Archbishop Sample Celebrates Regis St. Mary Archbishop Alexander K. Sample celebrated the first Mass with the students of Regis St. Mary Catholic School on Friday, September 8, The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Archbishop Sample was on hand to commemorate the official merger of Regis High School and St. Mary Catholic School into one preK-12 school. We are grateful for the Archbishop’s presence on this special occasion. The students hosted a reception in the parish hall for His Excellency after the Mass. They all tremendously enjoyed the opportunity to spend time and have conversation with our Archbishop.

Thank you, Mrs. Gassner! St. Mary campus head cook Mrs. Patty Gassner has retired after dedicating 30 years to the school. She starting working at St. Mary as a dishwasher in 1985 and began as a cook in 1990. Mrs. Gassner left in 1996, but returned in 1999 and had been with us since. Many St. Mary faculty, staff, students and alumni can easily recall the smell of her fresh baked bread filling the hallways in the mornings. Some of our current students’ favorite Mrs. Gassner foods were weiner wraps, mashed potatoes and gravy, pizza stromboli and pizza. Faith Hedrick, fifth grader, described Mrs. Gassner’s pizza as “Awesomeness with cheese!” Thank you, Mrs. Gassner, for sharing your time and talents with us for so many years. We continue to pray for your improved health and for your ability to fully enjoy your retirement with your husband.

1st Annual Alumni Day by Mr. Mike Bauer
The first annual Alumni Day was a great success. What started as a way to help create a more vibrant Regis Alumni Community turned out to be much more. The day was set up to bring alumni back to the campus to enjoy a variety of activities that would incorporate the dedication of the alumni inspired renovation of the Regis Chapel, a tour of the recently unified Regis St. Mary campuses, a free barbecue and a free Regis football game.
Next on the program was a tour of the newly unified Regis St. Mary Catholic School. Regis Student Council members led the group on a tour of the Regis campus, while principal, Rick Schindler led the St. Mary campus tour. Alumni Larry Etzel (‘71), Diane Roark (Schumacher, ‘67), John Kloucek (‘77), Denise Seaman (Cudahey, ‘97) and Dick Voltin (‘65) all agreed that both schools had come a long way since they last wandered the halls.
The festivities started with a 2:00 p.m. Mass in the Regis chapel. A group of alumni spanning the decades participated in a liturgy that featured music provided by alumni Randy Bentz (‘81) and Ron Etzel (‘70). The prize for family participation in the event went to the Kintz family represented by Keith (‘78), Heidi (Petersen, ‘94), Angela (Smith), and Bridget (Turner, ‘82), who were there to honor Keith for the fantastic stained glass window he created for the chapel.
The best part of the day turned out to be the free barbecue. Over 100 people showed up to feast on the burgers and hot dogs cooked to perfection by alum and RAA member, Kevin Joyce (‘86). There was a sixteen team corn hole tournament sponsored by Oregon State Bridge Construction, Inc. owned by alums Craig Gries (‘93) and Rick Silbernagel (‘79) and won by alums Derek (‘09) and Bryce (‘17) Piete. The courtyard was filled with children of alumni playing and having a good time.
The chapel over the years had fallen into disuse with the advent of Masses in the new student center. Alumni Patti Keudell (‘73) and Dave Schumacher (‘67), as part of the creation of the Aspire Center, insisted on a stained glass window to go between the Aspire center and the chapel. Alumni Keith Kintz (‘78) was commissioned to do the window and it became an instant masterpiece. At that point, the group decided that the chapel should be remodeled with the idea that it once again become the heart of Regis. Several other alumni including, Katie Jaeger (Goyins, ‘77), Kelly Alley (Campbell, ‘81), and many others, provided the planning and manpower for the project. Everyone agreed that the Mass was a fitting way to get the Regis Alumni Day off to a good start.
WIN $500
The class of 1995 boasted the largest attendance at the event, with alumni Brian Wanner all the way from New Mexico leading the way. He was joined by Matt & Stacey (Bischoff) Silbernagel, Jason Cowlishaw, Matthew Willmschen, Aaron & Rhonda (Voltin) Schumacher, and Dan Koenig. Event coordinators Sarah Woodley (Brentano, ‘01) and Katie Koenig were pleased with the event and very grateful to all the alums who stepped forward to make the first annual Regis Alumni Day a huge success. With help of the newly forming class ambassadors, the goal is to get the word out to even more alumni for next year’s event and to increase the involvement of the Regis Alumni Community.
We are working hard to strengthen and build relationships within the Regis Alumni Community. Please take a moment to complete this short survey and you will be entered to win up to $500 in Amazon gift cards. http://forms.regishighschool.net/index.php/alumnisurvey/

