Dear Music Lovers,
W
hat crazy times we are living in right now! Just a year ago, could you have imagined that our social life would nearly come to a standstill, as it did this spring following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic? That so many things we had taken for granted would suddenly become impossible and that only by taking careful precautions would we gradually be able to do them again? And yet this crisis also entails some opportunities. When we were able to present a small festival during the summer, which we called “Life Is Live,” and to celebrate live music together again, think of how happy that made us! The corona lockdown has taught us to appreciate such values as community, solidarity, and culture in a new way. Our normal expectations have been upended and gone haywire: in short, the world around us has gone crazy. We’ve taken these experiences as an opportunity to make this sense of being “crazy” our theme for the 2021 Summer Festival. The German word (“ver-rückt”) has a double meaning. First, our theme involves music that goes beyond what is “normal,” such as Anton Bruckner’s symphonies, which repeat certain rhythms and patterns almost maniacally, as well as works by Schubert, Liszt, Mahler, Strauss, and Stravinsky that contemporaries considered self-indulgent simply because of their “heavenly length” or extravagant instrumentation. We will present three operas involving “crazy” plots and heroes. A separate cycle will be devoted to Robert Schumann, who was declared insane and died in a mental hospital. Second, we will focus on composers from Bach to Boulez who, through new aesthetic premises and musical paradigms, upended (another sense of “ver-rückt”) our sense of what music can do. Full details about what we have planned may be found on the following pages. We’d like to whet your appetite to attend live concerts in the first year “after” with this preliminary preview. Starting now, you can order subscriptions and make sure you have tickets for the craziest performances. Yours,
Michael Haefliger Executive and Artistic Director Lucerne Festival

n 2003, the legendary Italian conductor Claudio Abbado and the Festival’s Executive and Artistic Director Michael Haefliger turned a crazy idea into reality by founding an orchestra that comprises the finest in the profession to perform for just one or two weeks a year. It marked the birth of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, which has since become the hallmark of every Lucerne Summer Festival. This de luxe ensemble, which has been led by Maestro Riccardo Chailly since 2016, consists of some 100 members. In their “normal,” everyday musical life, these musicians keep busy playing as soloists and in chamber ensembles, take principal positions in other top orchestras, or teach at renowned universities. For the annual concerts by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, they are happy to forego their summer vacations and play for the sheer pleasure of it, free from the pressures of their normal jobs yet as intensely as if their lives were at stake. No challenge is too big for them to surmount – not even in 2021, when they and Chailly will present works by Mahler, Berg, and Rachmaninoff. And with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium, they will ascend the highest peak of all Bruckner symphonies: the magical and mystical Eighth.
Soloists from the Lucerne Festival Orchestra Program details will be announced at a later date.

W
hat does it really mean to be “new”? The Lucerne Festival Academy, our unique master school for music of the 20th and 21st centuries, will pose this question in the summer of 2021. There will be many world premieres, including of the Piano Concerto to an utterance by composer-in-residence Rebecca Saunders. But even works by such composers as Edgard Varèse, Anton Webern, and Igor Stravinsky that have long been considered “modern classics” still seem so new and unfamiliar to many listeners that they are rarely encountered in concert life even today. The Cosmos Boulez series will similarly foster new discoveries. This series is devoted to significant works by Pierre Boulez, the Academy’s founder, which were withdrawn during his lifetime and thus have not been heard for decades. Heinz Holliger presents a unique perspective on the Festival’s theme with his Gesänge der Frühe, a work that links the destinies of two “crazy” artists, Robert Schumann and Friedrich Hölderlin. A Composer Seminar with Wolfgang Rihm, the Academy’s Artistic Director, is also among the offerings. The projects to be undertaken by the Lucerne Festival Alumni, the network of former Academy students, will be announced at a later time.

hen virtuosos like Niccolò Paganini, Franz Liszt, or Sergei Rachmaninoff used to dazzle audiences with their diabolical artistry, their awe-struck listeners imagined a pact with the devil had to be involved. We still encounter legendary musicians who display a virtuosity that seems wizard-like even nowadays – and they are by no means limited to male performers. The Chinese pianist Yuja Wang, who was born in 1987, represents the level of keyboard magic where there seem to be no technical limits. Far more than her extravagant outfits, it is her hyper-virtuosity that casts a spell on piano lovers. “The music comes first,” she asserts, “and not the physical pleasure of being able to play fast.” As “artiste étoile” of the crazy 2021 Summer Festival, she will therefore perform not only such notoriously challenging works as Liszt’s First Piano Concerto and Rachmaninoff’s Fourth but also Mozart’s deeply probing D minor Concerto, K. 466; Bach’s F minor Concerto, with its blissful Largo; and Shostakovich’s cheerfully humorous Second Piano Concerto. Such variety shows how the true master commands all facets of the art of piano playing, immersing herself deeply in the work at hand and exploring the very soul of the music.

