8 SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE The 5th Semester is devoted to sustainable architecture. “Living Ferrara” is the name of the studio of Professor Stefan Behnisch. The first part of the semester consists of an analysis of various aspects of sustainability in architecture. Different groups are dedicated to a sub-topic and then present it to the rest of the studio. The second part is then to implement the lessons learned in architecture. The master plan by Behnisch Architekten for a currently disused area of Ferrara serves as a basis for the project.

STEFAN BEHNISCH Stefan Behnisch, born 1957, studied philosophy (baccalaureus artium) and economics in Munich, and then architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. After receiving his diploma in 1987, he worked as an architect in Behnisch & Partner before establishing his own practice, Behnisch Architekten, in 1989, together with his father Professor Günter Behnisch. In the following years, he founded additional branch officesof Behnisch Architekten in Los Angeles, Boston and Munich. Stefan Behnisch has been an advocate of sustainable design since he started working as an architect. His firstbuilding abroad, the Institute for Forestry and Nature Research in Wageningen, NL, became a milestone for innovative sustainable solutions. www.behnisch.com

26 ABOUT THE COMPETITION The “Best of Architectural Design” would like to promote the successes of students that inspire and enhance the work produced within the school. In his introduction for last year’s “Best Of” exhibition, Emmanuel Caille, the editor-inchief of the architecture publication D’A, wrote that other than the projects’ sheer seduction, their diversity and multidisciplinary attributes are what truly highlight the EPFL’s distinctiveness as an innovative vehicle for knowledge and teaching. Hence, they may not be the most ‘finished’ projects but instead have been chosen because they are characterized by an elegance rooted in a realization of how to address architecture’s puzzles. Any project from the Bachelor and Master programs can compete, apart from first year projects as they are created within a more collective framework. The selection of projects to be exhibited is then carried out in a single step. Twenty projects are singled out for the exhibition, and eleven further projects are awarded the jury’s mention and presented only within the catalogue. The exhibition ends with a couple of conferences and lectures that will be held at Archizoom in the current academic year. These events are open to the public and are a means for the school to open itself up to the wider EPFL community and the non-academic world, as well as an opportunity for students to complement their studies.

THE “STRIP” The second year is to develop specialist professional expertise: constructing spaces and functional programmes in relation to a variety of contexts. The studio’s work takes place on a “STRIP” shaped site chosen in a relatively hazardous way, but carrying significant urban qualities unique to the city of Lausanne. This is to analyze the different urban and architectonic layers that interact with our intimacy as a user of the city, through the establishment of a particular program. Interrogate the relationships between the individuality of the habitat and the communal sharing of an urban space.

BAKKER & BLANC Marco Bakker, born 1960 in Harlingen NL, studied architecture at the Technical University in Delft. After reveiving his diploma in 1988, he founded, together with Alexandre Blanc, the architectural office BAKKER & BLANC in Freiburg and Biel CH. Since 2009 he is an invited Professor at the EPFL. Alexandre Blanc was born in Geneva. He studied architecture at the EPFL and obtained his diploma in 1990. Thereafter he worked in the office DIENER & DIENER in Basel. In 1992 he founded the architectural office BAKKER & BLANC in Freiburg and Biel together with Marco Bakker. He teaches in the EPFL’s studios as invited Professor since 2009. www.bakkerblanc.ch