Freshmen Retreat and Lock-in
St. Mary Campus
Regis St. Mary 3on3 Hoop Tournament
by Regis Campus Minister, Patricia Dol
The freshman class held their retreat on September 22. Driving to the Father Bernard Youth Center with two Regis buses filled with energetic freshman students is exciting, yet very challenging. As I drove the bus and prayed for the freshman class, the thought that went through my mind was,"Oh God, how are you going to move among our kids today? Come Holy Spirit, I entrust them all into your hands." Our day kicked off with our students cheering each other on as they competitively played a couple of bonding games and fought hard to be the winners. Following the games, we had Sarah Kuenzi share from her own life experience about being a freshman in a new school and the difficulties she encountered as a student trying very hard to fit in and to earn the respect and love of others. The highlight of her sharing was, "What can I do, rather than what can I gain?" That we need not to look inwardly, but more outwardly, believing that we are important, not because of who we are, but because of the positive impact we can have on others. After the talk the students split into groups and were able to discuss in a more sacred space some of the struggles that they encounter in the beginning of the school year. Deciding on a class motto was a great task to achieve, but the students were able to come to a consensus and agree on their four year motto, "We are family, so forget about me, we care about us."
A huge THANK YOU to all the athletes, parents, volunteers, sponsors, referees and spectators for making the tournament a huge success! Approximately 475 spectators came thru the entry gate to watch 49 teams (190 players and 49 coaches) compete. The tournament required the help of 14 referees that included parent volunteers and referees from Mid-Valley Basketball Officials Association and Salem Basketball Officials Association.
Congratulations to our winners! TEAM CHAMPIONS: 1st/2nd Co-Ed – Got Buckets? 3rd/4th Boys – Devils 3rd/4th Girls – Girls Got Game 5th/6th Boys – Mid Valley Elite 5th/6th Girls – Laced Up 7th/8th Boys – SYBA 7th/8th Girls – 541 Men's 18+ – Day 1

THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING 2017 3ON3 TOURNAMENT SPONSORS: The retreat came to a close with the beautiful celebration of the Mass celebrated by Fr. John Paul, a missionary priest of the Holy Spirit Fathers in Mount Angel. The retreat was followed up by a lock-in in the Regis gym, complete with laser tag and movies. Great memories were made for the graduating class of 2021.

Fire Prevention WEEK
A big thank you to the Stayton Fire District Firefighters who came to visit the St. Mary campus for Fire Prevention Week, which was October 8-14. The PreK through fourth grade students enjoyed getting to see a firefighter all geared up and learned many important lessons about fire safety.
8th Grade Outdoor School Mrs. Heuberger and our 22 St. Mary eighth grade students enjoyed the Outdoor School experience on September 25th – 29th at Hancock Field Station in Fossil, Oregon. A few of the trip highlights were field astronomy, Lapidary (polishing thunder eggs), fossil hunting, the four hour Geology/Paleontology hike and of course, the class bonding. The weekend long reunion had a no host happy hour on Friday evening, Sept 8th, a dinner buffet event on Sept 9th at Trexler Farm in Lyons and a no host breakfast gathering at Neufeldt’s Restaurant in Aumsville on Sunday the 10th.
“
We had such a great time chatting that we didn't get a photo! They even held dinner for an hour because everyone was busy visiting. The blessing of a small town is that many of us went to grade school and high school together. All of our memories have each other in them!! We grew up knowing each other's parents AND siblings. So much of our discussions were getting updated on each other's families. And of course, talking about our OWN kids and grand kids for those of us who were starting that chapter of life. All in all, a VERY fun event! Patty (Jungwirth) Kintz

