“Craftman is everyone had the gift to dedicate all his life to a practise he is radically connect to and is very pasioneted about. He has a special care for the product of his work, that becames object of continues polishment and of an in depht cultural knowledge. So, the Craftman needs an intimate place where to spend time with his own intrests: writing and wine. As a consequence, his house cannot be but a sort of private den, separated from all the rest of the world, according to the model of St. Jerome in His Study. In a minimum space, the study of an artist rapresents the richness and the complexity of a new universe and its metamorphosis. But at the same time, as long as its own work belongs to the earth he is born, Craftman’s house rapresents something born from topograpy of wineyards, natural slopes, terracements, deeply radicated into a tradition, ultimately, according to Siza, an archeological reinterpretation of the site.

Building in an historical city such as Porto makes us reflect on the nature itself of an urbanistic shape, consequentely, the analysis of the atelier was focused on the developement of a well distingued historical context across the different periods of its history and the necessity that the project can relate in an effective way with the urban scale. Cities themselves are born and continue growing across ages as a sort of collage, so that, this was the basic insight under all our work for developing the collective masterplan we succesivly followed in individual projects. Urban morphology, tipology and tectonics were the strongest elements in the reflection that led to the definition of the new intervention. A strong structure gives the building a well-defined character and identifies an uniformity of language across different urban conditions. This complex universe is then populated by a series of independent and interacting ecosystems: an articulated circulation provided different levels of intimacy, where the need to guarantee individuality and create a new community can dialogue. This plurality is also underlined by the tectonic itself: an extremely plastic, materic concrete structure, contrasting with fexible and light abitative units.

The main aim of this first project during BSc 1 was to densify the village of Bignasco, offering an alternative way of building and life to the current urban sprawl, avoiding the waste of land and preserving the natural landscape. Density may be the way to show how a very small and economic building can be extremely effective and offer a high standard of life. The paradigm of patio house offers the opportunity to create both big open spaces for privates, where every one can find his intimacy and privacy, having nice landscape views, and public spaces where inhabitants have the opportunity to feel the meaning of living as real comunity. All drawings were executed by hand.

The team work of the first BSc semenster was conceived to be followed by a further research in the field of densification, with the main principe that a responsible architecture must avoid waste of land and materials. During the second semenster, we had the opportunity to focus on the distributive issues concerning the theme of housing. Main thoughts were about individuation of proper solar exposure, maintenience of privacy, coherence of design, innovative relationship between common and intimate spaces of the house, which becames in this sense a sort of small city. New compositive possibilities were offered by the introduction of double height space, the relationship between space and structure, the choices in organization of the paths through different areas of the house, the clare individuation of specific characters for each kind of space and its function.

The born of new project intuition is always very strictly conncected to the knowledge of the complexive culture and of the richness of the history of architecture. As a consequence, before starting the developement our own project, we were introduced to the consciousness of the necessity of studying buildings that could be adopted as precious references for the growth of concepts we were working on, as long as they are dealing with the same themes every architect has to debate into his practice. Redrawing and rebuilding becomes a way of studying a design in all its details. The casas patio by Souto de Moura are a complex of ten villas, developing innovative concepts in the distribuition of public and private areas, in the management of light, in the interaction between outer and inner spaces. In particular, casas patio are the contemporain reinterpretation of a traditional patter of local architecture; working in an urban context is also a rich opportunity to understand how a project could work with typologies and topography.

The analysis of precedent architectures as case studies is aimed to offer strong elements and new sources of inspiration in the design of new one. Tower BBPR shows in an extremely effective way the metodology this architects group based in Milan adopted in coping with a very well defined historical context. The design intuition is never arbitrary, but tries to create a narration based oth on tectonics, urban morphology and tipology. In this sense, a pillar structure permits to open a large colonnade at street level, in analogy with one of the main themes of traditional italian housing; facade is at the same time regular and articulated, and presents high plastic qualities both in the general design and in the constructive details; the tectonic system is clearly shown in its structure, but this does not prevent the free articulation of a very modern floorplan. So that, group BBPR teaches us that a new modern building can create a strong dialectic relationship with its historical context, not trying to imitate it, but being conscious of the richness and complexity of the knowledge of architecture.

One of the main prejudices of architects is of being able to create meaningful spaces by the only composition of shapes, volumes, lights, materials. On the opposite, we have to observe like in architecture no character of space is really meaningful, but the memory of human experience that takes place inside it. So that, I decided to tell the history of a very luxurious three-floors penthouse set in one of the most exclusive areas of my city, Verona, showing the contrast between such an elegant project and the richness of the universe it tries to create and the human tragedy in which all the members of the family that lived inside this apartment were involved. By drawing and writing a short text, I had the opportunity to analise what was the real meaning of the design of this apartment, what it really wants to tell, namely, a physical materialization of the insane personality of the owner, the transformation of building during the time, the sensations it creates to people living inside according to all the memories connected.

Architecture is not only a matter of aesthetics or the compositionn of abstract volumes, but, also, the ipothesys of a building process and its successive effective realization. As long as this, the design of a shape must be coherent to the choice of materials and to the design of constructive details, that cannot be ignored in the conception of a building, but, on the other side, all details can contribue to make the original intuition stronger and to make our first concept grow. Furthermore, architectonic intuition itself may be inspired by this kind of details, creating a coherent system and a sort of pattern language. We analysed the case study of Casa Spazio by Peppo Brivio. In that sense, having to deal with a project like this can give to a student important tools in a field that should be felt as really contemporary such as the renovation of a XX century housing interventions.

The practise of architecture means also the ability of comunicate the concept of our projects to a larger public. So that, the main aim of the course of digital rapresentation is learning how an idea could be expressed using diagrams, drawings or images that could be really useful to show the main concept of a project. The strenth of an image, in fact, is to adopt a sort of universal language, that can express the atmosphere of a space or the real life in a neighborough also to people didn’t study the tecnics of architectural drawing. The knowledge of how to set a meaningful image was developed with the help of profesional photographers, who teached us, for example, how a render could be not only developed as the product of a digital model, but as a real architecture photo. So that, digital rapresentation is mainly not a matter of technical ability, but of effectivity of conceptual comunication.

Since Fritz Lang rapresents one of the milestones of classical european film tradition, the vision of one of his masterpieces becames a rich instrument for the comprehension of a past historical reality, as long as an opportunity to analise the world of films thecnics and the multiple choices that a filmaker can adopt to relate to the space of architecture and cities. Redwawing a single frames gives the chance to make a really in depht analysis of that image: painting becomes a way of knowledge of the actual universe we are observing, no details in volume, shapes, shadows, graphics, can be ignored. M is a black and white film: in that sense, learn new paintings technics leads to the necessity of reconstruct the original atmosphere of the scene, making ipothesis about colours, lights, movement. The comprehension of a scene becames a way to make the meaning of a past reality and its human drama alive again.

Academic path tends to be based on experiences of design and model making, which are aimed to rapresent a reality (the one of the ultimated building) that has a different scale and a separated identity from them. The experience of a performance is, in that sense, something alive in itself, fully indipendent, not the rapresentation of something else. On the other hand, the concept we have about reality is always narrow related to the preshence of our body and its movement inside space, so that a collective performance can offer the opportunity of a new scale of experiences. During fall, we developed aerophone instruments, designing them according to the study of their tradition and personal elaborations of a large range of geometric compositions, and played them together in a coreography creating a symphony of different frequences. During spring, we discovered the world of graphics and automations: every student had the opportunity to develop a personal texture to draw an alphabet, the combination of all the machines our alphabets were st on was aimed to generate words randomly.
