To me, innovation is the most important part of a design practice, which is only possible through the close collaboration of creative thinkers and makers, producing a crosspollination of ideas and methods. Berlin, Germany
Post-Fab is a proposal for a live-work community, based in Warschauer StraĂ&#x;e, Berlin, sustaining itself by providing a fabrication service to greater Berlin. In addition to acting as a hub for creative activity, Post-Fab introduces the cultural service of preserving historical architectural details of Berlin, cataloged by drones that 3d scan various details throughout the city and stores them in databases that can be accessed and recreated through contemporary fabrication methods. Inhabitants are required to participate in these services and in turn, are allowed to live and produce their own unique spaces within the system of tracks and ramps that integrate circulation and 6-axis robotic arms. This proposal intends to promote the free activity of creative people, in tune with the counterculture that defines contemporary Berlin.

Manifesto for the City of Bagan Emergence, enablement, evolvability and the origin of life:
Bagan, Myanmar
The city as a living organism suggests its nature of selfgeneration through the structure of autocatalytic sets, understanding its decomposition into smaller subsets which are autocatalytic themselves. This is the basis for the origin of life and the emergence of structure, as the proliferation of multiple heterogeneous molecular structures which respond to internal and external stimuli. The product of one reaction may be the catalyst for another reaction; however, they may enable their own catalytic growth independent of an external reaction. Thus it is possible for there to be an effect without needing a cause. This performance and independent behavior may be generalized into a theory of systematic organization in which multiple systems are operating simultaneously, with and without external influence for the potential of evolvability.

Knot House is a proposal for a two-family home on a shared lot, incorporating a formal knotting that allows for a blend of private and public space. The design provides for moments of private detachment in the more intimate programs for each family; however, the public living spaces are designed to open up into each other, blurring the ownership of the communal spaces. This is an intentional design decision in terms of its usage, in which the families may incorporate shared leisure, child rearing, or cooking activities.

This is a proposal for a new crew facility for Columbia University to replace the existing boathouse on the edge of the water in Upper Manhattan along the Spuyten Duyvil Creek. The design consists of an assemblage of parametric vaulted modules which are specifically formed to particular programmatic regions of the plan. These modules vary in materiality corresponding to areas of the scheme that respond to the forthcoming rise of the water level and therefore are intentionally flooded. In this way, this proposal intends to operate with resilience and flexibility, constantly adapting to the programmatic requirements of the building in spite of shifting conditions in the urban and natural environment.

This is a speculative proposal for a new graduate dormitory for Pratt Institute on Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. The facade is inspired by the fluid dynamics of vortex behavior and consists of undulating metal panels that emulate a sense of motion. The program incorporates shared skip-step lounge spaces and balconies that connect otherwise separated living units. These design insertions are aimed at promoting a fluid blend of public and private spaces, intending to promote a more social environment for a demographic that is less likely to interact than undergraduate students.

This project is the result of a digital fabrication elective seminar in which the focus was to develop a parametric masonry unit consisting of unique blocks. Each block is cut from a foam stock utilizing a 6-axis robotic arm equipt with a hotwire cutter, designed to test the kinematic capabilities of this tool through streamlined fabrication workflows.

Landscape Representation

Skaftafell National Park, Iceland
This drawing series explores the relationships between architectural representation and drawing techniques applied to the landscape. The invention of a system of notation as an analytical tool for drawing experimentation pulls information from the aerial photo and extends the understanding of the landscape beyond that which is innately visible. This particular series is sited in Skaftafell National Park in southeast Iceland, juxtaposing collaged perspectival views and interwoven linework, tracking the natural phenomenon of glacial motion.

The Refracted Light Pavillion is a result of a representation seminar that explores the recreation of material phenomena through computational modeling. For this project I mapped the refracted light patterns generated from projecting light onto a surface of rippling water. From the documentation of this process I extracted frames at set intervals and recreated them into a layered lattice structure.

Transfigured is a speculative project that manifests a competing dialogue between computational design and human agency. It is a building as a smart city that grows in layers, adapting and re-organizing according to changing conditions and responding to its programmatic usage. Stemming from research in the anomaly in systems, this project doesn’t intend to provide an answer for navigating computational design and authorship, instead, it exists as a testing ground for speculating conditions of use and living through architectural drawing. Transfigured is a critique, it maintains a playful disposition towards computation, but it also criticizes it by begging the question of whether an algorithm can be subverted. The context of the project is just a standing, it’s examining so many factors that the only way to read it is how it’s used. What we’ve learned is a whole new way to read and reappropriate it.

Gowanus turns its back to its namesake canal. This is evident in both incidental and absolute forms: an examination of street litter and trash can locations reveals the stark lack of public infrastructure and maintenance along the corridor of the canal; a visualization of neighborhood smells illustrates the area’s evolving uses. At the most ingrained level, the canal splits the urban fabric of neighborhood down the center. The street grid is fractured, leaving ten dead ends fronting the canal amidst the four built crossings. These dead ends form a network of un-stewarded spaces along the canal periphery.

Atypical for New York City but fundamentally characteristic of the urban figure of Gowanus, these vacant dead-end territories should be recognized for their potential as an embedded system of unique public spaces. This proposal capitalizes on this inherent local condition to create a network of small urban field stations along the canal.

