Snow and Steam in Austria and Bohemia

Tuesday 14th February to Tuesday 21st February 2023

Discover the rich culture and wonderful landscapes of Austria and the Czech Republic on this wonderful winter holiday packed with unique steam attractions. • Travel steam-hauled on a private charter train on the rarely visited Steyrtalbahn in Upper Austria, as well as the famous

Gmünd narrow gauge network to Litschau, using original motive power from the Austro-Hungarian era and featuring numerous run-pasts for filmers • Be among the first to travel steam-hauled on the re-opened Mariazellerbahn branch line to Bischofstetten on a private charter with the original 0-8+4 articulated locomotive Mh 6. • Travel on private charter trains and comfortable OBB service trains on scenic railway routes ‘off the beaten path’ through the serene Austrian hinterland, to enchanting locations such as the Kamp Valley and the towns of Horn and Zwettl • Enjoy steam in the Czech Republic on the south branch of the impressive JHMD narrow gauge network from Jindrichuv

Hradec to Nova Bystrice with the mighty Polish-built tender locomotive Px48 1916 • Based in the magnificent Austrian capital city of Vienna and the charming countryside town of Gmünd on the Czech border, you’ll enjoy quality hotels and traditional Austrian hospitality

Tuesday 14th February Arrive to Vienna You arrive in Austria’s capital around mid-day, following a morning flight from London. After a direct transfer from the airport you check into your centrally located hotel, where you’ll be based for the next three nights. You can spend the rest of the day exploring iconic Vienna at your leisure, using the complimentary public transport rover ticket supplied, valid for the duration of your stay in the city. A welcome dinner is served at nearby restaurant. (D)

Wednesday 15th February Vienna at leisure and steam at Strasshof with 17c372 After breakfast you’ll still have the morning to further explore Vienna and all of its wonderful sights, including the dense tram network and busy main line railway stations. Then you rejoin the group in the early afternoon for a trip to the famed Strasshof railway museum and steamshed, located just north of the city. The site hosts one of the largest collections of preserved and operational steam locomotives in Central Europe and has many iconic tank and tender locomotives dating from the AustroHungarian era. Indeed, the archaic 4-4-0 tender locomotive 17c372 dating from 1891 will be in steam and provide cab-ride opportunities up and down the expansive, mile-long museum yard. Naturally, attractive filming options will also be staged. After a good outing, you return to Vienna by late afternoon, with the evening still free to spend at leisure. (B) Thursday 16th February Steam at the Steyrtalbahn This morning you’ll travel by ÖBB service train to the historic city of Steyr. There you board a private charter train to travel the full length of the preserved narrow gauge Steyrtalbahn from Steyr Lokalbahnhof to Grünburg. Along the pretty route, the early 20th century tank engine hauling your “little train” consisting of classic green coaches will pause numerous times for photos at the prettiest locations. After travelling for 17 km, the train reverses at the terminus Grünburg and returns by steam to Steyr. You then enjoy lunch at a typical Austrian restaurant in Steyr’s picturesque Medieval town centre. In the late afternoon you return to Vienna by ÖBB service train. (B L)
