The Great Yarmouth Flyer

Saturday 24th June 2023

The Great Yarmouth Flyer provides a rare opportunity to travel behind Flying Scotsman along its former LNER route out of King’s Cross, on it’s Centennial Year, with the added attraction of extensive travel through the rural landscapes of the Fens and Norfolk to our seaside destination of Great Yarmouth. There will be high demand for this trip so early booking is advisable.

Leaving London King’s Cross in the morning, we head northwards through the north London suburbs before branching off the East Coast main line at Alexandra Palace and take the Great Northern route via Hertford North, where we pause to pick up passengers. We then continue to our final pick up point at Stevenage before continuing via Royston to Cambridge. Heading northwards through Cambridgeshire, the Fens start to appear as we reach Ely, with its architecturally famous cathedral dominating the otherwise flat landscape. More Fenland scenery is traversed as we head eastwards along the former Great Eastern lines through Thetford and Wymondham, passing great tracts of agricultural lands, crossing many waterway drains and sighting windmills frequently as we head for Norwich. At Norwich, our train will reverse and be diesel hauled to Great Yarmouth via the Broadlands line through Brundall and Acle.

At Great Yarmouth, there will be time to visit this popular east coast seaside resort which has much to offer visitors. Apart from an extensive promenade, there is the pier to visit, along with all the attractions of a busy seaside town. During our stay in Great Yarmouth, Flying Scotsman will be serviced and prepared for the return run back to London King’s Cross. Our return from Great Yarmouth will see Flying Scotsman hauling our train as we head for Norwich. We will avoid Norwich terminus station by taking the Wensun curve before continuing via Ely, Cambridge and our earlier pick up stations back to London King’s Cross, thereby ending a varied and leisurely trip across country to Norfolk.
