new orleans

Various edible schoolyard projects in New Orleans have proven to support education and benefit their neighborhoods in several aspects. These graphics show the vision for the biggest SchoolGarden in Louisiana so far.

The plan on the right shows the school garden, with features, like an outdoor classroom, wetland, greenhouse, high production areas, shade and herb garden. The main schoolyard, assembly and open play space is situated on the lower right.

Below is a before-after collage showcasing how easily a transitional space is translated into a calming shade garden.

The main garden is bordered by a row of pecan trees and fruit bearing trellis structures. Central to the garden is a wetland displaying typical Louisiana natives. An outdoor classroom situated in a fruit orchard enables the school to educate right on the site. landscape design

The main schoolyard features large shaded open spaces, for playing and assemblys. A playmound with a concrete bench forms the center of the play area. At the head of the assembly area a compact structure offers permanent shade and an elevated wood deck as a stage.

new orleans, louisiana united states Currently the Ninth Ward and especially the Holy Cross neighborhood is deprived of public open space, recreational activites and commercial opportunities. Shops, medical services or office spaces are scarce and from an opportunistic void. In order to revitalize the neighborhood and to bolster the local economy a central economical magnet is needed to provide jobs, create retail space and form a meeting point in the neighborhood.

The re-designed main corridor not only presents an axial view to the neighborhood but also forms the new socioeconomical center. Next to the Levee an open space for younger artists is created. Slices of walls create an opportunity for non-conventional arts next to the main corridor and an amphitheater.

The outer walls of the L9 Center are transformed into store fronts and retrofitted for outdoor sitting. In order to create a more attracteve user experience, the levee is planted with flowering meadow plants. This measure not only increases the recreational value of the levee it also decreases maintenance costs.

Laguna del Diablo is a pilot project for the tourism industry of the samana peninsula. The concept is to use natural attractions, connect them to a regional trail network, provide on site lodging and keep the impact of the development low.

A visual impact study as well as economical research resulted in a 20-30% slope as a target terrain.

The idea was to devise a structure that performs well in remote areas while having a low visual impact as well as a low energy consumption. Embedding the building into a slope was the answer to both. The constant temperature of the soil keeps cooling expenses low while a water collecting green roof and the position in the slope blend the building with the environment.

The new building serves as a model for various location. Prefabricated parts make the assembly easy the structure affordable. Two different sizes of lodges and a variety of materials for cladding, porch and roof leave room for customization.

An extensive analysis was ensured that the lagoon itself was preserved as a natural monument and a site for day tourists. A slope analysis and vegetation map showed the best location for the eco-lodge to preserve environment and maximize building performance.

Rainwater use and local food production play a big role in the new concept. All buildings contribute to the site’s water collection, while constructed wetlands filter the water and provide for irrigation and hotel use. Cisterns on the top of the slope feed the store and gravity feed the water to the individual lodges. 25

A new road as well as local and regional trails connect the eco-lodge to the rest of samana. Nature observatories, strategically placed at the boarders of habitats pose an alternative to the activities around the trails and the lagoon.

Every year hundred thousands of people visit the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity. On certain holidays the stream of pilgrims peaks and the local structures cannot cope with the user pressure. Goal was to redesign the arrival area and the paths leading to the site to increase safety and comfort for visitors 27

The new design incorporates rest areas on multiple levels along the path to the sanctuary. The physical separation of the rest areas from the stream of the pilgrims guarantees a better usage and organization of the space.

The goal of the redesign of the church garden in diedenbergen was to transform the garden into a multi-functional plaza with a sequence of structured open spaces. Raised corten steel beds give structure while different paving materials distinguish paths and spaces.

wiesbaden-schierstein The waterfront in schierstein has a tremendous importance for the local citizens. Throughout the summer numerous festivals and celebrations take place. Currently the space is cramped and lacking structure and cohesiveness. Almost no space is left for portable structures required for celebrations. During summer the waterfront is also location of a wine-stand that forms a daily meeting point.

The new design emphasizes the linearity of the rhine river. This is achieved through pavement patterns which at points transform into benches waving out of the ground.

Focus of the new design is versatility. Therefore most of the space is kept open but received a new structure and hierarchy. A cantilevered platform creates additional space next to the water.

This research based construction course lead through the construction of a self cleaning swimming pool accompanied by a shading membrane structure. It was goal to fit the new amenities into the new landscape in an economic and sustainable way.

Villa monrepos is home to the department of landscape architecture at Hochschule Rhein/Main. Goal of this course was to digitally recreate this historic building.

Due to the proximity to the project it was possible to achieve a high precision model supported by on site measurements and observations.