Rebecca Saunders Composer-in-Residence
R
ebecca Saunders’s music teaches you about perception itself. She elicits sounds from silence, listens to them intensely, observes them from different angles, like a sculptor, constantly deriving new colors and nuances of expression – and also guiding them to extremes of emotion and violent eruptions. For Saunders’s music wants to get under your skin. The Berlin-based British artist prefers to focus on individual instruments and to collaborate intensively with her performers in order to experiment with unusual playing techniques. Her new piano concerto to an utterance was written for the pianist Nicolas Hodges and is now receiving its world premiere as part of the Roche Commissions series. For the soprano Juliet Fraser, Saunders has chosen the famous final monologue by Molly Bloom from James Joyce’s great novel of the 20th century, Ulysses: in Nether, she translates the text’s wildly whirling flashes of inspiration, memory fragments, and sensory impressions into a highly emotional vocal performance. Saunders was to have been introduced as “composer-in-residence” to Festival audiences last summer with new and very recent works. The coronavirus pandemic forced us to postpone the invitation for a year.

Music for Future:
Music for Future
The Generation of Tomorrow
T
hrough the “Music for Future” program, Lucerne Festival is setting the course for what is to come. This heading refers to all of our activities that either serve to promote young talent or that are aimed at young audiences. And we are expanding our commitment to the next generation even further. That’s why, going forward, every Summer Festival will begin with performances by international youth orchestras. In 2021, for example, two Swiss ensembles will encounter an African brass formation and the Russian National Youth Orchestra. Through their eager dedication, about 400 young musicians between the ages of 12 and 22 will show that classical music is hardly a thing of the past but remains fresh and alive. Top-class young professionals will be introduced in our debut concerts; some of them will also subsequently perform in schools. Through the Prix Credit Suisse Jeunes Solistes, Credit Suisse Young Artist Award, and Fritz Gerber Award, we confer top-class prizes on young artists. And naturally we continue to present the popular family and children’s concerts, which offer a playful approach to music. Best of all: tickets for the “Music for Future” projects are carefully kept at a reasonable price, and some of them are even free.

Our Partners and Supporters Main Sponsors Developing associated, content-rich projects in collaboration with leading partners from the business world is a key goal for us. As Main Sponsors, these companies enter into a long-term partnership with the Festival in order to support the development and implementation of individual artistic concepts. Credit Suisse makes the annual orchestral residency of the Vienna Philharmonic possible. In addition, the Credit Suisse Foundation is dedicated to supporting emerging artists through two awards devoted to the next generation. These are granted annually on an alternating basis: the “Prix Credit Suisse Jeunes Solistes” and the “Credit Suisse Young Artist Award.” 26 LUCERNE FESTIVAL | PREVIEW & SUBSCRIPTION SERIES: SUMMER 2021
The focus of the cooperation with the Kühne Foundation is on supporting the internationally recognized Lucerne Festival Orchestra and other selected projects. Roche is a committed partner of the Lucerne Festival Academy and grants composition commissions in alternating years as part of the Roche Commissions and the Roche Young Commissions. The resulting new works are given their premieres during the Summer Festival. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, both of these Roche Commissions series are taking place simultaneously in 2021. workshops to further their professional career paths – as part of the Career Sessions program, which will take place in part digitally and in part on location in Lucerne. Zurich Insurance Company Ltd (Zurich) has made it a primary goal to create a better future and, together with LUCERNE FESTIVAL, to make classical music accessible to a broader audience. The free “40min” concert series underscores this commitment with numerous events in Lucerne Hall. Theme Sponsor During the summer, our Festival traditionally follows a basic guiding theme. The 2021 Summer Festival will focus on the theme “crazy,” the German word for which has a double sense (“ver-rückt,” underscored by the hyphen): on one level, it marks something out as going beyond what is regarded as normal, whether that involves crazy characters, delusion, or eccentricity. But it also refers here to composers, works, and performers or to aesthetic processes and historical events that have upended paradigms, broken rules, and opened up new possibilities. The Clariant Foundation supports Lucerne Festival as its Theme Sponsor.

Their continuous and generous support has made the Friends an indispensable partner of Lucerne Festival. The Friends also provide a sustainable basis for the artistic work of tomorrow and therefore support such important projects as the Lucerne Festival Academy. The circle of Friends of Lucerne Festival offers the opportunity to deepen the concert experience through discussions with artists and visits to rehearsals, which allows members to become part of an international network of music enthusiasts. The Young Friends of Lucerne Festival has been established especially for young adults to organize shared concert visits at reduced rates and to offer a varied supporting program.
