I S S A _Biennale Architettura 2023

“Architecture is the very mirror of life” Pei says. “You only have to cast your eyes on buildings to feel the presence of the past, the spirit of a place; they are a reflection on society.”

I S S A is a void that encourages the user to be lost in the now. It is a connection between the self and the moment. An aura of mystery translated into matter, defined by a timeline of materials from the ground rising up, representing the past and the present. The space provokes an emotional reaction; a sensitive awareness for the user to reconnect with their existence and roots.

At 3DM Architecture, we were honored to have presented our art installation, ISSA (Now), at the esteemed Venice Biennale. Our installation aimed to confront the contemporary architectural crisis in Malta and address the absence of a distinct architectural identity. By utilizing local Maltese materials like weathered stone blocks, gravel, and carved stone, we invited viewers to reflect and contemplate.

Our objective was to reconnect with Malta's roots, preserve our cultural heritage, and inspire a new architectural identity that harmonized tradition and innovation. By participating in the Biennale, we believed it was imperative to shed light on the lack of identity in Maltese architecture on a global platform. Together, we aimed to shape a future where contemporary structures reflected the richness of Maltese heritage for generations to come.
