hile a major Summer Festival is now behind us, many of you are surely already curious about what the coming year will bring. With this preview, we would like to offer you an overview of upcoming events, including not only the concerts in the “Cathedral of Sound,” KKL Luzern’s “Salle blanche” so famed for its unique acoustics, but also events that will take place at various other venues and that will appeal to the curious and adventurous. Friends and supporters of LUCERNE FESTIVAL have access to purchase tickets for the summer of 2019 before official sales begin and can place orders already starting now. So it’s worth becoming a member of our Circle of Friends. Our attractive subscriptions can already be booked starting now. You can choose from a variety of themes or opt for a weekend subscription. In this way, you can make sure that you have tickets for the most sought-after concerts early on. So what lies in store? You can look forward to four exquisite performances by the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA under Maestro Riccardo Chailly, who will also be conducting the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY for the first time, featuring music of the 20th century; to the marvelous violinist Leonidas Kavakos as our “artiste étoile”; to the Swiss Thomas Kessler as composer-in-residence; to Igor Levit, who will launch his Beethoven cycle of all 32 piano sonatas; and, of course, to all of the first-rate orchestras and conductors and star virtuosos from around the globe who will perform on the stage of the KKL Luzern day after day. A very special event will be the Mozart-Da Ponte Cycle, which will be conducted by the charismatic Teodor Currentzis. The theme of the Summer Festival will be “Power” – a theme Mozart illuminates in so many ways with his Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte, in the process providing it with the most wonderful music! I hope you enjoy reading this preview – and hope to see you again in Lucerne soon. Yours,
Michael Haefliger Executive and Artistic Director LUCERNE FESTIVAL

LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA S
imply listen to this orchestra and the unique sound it produces, and it becomes clear that you’re experiencing something different from all the rest. Each summer, some 100 or so internationally renowned musicians gather in Lucerne to form a top-class ensemble de luxe. In “normal” life, these are sought-after soloists and chamber musicians, music professors, or members of other famous orchestras. But over the summer, during their holiday, they dedicate themselves collectively to the great orchestral repertoire, which they study to perfection and work through from scratch, inspired by the pure joy of making music together. Claudio Abbado and Michael Haefliger founded the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA in 2003, taking up an idea that the legendary Arturo Toscanini had implemented at a “Concert de Gala” in 1938 during the Festival’s founding. In 2019, the Italian maestro Riccardo Chailly, who has helmed the orchestra for three seasons, will devote himself to Russian symphonic music, with works by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky. Also on the agenda is Gustav Mahler’s shattering Sixth Symphony. A work known as the Tragic that depicts the power of fate with spectacular hammer blows, it is close to the heart of Chailly, an avowed Mahlerian.

LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY
W
hat concentrated expertise in contemporary music! Every summer, about 100 young, talented musicians travel to Lucerne to devote themselves exclusively to works of the 20th and 21st centuries: music about which they are passionate and to which they are entirely dedicated. The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is a master school at the highest level, a place for creative exchange, a musical think tank. Nowhere else is there anything comparable. Under the guidance of renowned new music specialists, the participants rehearse orchestral, ensemble, and chamber concerts. The program also offers a master class in conducting and the Composer Seminar with Wolfgang Rihm, the Academy’s Artistic Director. In the summer of 2019, the Academy students will encounter composer-in-residence Thomas Kessler; work with composer and conductor Sir George Benjamin, and, for the first time, with Riccardo Chailly; and unveil two brand-new orchestral pieces by Marianna Liik and Josep Planells Schiaffino. They will also look back to the beginnings of the avant-garde with music by Schoenberg and Mosolov, and they will focus as well on works by Rihm, Benjamin, and Dieter Ammann.

Leonidas Kavakos “Artiste étoile”
T
he purpose of art is not “relaxation or entertainment.” It should “form the soul.” Such an artistic credo reveals a tremendous aspiration, which makes it a typical Kavakos dictum. Leonidas Kavakos, Greece’s most important classical music export since Maria Callas, may well be a violinist of unlimited possibilities who commands technique, temperament, and a versatile sound. And yet his immense virtuosity is never in itself a goal but is always at the service of the musical message. “In Greek there is a wonderful word for performance: ‘ermenia,’” says Kavakos. “Hermes, the messenger of the gods, is contained therein. For the essential thing is not the performer but the message of the composer.” Born in 1967, Kavakos caused a sensation early on by winning the Sibelius and Paganini Competitions. But he wasn’t looking for rapid success because – in his view – an artist needs time and should acquire experience. So it’s hardly surprising that Kavakos will not just show off his skills with the usual war horses of the violin repertoire in Lucerne but has selected works by Chausson, Ravel, Sibelius, Stravinsky, and Korngold that are particularly close to his heart, as well as chamber music that he will perform with his long-standing duo partner Yuja Wang.

homas Kessler, who was born in Zurich in 1937 and was awarded the Swiss Music Prize this autumn, is an extraordinarily original and boundlessly curious composer. A pioneer of electronic music, he headed the Electronic Beat Studio in Berlin and later established the Basel Studio for Electronic Music. He taught for many years at the Basel Music Academy and founded such initiatives as the Tage für Neue Musik in Zurich. In addition to his groundbreaking Control Cycle, the retrospective in Lucerne will especially focus on more recent works. In his large orchestral piece Utopia III, for example, Kessler equips all of the musicians with iPods, microphones, and loudspeakers. This frees them from being dependent on a sound designer; instead, they can control the live electronic modulation of their playing themselves – a fascinating spatial music and at the same time a reflection on musical power relations. In said the shotgun to the head and NGH WHT, Kessler fuses rap and contemporary music not by conventionally “setting to music” the poems of the slam poet Saul Williams but by deriving musical events from the speech melody and the breathless rhythm of Williams’s powerfully eloquent delivery.

