This includes your initial post and 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Due Thursday Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: 

This week you are introduced to a conceptual approach to understanding numbers and basic mathematical operations. Many of this week’s concepts may be presented differently than you remember from grade school, because the way foundational mathematics are taught has changed in the last few decades. This course uses newer and more effective instructional approaches. Choose a topic from the readings this week. Compare and contrast how you first learned about that topic with the way it is presented in this week’s materials. What did you learn that you may not have expected? Give an example of how you can apply what you learned to a situation outside the classroom. Due Monday Post 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Be constructive and professional.

MTH 215T Wk 2 Discussion - Solving Everyday Problems

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Due Thursday Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: 

This week we began to examine relationships between quantities. Some ways we can compare quantities are by using percentages, ratios, rates, and unit labels. In your life, there are likely many situations that require you to compare quantities, understand the meaning of those comparisons, and make decisions based on those comparisons. What is an example of a situation from your professional or personal life that requires you to compare, understand, and make decisions based on quantitative comparison? Be sure to describe the types of quantitative comparisons you had to make, what decisions you made, and why. Would your decision be different if you had the benefit of learning this week’s concepts? Why or why not? Due Monday Post 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Be constructive and professional.

This includes your initial post and 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Due Thursday Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: 

This week we investigate how quantities exist in multiple dimensions (i.e., 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional space). Naturally, we think about the world in three dimensions because that is what we experience daily. As a result, our minds are frequently making qualitative inferences about the space around us. However, we may or may not naturally quantify those situations. Reflect on your day today. Think about all the times you considered how much space something took up to help make a choice. List as many examples from the past 24 hours as

you can recall. Which of those did you quantify (measure) before acting? In which cases might you have saved yourself some resources if you would have used what you are learning this week to quantify the situation? Due Monday Post 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Be constructive and professional.

This week we examine how to solve for an unknown quantity. Some situations may be easily modeled by single variable equations and others might be more difficult. Reflect on your professional or personal world. What is an example of a situation that you might be able to use an equation with a single unknown to help understand? What is an example of a situation that you might not be able to use an equation with a single unknown to understand? What makes an equation with a single unknown helpful in one of your examples but not the other? What patterns exist in your two examples that might be helpful in determining when to use a simple equation? Due Monday Post 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Be constructive and professional.

Congratulations! You have made it to the final week of the course. In the course so far, you have learned about how quantitative reasoning can help you think about different situations in your life. You learned about the history of numbers, different labels for measuring, how numbers help us understand space, and basic algebraic techniques. After reflecting on the content, identify three examples of concepts you have learned from this course and how they can be used in your everyday life. Consider some of your very basic everyday activities can be better understood by applying some concepts from this course and reasoning quantitatively. Due Monday Post 2 replies to classmates or your faculty member. Be constructive and professional.