Brand Identity Project Gets Underway
On July 1, 2017, St. Mary Catholic School and Regis High School officially merged into one Pre-K to 12th grade institution on two campuses. While the administration, boards of directors and curriculum have been successfully integrated, there have been many questions surrounding the new corporate name, Regis St. Mary Catholic School. We want our school community to feel comfortable embracing our new name and everything it represents for our students, our educational quality, school leadership and financial sustainability.
Now, we’re in the process of officially rolling out that name change to our entire school community. To do that, we’re formalizing our brand identity, and inviting you to participate. A brand identity system simply embraces how we feel about our school, and how we describe it to our community. Our identity is in the words we use and in the designs we see. It will include new school logos for our programs so that when you see it, you’ll think of Regis St. Mary Catholic School. More importantly, it will reflect what the new school name means to you. Over the next few months, we are inviting our school community to help us develop our new identity through a strategic branding process. Through individual interviews, meetings with an advisory group, and a community-wide survey, we will develop a formal brand strategy that will help us ensure we have accurate and consistent implementation of what it means to be part of Regis St. Mary Catholic School. Watch for your email invitation to comment on our online survey in the coming weeks.
Dear Regis St. Mary Community, What does your gift to our Catholic school really mean? What kind of fruit does it produce? Gratitude: A young couple’s first born began in the school this year. Not long after, the child was remonstrating his parents because they were not praying before dinner. Now, the family prays in gratitude before every meal. Your gift to Regis St. Mary Catholic School produces gratitude. Community: A transfer family brought their nine-year old to our school last year. They reported that within just a few weeks their child had many new best friends and that they as parents felt connected to something greater than themselves. The parents experienced a sense of community in the school that they did not have elsewhere. Your gift to Regis St. Mary Catholic School produces community. Opportunity: “We have tuition assistance available for any family that wants a Regis St. Mary education,” I said to this potential new family. This was a family really wanting a Catholic education for their children, but didn't know it could be a reality. Through our assistance program, they joined our school and since brought two of their relatives’ families to our school for a total of six new students who value a Catholic education. Your gift to Regis St. Mary Catholic School produces opportunity. Faith: “We have to go to Mass,” exclaims the kindergartner to his parents one Sunday. Not being raised Catholic, the parents were honestly intimidated and unsure how to react and talk with their son about his newfound zeal for all things Catholic. When they enrolled in the school, they did expect a Christian faith experience, but not this kind of evangelistic fervor from their young son. Fast forward six months and you witness the parents joining the Church through RCIA at the Easter Vigil. Your gift to Regis St. Mary Catholic School produces faith. Hope: A family was really concerned about their child who was failing most subjects at another school. His personality had shifted and his doctor informed the parents that he was depressed and needed to be on medication. They switched to Regis St. Mary and within a couple of weeks saw a drastic improvement in not only his academics, but his personality. He was enjoying school and had hope back in his eyes. Your gift to Regis St. Mary Catholic School produces hope. Your gifts to Regis St. Mary produce the most important things in life. Thank you to all of the individual people and organizations who have contributed to our school. Your sacrifice and sustained generosity continues to amaze and humble me. Your gifts enable us to carry out our mission of faith, excellence, service, and leadership on the Regis and St. Mary Campuses in support of Catholic education in the Santiam Vicariate. Thank you!
