which we can make this report even more relevant to your sales results and farm management practices.
