Hearth House 747 Arkell Road
An adventure through the landscape; a tiered experienced in which one approaches, navigates, and orients themselves in the romantic built form. This housing project demonstrates a Canadian cottage-like experience as it guides the user through a hierarchy of spaces, each referencing back to the landscape through the senses. Each section of the design engage the user with different aspects of the site; whether it be the separation of public from private or the interaction between build form and natural relationships. The sole of this project is truly about romanticizing natural relationships, focusing on the natural power of the hearth while growing outwards into nature itself.

Public / Private Located on an abandoned farm field, this project builds upon the existing site circulation while maintaining the site’s natural views and characteristics. The project’s entry is set back from the site’s gravel access point - behind the garage - in order to separate the public realm from private views. The street facing elevation is designed to be visually subtle within the landscape, while the rear elevation is designed to be a back drop to the social events taking place.

Home is Where the Hearth is. Located at the focal center of the interior space is the home’s hearth. Designed to be the main backdrop for social gatherings, the hearth features a double sided - multi level - open fireplace. The idea behind this design is to allow for an indoor / outdoor experience surrounding the hearth while housing multiple social program elements and structure for the upper loft. 8 | Portfolio

Village of Yorkville Park The
Centered at the heart of Toronto’s subway system, the Bay Street Station sits beneath this diverse park that was based on the geography of Canada. Lying beneath the Bay Subway Station is Lower Bay, a trial station used briefly before becoming abandoned. The intent of this project was to strategically introduce a community centre beneath the park, without interfering with its prior design. The centre utilizes the space surrounding the existing subway line while taking advantage of the old abandoned space below.

Above Grade: Bodega & Bay Nested above the existing east entrance of the Bay Subway Station, the Bodega & Bay pavilion expands the existing thoroughfare into an above grade market space. The placement of this project carefully sits above the existing building while firmly embedding itself into the rock formation designed from the original park geographical concept. Combining a mixture of open spaces and permanent stalls for vendors along side a open concept kitchen and classroom, this small pavilion aims to provide spaces for learning with local street vendors. 12 | Portfolio

As above, so below. The idea of integrating the community centre within the original site context without disturbing the existing program or aesthetic help is the conceptual success of this design. The project utilizes the lower abandoned subway line as an indoor market while expanding below the park, allowing the sport and recreation centre. Building upwards, the design wraps around the in-use line to create a slender, yet usable space for a library and other market shops. The idea of utilizing existing infrastructure will better the future of our cities.

Sectional Spacial Relationships Solving the long a narrow design issue originates from MVRDV’s design of Markthal in Rotterdam. The idea was to create multiple interlacing spaces that could be viewed or engaged with from another type of program in the centre. The spatial programmatic relationships are key when layering one over

another in a tight but physically pleasing way. Due to the width restrictions of the site, linking program through a section became the only solution to developing proportional spaces that allows for users to engage with the full length of a specific building program, instead of the length of the project itself.

The Freedom of Confinement Located just off the coast of Sicily, the 2018 Young Architects Competition, Art Prison, is based on restoring Castello di Santa Caterina into an artistic retreat. This ninth century fortress acts as the perfect picturesque backdrop to display artwork along side workshops, classrooms, and hotel/ studio spaces. The concept of blurring the lines between freedom and confinement allows for this project to be adaptive within the constraints. It allows for the artistic sense of exploring the freedom within a separation from
civilization. Moreover, a freedom of movement while periodically being restrained within certain moments of the landscape. Overall, this project recognizes that the natural picturesque harnesses the ability to be free while also ironically providing a dramatic location for a place of both seclusion and confinement. Internally to externally, this project uses light, colour, and spacial elements to distinctively determine the boundaries of freedom within an existing space. Understanding project boundaries allows one to push them with creative design elements.

a The idea for this centre was to build off of the existing caretakers house in a way that minimally impacted the occupants view of the landscape. Thus, I developed a custom bi-folding hinge to allow for the Indoor Gallery’s Glazing Joints to become seamless and less visually intrusive. 18 | Portfolio

Located within a suburban backyard, the client for this project wanted a simple yet architecturally pleasing utility shed for tools and machinery. While small in scale, the level of detailing for this project goes above and beyond the level required for a project this size. The goal for this project was to simply practice my graphical and detail skills while simultaneously developing my own personal graphical elements. These graphical elements consist of line weights, scales, dimensions, and other graphic standards in order to keep my drawings organized and harmonious.

Residential
| Reinders + Law Architects Ltd. As southern Ontario continues to diversify, housing developments have taken to new heights, shapes, and styles in order to better our cities. Low income housing is an additional key contributor towards the growth of communities. From stacked townhouses to high rises, developing concepts for a variety of housing types meant understanding numeric breakdowns as part of the design process. This meant determining proper site guidelines while simultaneously developing building program, unit layouts, and parking counts. Ensuring that all building elements work together when moving on to the design development phase.

Rivers of Life
| Reinders + Law Architects Ltd.
Situated on a narrow, gradually sloping site, this Egyptian Fellowship church is designed to follow the narrative of a flowing River. Using geometries, Material, and colour, the user is guided towards the entry and then drawn inward to experience the spiritual enlightenment that the interior provides. The church has been designed in two phases, thus allowing for growth within the church while adhering to budgetary constraints during start up. This meant that the design of phase two had to seamlessly integrate within the flow and program designed in phase one. The result is a beautiful church that allows the people of the Concord community to come together and celebrate the gift of life.

While this project - like any other - is a team success, it highlights the key elements of my architectural design position at Reinders + Law. Starting with the general concept and selling the idea to the client through plans, sections, & renderings. My role was to visually entice the client to become emotionally invested in their project. As one of the firm’s architectural designers, one of my role on this project was to develop the interior finishes board while displaying the final product as a visual walk-through; this can be viewed via the QR code Above.
