The World


the Goal

These cards list the abilities of the characters in the game.


Game Components 1 Game Board

34 of Sets of Map Titles A set of hexagon title represents the terrain of this world. Players draw a set of the map title to discover the world. After they drew, place the map title on the Game board.

1 Order board

Place Character’s Name Tags on this board, then that presents players order in the round.

The game board represents a world of Blackhearts. The board is divided into several hexagon spaces. These spaces determine how the ship can move about the board.

8 Character Cards

These cards list the abilities of the characters in the game.

99 Treasure coins

These are the Treasure coins that in the Treause Chest. Also these coins count as points at the end of the game. Players can cash it by Treasure Cards.

1 Treasure chest This is the Treasure Chest that players are looking for. Thay have to bring it back to the town.


8 Character’s name tags 12 Monster cards These cards list the abilities of the characters in the game.

These cards list the abilities of the characters in the game.

This is the main ship that contain all the characters in the game.

These Rowboat are the craft that players can build in the game.

These four dice are used for determining results from battle.

Setup

• At the beginning of the game, every player takes 3 treasure coins. • One player puts all the name tags into the black bag and shack it. • Another player draws a name card to define the characters’ order. The first name tag he/she draws, place on the No.1 on Order board and so on.

Who plays first • First draw #(Cards number - Players number) random cards from the Character Deck and set them face down in the center of the table without looking at them. Those cards will not be used this round. Facedown cards for 4-8 players Number of players

• The player who was Captain now takes the Character Deck(the oldest person takes this action at the beginning of the game), looks at the cards, and secretly chooses a character from here. He then passes the remaining character cards to the player on his left, who also secretly chooses a card and passes the remaining cards to the left, etc. This continues until each player has chosen one card from the Character Deck. When last player has chosen, pick up the facedown cards and choose one card. After the last player has chosen, the single remaining unchosen card is placed face down on the table. • Once all players have chosen a character card, players reveal the character card base on the Order board’s order.


Characters Each character in the game is represented by a Character card. The card shows a potrait of the character and lists his or her abilities. Every character has a unique special ability. You may (it is not mandatory to use the special power) use your character’s power once at any point during your turn.

•Captain:

• Captain can duplicate other character’s ability in his turn.

5 people in the game. No.1, Cook(Lucien). No.2, Sailor(Peter). No.3, First mate(Yue). No.4, Doctor(Frank). No.5, Captain(Dilara). After Peter’s turn, Yue decides to use Captain’s ability. She duplicates Doctor’s ability. Now she can heal herself or any other players.

Each character’s power is summarized on its card, and detailed below:

•First Mate:


Ability:

• First Mate can switch two character’s order.

Example:

5 people in the game. No.1, Cook(Lucien). No.2, Sailor(Peter). No.3, First mate(Yue). No.4, Doctor(Frank). No.5, Captain(Dilara). After Peter’s turn, Yue decides to use First mate’s ability. She switches Doctor and Navigator. It means after Yue’s turn, Frank loses his turn and Lucien obtains another turn.

•Navigator:

• The new map card must be placed with at least one edge adjacent and abutting one previously placed tile. The new map card may not simply be placed corner to corner with the previous map card. • The new map card must be placed so that both ocean and land segments on the new map card continue to ocean and land segment on all butting map cards. • In the rare circumstance where a drawn map card has no legal placement (and all players agree), the player put the map card back to the stacks and draws another tile to place.

Example 1:

John chose Navigator in this round, then he draw a set of map title from the bag.

He unfolds the map title and places on the Game Board.

Ability:

• Only Navigator can draw a set of map title. • Navigator can move any one set of map on the side-board.

Drawing map title and Placing Phase:

Navigator must draw a set of map card from map card stacks. He unfolds the set of the map, then shows it to other players(so they can advise him on the "best" placement of the tile), and places it on the table, using the following rules:

• Only Sailor can move the ship. Each time Sailor move 3 space on the

• Only Marine can battle with monsters. • If Marine win the battle, then take 1 treasure coin from every player; if Marine lose the battle, then monster make damage(s) to the ship.


Example 1:

Peter takes Exploration action, so he draws a card and the card is Moster card which is Kaiju. Orange has Marine in hand, even he is the next person of Peter, Orange shows his Marine and immediately takes the battle . Orange rolls a 2D6 to see the result and it is 7. He defeats Kailua, then he receives 1 treasure coin from everyone. After the battle, Peter keeps doing his other action.

