We had a busy summer getting ready for this school year and made a number of improvements to our Regis Campus physical plant. We were blessed by four long-standing supporters and donors to our school (Freres Lumber Co., North Santiam Paving Co., Power Auto Group, and the AJ Frank Family Foundation) who contributed $400,000 total to help renovate our academic building and provide support for our newly hired Director of Marketing and Enrollment. These incredible benefactors continue to humble and amaze me with their generosity and unfailing support (more details on page 4). In addition to those fantastic upgrades, we were also able to complete a remodel of the girls locker room, build a new storage shed for our drama program, and install a new LED reader board sign along our First Street frontage. Paralleling the physical improvements, our Regis St. Mary faculty and staff are in the middle of an accreditation self-study for the entire PreK12 school. Accreditation is a once-every-six-years process whereby the school is reviewed inside and out from its stakeholders. The primary focus is on improving the teaching and learning cycle, as well as our Catholic identity. Surveys are being conducted and a massive review exercise is being carried out to pull together our most critical areas for growth and develop action plans for improvement. Visitors representing the Western Catholic Education Association will be here in the 2019-2020 school year to review our plans and audit our program. In conjunction with the aforementioned are the objectives of our five-year strategic plan, which continue to guide our overall school improvement and were outlined in the Summer issue of the quarterly. The four areas in which the Regis St. Mary Board of Directors is focused on are: Governance and Leadership, Mission and Catholic Identity, Academic Excellence and Operational Vitality. We are fortunate and continually blessed by so many wonderful opportunities and supporters and I appreciate your ongoing prayers for our students and the school. Sincerely in Christ,

Regis St. Mary Upgrades Facilities, Enrollment Thanks to Major Local Donors Major updates to the Regis Campus academic building took place this summer thanks to significant donations from four local businesses. In just three short months, Principal Rick Schindler oversaw this renovation project from conception to reality. While the donors’ contributions were mainly focused on building renovation, they also funded a new fulltime faculty position titled Marketing and Enrollment. Changes to the school include new flooring, lighting and electrical work, paint for hallways and classrooms and new whiteboards. These updates have, and will, greatly transform the look and feel of the school and would not be possible without the generosity of four local businesses: Freres Lumber Co. Inc., North Santiam Paving Co., Power Auto Group and A.J. Frank Foundation. Seeing local businesses come forth to support these school upgrades is exciting for school officials, students and the community alike. “What these projects show to me is that the people who built this school continue to be invested in the school both literally and figuratively. They are emotionally

and financially behind our school system and what it stands for,” says Schindler. Meetings with the grantors began in late June. Within just three days, a combined total of $400,000 was committed by the local benefactors to begin remodeling in July. “We took a tour and were surprised at the condition of parts of the facility, so four families contributed to improve Regis’ appearance and feel. We also wanted to help enrollment by hiring the right person. We look forward to seeing more bright-eyed students receiving a great Catholic education,” says Rob Freres, President of Freres Lumber Co., Inc. For the most part, building renovations are complete; just a few building upgrades are left to be completed by the end of the calender year. Response to the complete projects has been positive so far. “The transformation of room ten from an old science room into an updated scientific laboratory is breathtaking! The new tables are ideal for group discussions, and technology integration will be much more streamlined now in our new space” says science teacher Mandy Miotke.

Duman Conrad-Evans Math Grant The 2018 recipient of the Duman Conrad-Evans Math Grant is Luiz Medina. Luiz received a $500 Regis St. Mary tuition credit for his achievement as the most improved Algebra 1 student during the 2017-2018 school year. Congratulations, Luiz!
Regis St. Mary seventh through twelfth graders participated in the Feed My Starving Children Community Mobile Pack at Stayton High School on October 26th. Following the Mobile Pack, Regis Campus students spent the entire day learning about hunger and our obligation as Christians to feed the poor. The activities began with packing meals as part of the Santiam Canyon Feed My Starving Children event. All told we prepared hundreds of meals in a two hour period that will be shipped overseas to help keep children alive in many impoverished countries. We then returned to Regis and learned about the Irish famine of the 1850's and compared it to the famine in Yemen that is taking place today. Following lunch, we attended a presentation about the great work being done by the Union Gospel Mission in combating homelessness and hunger in Salem. The talks were eye-opening and we hope to partner with them on some class specific service projects during Lent. After completing some individual class and art projects that reinforced the lessons we learned during the day, we concluded with a brief prayer service guided by the words of St. Teresa of Avila that challenge us to be the hands and feet of Christ in the modern world. — Jim Tabor, Theology Teacher

