First Sight by Scott Lerman
Harold “Doc” Edgerton’s developed strobe and other innovative technologies to stop motion—from the splash of a drop of milk to the blast of an atomic bomb. His breakthroughs enabled photographers to capture the unimaginably brief, giving viewers “first sight” of extraordinary moments. I hope to rekindle that sense of surprise and disbelief. To use technology to create images that have never been seen. First Sight avoids the expected vocabulary of highspeed water drop photography. The images are devoid of any familiar clues of origin, leaving you entirely on your own to interpret what you view. Scale, material, and time frame are not obvious. What you see is a blend of reality and your imagination.
First Sight
Your mind’s eye will interpret and categorize the images based on a lifetime of experience with known forms—a human figure or face, an animal, molten glass or rock, or perhaps a Brancusi sculpture.
By Scott Lerman
The photographs are raw, spontaneous, and unaltered. I make no attempt to introduce false color or symmetry. My goal is to capture, not tame, the wild flow and forces at work. What I do control is the size, frequency, pacing, and travel of the water drops. Final framing and the knife’sedge of focus are painstakingly set over time, as images emerge in brief flashes. Finally, the bright moment of capture (at about 1/20,000th of a second) is shifted to reveal different aspects of ascent and decay. Each image is viewed after the fact. The forces at work are adjusted and repeated thousands of times over. First Sight is a highly curated view of unseen moments of brief wonder.

Scott Lerman uses scientific or technology-intense imaging methods to create fine art photographs. Whether it is the remapping of three-dimensional landscapes into two-dimensional images or capturing events that last only milliseconds, Lerman strives to reveal the strange and provocative beauty that is hidden all around us. His photographs have been exhibited by The Center for Fine Art Photography, CO; PhotoPlace Gallery, VT; Griffin Museum of Photography, MA; Kadoya Gallery, MO; Photo Independent, CA; The Big Picture, CO; and Duncan Miller Gallery’s Your Daily Photograph.