•Doctor:

Ability:

• Only Doctor can heal the character or heal himself. • Once Doctor heals the player, Doctor take one treasure coin from that player.

Example 2:

Ted takes Exploration action, so he draws a card and the card is Monster card which is Ocean Dragon. Jerry was the previous person of Ted and he has Marine. Now Jerry takes the battle and rolls a 2D6. The result is 6, so they lose the battle. Ocean Dragon takes 2 damages to the ship. Later, the game back to Ted’s turn and continues his other action.

Example:

Ted takes Exploration action, so he draws a card and the card is Monster card which is Ocean Dragon. Jerry was the previous person of Ted and he has Marine. Now Jerry takes the battle and rolls a 2D6. The result is 6, so they lose the battle. Ocean Dragon takes 2 damages to the ship. Later, the game back to Ted’s turn and continues his other action.


•Mechanist:

• Only Mechanist can fix the ship. • Mechanist can build a craft, if player has craft card(Rowboat card) in hand.

Rowboat Moving Phase:

Only the player who build the rowboat can move it. Each time the Rowboat move one space on the map.

Example:

Antonio takes Exploration action then he draws a card which is the First part of components of a raw boat(Craft components card). He already has the second part in hand. If he is Mechanist in this turn or picks Mechanist later, then he is able to build a row boat.

•During the turn, Cook can poison one Character; the player cannot do any action in this turn. •Cook is able to poison more then one player that depends on the numbers of the poison card that player has in hand.

Example:

6 people in the game. No.1, Cook(Lucien). No.2, Sailor(Peter). No.3, First mate(Yue). No.4, Doctor(Frank). No.5, Captain(Dilara). No.6 Navigator(Regis). Lucien uses two Poison cards to poison Peter and Frank. During Yue’s turn, She switches Cook and Doctor. Now, Lucien can poison people again, but Frank and Peter can not be target. In addition the poison effects Frank’s next turn.


Player’s Action

Blackhearts is played over a series of rounds. Each player takes one action during his/her turn. The first player takes the first turn during the round. The other players then take their turns by following the Order Board’s order. Turns are divided into four action phases, player can choose one action below:

• Draw Exploration Card Player can explore the map card that the ship places. If player take thisaction, draw one card from Exploration card deck. The maximum number of Exploration card is 6.

If player have more than 6 Exploration cards, they have to discard the extar card at the end of the turn. (see “Exploration cards” explanation on Next Page)

• Cash

Cash action only effective after players find the Treasure chest. Once player cashes his/her treasure card to coins, then discard that treasure card.

• Trade

Player can trade during his/her turn. If other player agree with that deal, anything can be traded during this phases.

• End of Turn Action

When player end his/her turn, the next character on the Order board reveal his/her character, then start his/her turn.

End of The Round

After every player reveal his card, this round ends. Each player return his/her card to the Character deck. Then begin a new round or check the victory.


Exploration Cards There are four kinds of exploration cards that player can discover in the game. It can be a event, a item or a tressure.

• Monster card:

Total are 6 different monsters in this game. Iron Squid, Octopus, Kaiju, Tentacle, Ocean Dragon, Underwater Species. They all have different power, player can see on the cards. When player discover a monster card, reveal it immediately, face up on the table in order to notice everyone that the ship is under attacks.

• Treasure card:

Player can discover Treasure Card from exploration cards. In Blackhearts, there are 6 different value of Treause Cards. When player receive Treasure Cards, they can keep it secretly, but reamember, each player can only have 6 cards in hand total. So try to crash the card during turns. This card indicated that how many treasure coins you can cash during the game. (see Explanation of Cash Phase)

Players need Marine in one of the player’s hand to defeat the monster. That player rolls a 2D6 to battle with monster. If the player lose the battle, then Monster takes damage(s) to the ship. (details are on the card.)

• Craft components card: Player have to collect all the components to build a craft. The numbers of components that need to be collected are indicated on the card.

In order to build a craft, player need to choose Mechanist during the turn. (the craft details is in the description of Mechanist in Character session.)

• Poison card:

When players obtain this card, they can have it for permanent. Also player can have more than one Poison card in hand. The card is only effective when player is Cook. After using, cards return back to hand at the end of the round. Player cannot use more than one card to one player. (the poison details is in the description of Cook in Character session.)
