A Saint Patrick’s Experience By Lucía Ugalde Barrantes

Diego was a 15 year old boy who was in ninth grade. He was a very good person and an outstanding student. He had excellent grades in all the subjects. One day, his parents told Diego that since he had such good grades, they were going to visit his aunt on his next vacations.

She lived in Chicago, so Diego was excited because he was going to visit another country. Diego was so happy that he started packing even when there were still a couple of months before his vacations.

Days and weeks passed, and suddenly it was time to go. It was March the 17th, and Diego and his family were ready to go to the United States. The flight was really tiring, but Diego was excited to get to their destination.

When they got to the airport, Diego’s aunt was already there waiting for them. On their way to his aunt’s house, Diego noticed two things. First, there were a lot of people on the streets, and everybody seemed as if they were having so much fun. Second, all of them were wearing green! Every single person, from babies to adults, were wearing something green.

“What is going on?” Diego asked surprised. “Oh! It’s a parade” answered his aunt. “We are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day today.” Diego was a bit lost “Who is St. Patrick?” He wondered. “He was a missionary from Ireland; and this day is specially celebrated by IrishAmerican people,” said his aunt.

Diego kept staring at the window of his car. He could see all kind of crazy things. The people on the celebration were eating green food and drinking green beverages. Even the river was green! It was amazing, Diego decided. He loved parades; and he liked this one even more because green was, after all, his favorite color.

He had lots of fun that day. And he thought that even if he could not be there to celebrate every year, St. Patrick’s Day had become one of his favorite celebrations.
