LUCA DE STEFANO
Born in Rome - 22/03/1990 Italian Master of science in Architecture
ABOUT ME
I am originally from Rome, but I completed most of my architectural education abroad, between Spain and The Netherlands. I get inspired when I see something good. It doesn’t matter what it is. It can be a dish incredibly cooked or a beautiful drawing. As soon as I see it, I feel the need to cook or draw. Might be some kind of spirit of emulation, or maybe I’m just very competitive.
ABOUT THIS PORTFOLIO
This portfolio aims to be more than a simple collection of works. It is meant to be a true representation of my capabilities in architecture, therefore some of the university projects I developed till the year 2015 are hereby presented in combination with students competitions and specific skills. To better identify each category, they have been marked in this portfolio with different icons.

GOLDEN RUSH
2050 MEX-US BORDER HYPER SPEED RAILWAY
- Location: North America - Program: Freight Train Lines + Mobility Train Lines - Year: 2014 - Institution: TU Delft - Tutors: Mitesh Dixit, James Westcott, Sven Jansse, Hrvoje Smidihen
In order to boosts the potential growth of an hypothetical border macro-region, a wide-ranging research has been carried out. Drawing upon the information collected, I designed a new trans-border train line, which adopts Mag-lev technology to increase cost efficiency and reduce traveling time. The new line was planned as part of a network, connecting the main urban and commercial hubs of the region with existing and planned tracks in the rest of the continent. The land acquisition is reduced to the minimum due to the use of border land and existing infrastructure. Moreover the train line was also designed from an ideological point of view, in order to generate a positive perception of the train as a symbol. Therefore the train was coated in gold and it was named “Golden Rush, to recall a shared positive history between the two counties and the possibility of a common successful future. 6

THE GENERIC MONUMENT - BORDER TRAIN STATION
- Location: El Paso, USA / Juarez, Mex - Rio Grande Ditch - Program: Train Station + Events Space + Office - Year: 2015 - Institution: TU Delft - Tutors: Mitesh Dixit, James Westcott, Sven Jansse, Hrvoje Smidihen
The design consists of a shared train station facility for the border cities of El Paso and Juarez. It resulted into an open ground floor, freely accessible from both sides, with flexible space for civic events, in order to blur the limits of the open station and create urban continuity. Over the ground level, the national platforms and the Golden Rush headquarters are enclosed into a squared concrete volume, generic and neutral in terms of shape and materiality, in order to show no ideological positioning on site. The building is therefore defined “Generic Monument. The volume is continuously perforated by the same openings everywhere, which are later closed with different materials according to the functions underneath. The only variation in the concrete body of the building is the violent cut that celebrates the border and the Golden Rush international platforms placed in the ditch of the Rio Grande River. The cut provides also a functional void. 10

THE MONSTER
JOINING GATED COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL HOUSING
- Location: Chandigarh, India - Program: Gated Community + Social Housing + Parking + Shops - Year: 2014 - Institution: TU Delft - Tutors: Nelson Mota, Tom Avermaete, Dick van Gameren - Team: Justin Frank, Martin Fernandez de Cordoba
The city of Chandigarh is experiencing an extreme disrupture. Most of the middle class population is now moving to gated communities, normally located in complete isolation in the periphery of the city, where the land cost is more affordable. In the same way most of the social housing is situated in the extreme limit of the city, far from the areas of the gated communities and from the city center. The city center remains the main commercial hub, while the housing program is mainly located to the historical settlements. As a consequence urban interaction is extremely poor and long traveling times cause traffic congestions and poor public transport service. To face this condition “The Monster provides a solution to bring together all the different users in the same location. The high density of the building allows different users to coexist and provides a convenient investment also on very high value lands. 20

THE BAZAR
RETHINKING THE MARKET THROUGH TRADITION
- Location: Istanbul, Turkey - Program: Market, Library, Enclosed garden - Year: 2014 - Institution: TU Delft - Tutors: Jorge Mejia Hernandez - Team: Shuting Tao, Daan van Markus
The design for a new Istanbul market is grounded on two strategies. The first one is extremely practical and related to the conformation of the site, where the Ataturk Boulevard cuts the city, becoming and extremely strong boundary. The Design in that sense provides a bridge over the boulevard and reconnects the two separated neighborhoods. The second strategy it is mainly focus on reinterpreting the traditional qualities of the market, present in relevant examples such as the Grand Bazar: Informality, sensory experience, interaction. Following this inspiration the design reconnects each function to a specific condition. The open air market is loud, informal and chaotic, and it blurs the limits of the building in the city, building an overcharged experience for the visitor. On the contrary the spice market is dark and enclosed, so that the smell becomes the dominant feature of the space. The library is a very bright transparent space, for knowledge and inspiration, located in a volume lifted above the market. Finally on the top of the building a traditional Turkish productive garden is created with modern architectural language. Sight is blocked, as well as noise, so that the experience of the garden becomes a very intimate moment. 26

Pret-a-loger - HOME WITH A SKIN
RETROFITTING 1.4 MILLION HOUSES FOR SOLAR DECATHLON 2014
- Location: The Netherlands - Program: Adaptable skin for post-war row-houses - Year: 2013-2014 - Status: Built - Competition: Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 - Prizes: 1st Communication, 1st Sustainability - Ranking: 3rd in the overall competition - Tutors: Andy van den Dobbelsteen, Hans Wamelink - Role: Design Team - Exhibition project architect - Team: 53 international students - Web: pretaloger.nl
In the Netherlands roughly 1.4 million dwellings are post-war row house typology (SenterNovem,2007b), not to mention many more in the UK and Germany. These dwellings share the same outdated climate and spatial conditions, but at the same time they became homes for many families, acting as a stage for their life to take place. Nowadays the most common solution is to simply demolish these typologies, erasing forever the memories they bring with them. Pret-a-loger provided an alternative: The Skin – an extra layer to put over the house, which improves both the spatial and the climate performance of the existing house, without touching the quality of a home. The Skin was inspired by the food greenhouses, typical of the Netherlands. The prototype was presented by TU Delft at the latest edition of Solar Decathlon Europe winning the 3rd prize over 20 teams from all over the world. As exhibition project architect I personally curated and staged the exhibition in Paris for the jury and the public of Solar Decathlon. 30

Prototype built in Paris: A typical Dutch house has been rebuilt with the Skin, to test performances and spatial qualities in the competition. To better show the condition of the existing house, part of the neighbors house has been “sectioned”. Second hand furniture have been used to furnish the house, to convay the feeling of being in a real family house.

RETROFITTING THE NAI - Structure The original structure has been replaced in order to resist to the heavy load of a new parabolic pergola. The tilted conformation of the columns and the concrete beams allow a considerable improvement of the performance of the structure without a huge increase in the diameter of the columns. A steel structure and prefabricated concrete floors have been used to replace the existing one. The pergola has also been displaced with a new and more resistant one, made by HEM steel beams. The concrete parabolic shells are embedded one into the other.
RETROFITTING THE NAI - South Facade The structure of the facade lays on five IPE HEM 700 beams (one for each floor). The tubular profiles are fixed to the beam by steel profiles and they organize the facade in five different modules 2,25 m wide of PV lamellas. The design facade has been made to ensure very good resistance to the wind.
