01 this is my personal STATEMENT “Architecture is not about selling an idea. Architecture is about sincerity. Have fun with it!�, said Ar. Laurent Lim during my first semester's critique session. It was about designing with the purest intention to give a quality and meaningful space to the users while having fun working on it. It was never just about the final product but the process of it which satisfies us, the designers. Critiques! Enjoy the critiques and embrace them from another perspective to improve and innovate. To be honest, architecture was never my first choice. I've never attended any art class, drawn details nor sketched anything related to architecture. But the inspiration from the things we see and experience in the process of learning brought me further into architecture. Visuals, experiences, explorations, experimentations, etc. were used to inspire our work and concepts of our designs which I find very interesting when compared to my previous academic projects where there is only one answer where as architecture is a one to many answer. Apparently, ideas comes from everything we see, touch, feel, hear, and smell. Problems which can be solved in many unimaginable way that one can think of. Most of the time, I derive my ideas from observing the neglected or hidden narrative that are uncommon to many. Things were ignored in time but seeks attention. The little story that wants to be publicized. Architects are like investigators in a crime scene looking for evidence. The process of discovering them and the way it could be narrated can inspire a design in many ways. With that, I believe that the skills obtained from studio projects can be utilized in many other ways depending on our creativity. Creativity is limitless but only limited by how we think.

It was the sea and the splitted rocks by the shore which inspired the design. Praise the land for the beauty and the sea for the compliment.

The site of the project is located in Pulau Besar, Malacca. The Marina Resort which is located by the coast of the island is currently vacant to no owner. However, the abandonment is now bringing life back to the island. This project was to design a Visitor's Interpretive Center where visitors can experience the space related to the site context by the five human senses.

In the past, Brickfields was developed by the last Kapitan Yap Kwan Seng who established a kiln and supplied bricks for constructions. However, after the great fire which engulfed the city of Kuala Lumpur followed by a massive flood destroying most of the wooden structures, the buildings were then built with bricks. Hence Brickfields.

The evolution of topography throughout the century has helped Brickfields to be the center of attraction in Kuala Lumpur.

The road that cuts through the heart of Brickfields and acts as the division between commercial high rise buildings and low rise residential buildings is the Jalan Tun Sambanthan. The site is sustained by its main vessels of transport, Jalan Bangsar and the Federal Highway. Acting as the edge is the Klang River.

"i just bricked my facade with perforation."
Even though bricks were used for most of the buildings after the great fire, they were all hidden behind the plaster and finishes. The idea to rejuvenate the materiality of brick was to rekindle the identity of Brickfields. The use of perforated metal sheets were to give the sense of change and merging of materials in the new Brickfields.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN The library was designed with a linear break in the middle to bring people in from the back alley without negating the existence of it. The break is then celebrated as a plaza for users to experince the interior finishes of the bricks facade as they visit the cafe and the library. FIRST FLOOR PLAN

Being the oldest part of Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown was the heart of which grew around the spot where 87 pioneer chinese miners unloaded their stores and supplies in 1857. From there, the chinese architecture spread and grew into the local dwellings of the people. The main source of water and transport were the Klang river and Gombak river which eventually converged as one.

The culture of Chinatown still exists till this day but many were "hidden" due to the blooming of commercial high rise in the district. However, the emergence of the new culture of murals have been spotted on old and historic buildings around the city which beautifies the remaining heritage of Chinatown.

Open House means that all well-wishers are received and that everyone, regardless of background, is invited to attend. The theme of Rumah Terbuka was meant to invite the public to visit and see the works of our graduate projects and exhibition design.

Since the theme was a Malaysian's Open House, the design of a traditional Rumah Kampung Melayu was in mind. Used timbers and pallets were designed and customized into frames to fit our presentation boards while pipes were designed into table frames and installations. Most of the timber frames were then painted with pastel colors for designated spaces.
