An explanation of unconventional notations: Precise fingering is given for much of the piece (T = Bb trigger, 0 = no valves). When this is the case, do not "correct" the tuning of any notes with the hand - the desired effect is that of a natural horn in just intonation. e 7th and 11th partials have been notated as quartertones (though other partials are "out of tune" to a lesser degree). To clarify, all notes always sound a perfect 5th lower than written, regardless of fingering. Stopped and half-stopped notes do not adhere to any given fingerings, as the use of the hand would render any attempt at just intonation obsolete. Diamond noteheads are to be played half-valved. HV indicates a halfvalve trill. Square fermatas are approximately 10 seconds long. Ordinary fermatas are up to the performer's discretion. On page 4 vowel sounds are given above some notes ("talking horn"). Make the vowel sound with the tongue while playing to alter the timbre of the note. It may be necessary to sing in unison with the horn while making these vowel sounds in order to vary the timbre more noticeably. A line between two vowels indicates a gradual change.
Duration: 9'00" approx.
I had wanted to more fully explore the possibilities of the horn since I began using the faux-natural horn in my Electric Guitar Concerto in early 2017, so when Andrew asked me to write a solo piece for a contemporary music performance I was incredibly excited. By this point I must have spent hours looking at an extensive fingering chart, trying to figure out just how this instrument works and how to use it to its fullest. Because the horn is capable of so much, I decided to introduce each attribute individually over the course of the piece. To begin with only a single pitch is used, inflected first by dynamic, then rhythm and articulation, then microtonal adjustments. Only a er all these have been established are other pitches introduced. Pedal tones and "talking horn" are also utilized, until the piece finally returns to the opening note, having taken on a new meaning.
