SITE PLAN

Located in Brunswick, the site for the Outré Gallery stands in a very privileged corner of Sydney Road and Albert Street. Know for the graffitti and hipster culture, the neighborhood easily welcomes this contemporary art gallery. Analyzing the surrounding area we notice old buildings and new, contemporary, ones sitting next to each other, making it an interesting and complex urban palimpsest.

Venturi’s theory is spread all over Brunswick, with its many contradictions. This project embraces that concept poping out on the built surroundings in its aesthetics and function. With such a broad understading of art, the challenge was to tune down the variants and focus on the art itself displayed by the gallery, making a building a blank canvas, while yet not forgeting the building role as a social equipment.

With that in mind, the first step into the project was to make the most use of ground level, placing the coffee shop and the book store in a completely public space, making both private and public take advantage of each other. At the same time the gallery pops out, the neutral colors and strong textures blends it, making room for the retail to draw the attention . All of that to achieve acceptance, usage and to blend in by contrasting with the existing surrounding.