Creating a network of ‘live ends’ in these otherwise unused spaces will encourage exploration, discovery, and revitalization -- a critical first step in the re-orientation of the neighborhood, as the two cleaved sides slowly turn to address the ‘axis civitas’ of the canal.

As a hallmark of the Japanese Metabolist Movement, the Nagakin Capsule Tower was intended to “denote human society� amd to continually evolve almost organically. In this project, we start with a historic photo of the interior of one apartment - which is notably devoid of people or personal touches - and create a model that reactivates the interior in the photograph by adding layers of human occupation and passing time. The model focuses on the interior of the building rather than on its iconic form. Five apartments are visible through the circular window, which acts as a framic device akin to the viewfinder of a camera. Each one offers a portal into a different past, present, or future version of occupation. Like all buildings, the Nagakin Capsule Tower is a backdrop for people to project their dreams onto - in this case, eras and countries. As a whole, the exhibit explores extended and alterantive futures for the Metabolist Movement.

The tiled form of the wall is inspired by weather patterns. Each folded aluminum tile is folded and rotated to represent a field of vectors driven by currents of flow. Through a user interface integrated into the wall visitors can select various cities based on the lowest, highest, and trending air quality across the globe. The Air Quality Index of various cities is analyzed and used to visualize a global air flow map. This air flow vectors are used to control the back lit LED grid. Each folded panel is back lit by a specific color generated by the average Air Quality Index. Each LED in the grid is covered by a diffuser and a white powder coated aluminum panels that both reflects and catches light. The folding of each panel is designed to give the diffused light a three-dimensional quality as it shields and bounces light off its neighbors. The changing directionality of the panels reveals the back lit LED visualization in different ways depending on where a viewer is standing. This lenticular like effect of the panels creates variable “hotspots” along with the visualization, creating an analog effect that works in tandem with the digital visualization. Through the composite of diffused LEDs and the folded aluminum panels the wall gives light a tactile almost material like quality, meant to go beyond a typical LED grid or screen. By giving the light both material and three-dimensional qualities along with the visualization, the wall appears to almost breath. Similar to the planet, the wall is meant to evoke a system that is less of an object but a dynamic mix of both material in many states that all influence one another.

Using the Weather Channel’s air quality API SOFTlab designed an interactive wall for the lobby of the new IBM Watson headquarters in Atlanta. The interactive wall acts as a physical example of how the partnership between IBM and the Weather Channel can lead to creative innovations in technology in ways we’ve never anticipated before.

Big Wonder

Symphony of the Seas
The “Big Wonder” is an architecturally integrated sculptural canopy located on the Solarium deck of Royal Carribean’s newest flagship cruise liner, the Symphony of the Seas. It spans 2,594 square feet over centrally located bar and pools on the semi-outdoors deck, featuring a programmable LED display that modulates color at nighttime. It is comprised of a formfinding aluminum frame lattice fixed to a steel structure, clad with thousands of dichroic acrylic panels that gradually fan out towards the ends of the appendages of the form with angled fins. During the day it refracts a spectrum of color onto the deck based on viewing angle, bathing the space in a field of fragmented colors.

Guangzhou, China
Gravity Field is a permanent installation in Guangzhou for the Poly Group. The piece is a gravity formed aluminum net hanging three stories in a new shopping center development and clad with a vivid spectrum of translucent kapok flowers, the official flower of Guangzhou. The flowers were developed to be folded three-dimensional objects to populate the lattice of the hanging structure. The flowers form a soft gradient in color as they cascade down the form, overlapping to create intricate blends of color.

Aurora is a hanging installation in the main atrium space of the proposed interior renovation of the library. The installation acts a large floating cloud of color that represents the spectrum and vibrancy of the topics and narratives both created by communities and contained in the library.

Our proposal acts as a cloud of color hanging in the main atrium of the library. The form of the installation is generating using air flow patterns that mimic the eddying of river. The rotation and height of each hanging element is unique but together they create a cohesive atmospheric form. Each of these hanging elements is made of a colored acrylic plane and an aluminum assembly that houses an addressable LED strip and diffuser. The color of each acrylic fin is part of a larger spectrum that gives the overall hanging form a three-dimensional gradient of color

Playing with the ideas of reflection and refraction of light, Mirror Mirror’s interior and exterior are clad with a mirrored surface that reflects the surrounding environment in unexpected ways. Through a panoramic array of mirrors and sound-responsive lights, Mirror Mirror will visually blend the waterfront, the fabric of Old Town, and the activity of pedestrians in the new park.. While the exterior is a monochromatic mirror that reflects the urban environment, the river and visitors themselves, the interior’s mirrored surface is tinted with the full color spectrum, providing another layer of vibrancy and interest. The artwork is also programmed to respond to sound with light, allowing visitors to interact with the artwork and affect its appearance using their voices and bodies. LED fixtures inside each of the artwork’s vertical components are activated by sound and respond by producing light, transforming the front-facing panels from mirrored to transparent, while the interior panels remain mirrored, creating an infinite, colorful reflection and forest of light.