Mozart’s Da Ponte Operas with Teodor Currentzis
I
t is an existential human topic that shapes everyday life around the globe: “Power” is the theme of Lucerne’s Summer Festival in 2019. That power must be exercised is simply a necessity, but it rarely seems to be fair – all too often, the law of might makes right holds sway, leading to hierarchies and subjection. In his famous operas to librettos by Lorenzo Da Ponte, Wolfgang Amadé Mozart has illuminated three varieties of power. Le nozze di Figaro depicts the servant rising up against his master, the Count. Don Giovanni shows the power of Eros as pursued by the title hero, who all the same goes to hell because he does not recognize the greater power of the divine order. In Così fan tutte, the philosopher Don Alfonso conducts an insidious psychological experiment, turning two young couples into the playthings of his test design. But all three operas emphasize the matchless power of music, which can bring us euphoric pleasure, making us laugh and cry. Teodor Currentzis, a conductor who avidly searches for meaning, will perform these master pieces with his ensemble musicAeterna and prominent soloists. Among them is Cecilia Bartoli, with whom he will be collaborating for the first time, as Despina and in another all-Mozart program.

The Partners of LUCERNE FESTIVAL Main Sponsors Developing content-rich projects in collaboration with leading partners from the business world is a special goal of LUCERNE FESTIVAL. As Main Sponsors, these companies enter into a long-term partnership with the Festival in order to promote the development and implementation of individual artistic concepts. Credit Suisse makes the annual orchestral residency of the Vienna Philharmonic possible. In addition, the Credit Suisse Foundation is dedicated to supporting emerging artists through two awards devoted to the next generation. These are granted annually on an al20 LUCERNE FESTIVAL | PREVIEW & SUBSCRIPTION SERIES: SUMMER 2019
ternating basis: the “Prix Credit Suisse Jeunes Solistes” and the “Credit Suisse Young Artist Award.” Nestlé S.A. is committed to the ambitious idea of a unique Festival orchestra and makes the annual residency of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA possible through its contributions. Roche is a committed partner of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY and grants composition commissions in alternating years as part of the “Roche Commissions” and the “Roche Young Commissions.” The resulting new works are given their premieres as part of the Summer Festival.
LUCERNE FESTIVAL thanks its Partners for their valued commitment to the 2019 Summer Festival. Main Sponsors
The Adecco Group supports the increase in the Festival’s international presence, especially the activities of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA in Asia, thus enhancing the worldwide reputation of the Festival. Zurich Insurance Company Ltd (Zurich) has made it a primary goal to enable access to classical music for a broad public. The free “40min” concert series underscores this commitment with numerous events in Lucerne Hall. Theme Sponsor Every summer, LUCERNE FESTIVAL is traditionally organized around a general theme that serves as a leitmotif for the concert programming. “Power” is the theme of the 2019 Summer Festival – which may well be the most controversial theme for humanity in general. On the one hand, the programming will include works that explore the phenomenon of power in terms of their content; on the other, we will investigate music’s own power to have an impact. And of course we will also draw attention to power structures as these have shaped and continue to shape the world of music. Clariant supports LUCERNE FESTIVAL in these endeavors as Theme Sponsor.

Musical experiences that linger on long afterward: Riccardo Chailly and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA inspire with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand
Foundation Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL Since its founding in 1966, the Foundation Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL has made supporting the work of one of the world’s most renowned classical music festivals its goal.
The moral and financial support that is obtained through this non-profit organization is invaluable for LUCERNE FESTIVAL. The Friends’ contributions, about eight percent of the total budget, are a significant contribution to the Festival’s financial security and sustainability. Aside from this funding source, LUCERNE FESTIVAL is mainly supported by private and corporate sponsors and receives only a small contribution in the form of subsidy from the public sector. The Friends have thus become an indispensable partner of the Festival. But not only is supporting the Festival of today a matter of central concern: they also hope to create a sustainable basis for the artistic activity of tomorrow by fostering such important projects as the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY and LUCERNE FESTIVAL YOUNG. The circle of the Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL offers an opportunity to share in the experience of the Festival in all its variety and to deepen your musical experience through such exclusive events as artist meetand-greets and visits to rehearsals; through the Friends you can moreover make contact with an interesting and international group of like-minded peers. LUCERNE FESTIVAL is grateful to all of its Friends for their long-standing and loyal support. 24 LUCERNE FESTIVAL | PREVIEW & SUBSCRIPTION SERIES: SUMMER 2019

What connects us with musicians, is our passion for THE PERFECT COMPOSITION.
THIS IS CLARIANT: PASSIONATE SUPPORTER OF THE ARTS
The perfect combination of harmony, tempo and rhythm creates music that moves us all. Almost like us: because if we want to get something moving, we combine commitment, know-how and research to create innovative solutions for specialty chemicals that reduce emissions, conserve resources—and create sustainable value. That is precious to us.