St. Mary Campus Greetings St. Mary Campus Students and Parents! Now that October is coming to an end so has our 2018 St. Mary Campus volleyball season. Starting the season
with only three girls having played school ball before, we anticipated looking at a ‘building” year for this team. However, with the commitment and practice dedication each team member brought to the court; we saw a year of strong competition and constant improvement. Not only did we win at least 1 match every game day, we walked away with 3 wins out of our last 4 games! What a gift it was to see each player push themselves past what they thought they could do and the dedication showed! With that being said, our biggest win was the teamwork and positive support each player gave to another.
T together E each A achieves M more!
Thank you for sharing this successful season with myself and my family! I also want to thank all of the team parents who rallied around the girls, ensuring we made it to all the games and had the resources that we needed, Mr. Heuberger for keeping us up to date with changes and a special thanks to Jamie Kometz, who was my team parent support and kept our group organized!
Go Falcons!

8th Grade Outdoor School
Every fall the 8th grade class at Regis St. Mary has the opportunity to participate in a week long field trip to Hancock Field Station in Fossil for Outdoor School. This experience can best be described as an outdoor classroom where students engage in science-based learning activities from sun up to sun down. In addition, students and chaperones spend many hours in the day hiking around the beautiful hillsides of the John Day National Monument, living a rustic lifestyle sleeping in cabins, eating family-style in a semi-outdoor hall and even unplugging from technology. The experience is also a time where students are able to deepen their bonds with classmates. 8th grade year at Regis St. Mary has many special culminating opportunities, and Outdoor School sets the stage for the year. A special thanks to our chaperones: Mrs. Karen Hendricks, Mr. Brian Hendricks, Mrs. Juile Laube, Mr. Jason Laube, Mrs. Carmela Flett, Mr. Matt Voltin, Mr. Mike Schumacher, Mr. Mike Boedigheimer and Mr. Art Fromherz for helping to make this experience possible for our students. — Michelle Heuberger, Middle School Science Teacher

Lego League Jr.
Our students love legos, so we created a Lego Robotics club to harness that creativity using STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math). We joined FIRST Lego League Jr., and students meet weekly to tackle challenges relating to the league's topic. The theme this year is Mission Moon, with students designing and creating a functioning moon base out of legos and programming them with robotic features to sustain life in that moon base. (For example, in session 4, students learned that water might be frozen underground in the moon's craters. Teams built and programmed lego drills and sweepers to retrieve and transport the ice back to a storage facility they designed.) After the course of 10 sessions, the moon base will be complete. Students will create a showcase poster for a Lego Expo event, where they will join teams from across the state to present and be interviewed about their moon base. Since it is a new program, we're currently piloting it in 2nd and 4th grade. We hope to launch next school year with many teams spanning the full age range of the league (ages 6-10). The 2nd grade Lego Robotics team, coached by Michelle Heuberger (St. Mary Campus science teacher), includes Corbin Brown, Paisley Heuberger, Rhys Kirkpatrick, Francesca Koehnke, Henry Miotke and Luke Schmidlkofer. The 4th grade Lego Robotics team, coached by Mandy Miotke (Regis Campus science teacher), includes Addison Bishop, Maddie Hendricks, William Miotke, Toto Papathanasopoulos, Carter Roberts and Emmett Wagenaar. — Mandy Miotke, High School Science Teacher
bar would sink or float in water. Afterwards, students tested their predictions. Last, students used the density formula to calculate the density of their candy bars. We focus our time on the Science and Engineering Practices as outlined by the Next Generation Science Standards. November's club meeting had students designing houses to resist damage in an earthquake. They tested their designs using a shake table.

Regis Volleyball
We had a great varsity season with one team this year consisting of 12 players. We took 1st place at the East Linn Volleyball Tournament and Holly Blish received MVP of the Tournament. In league, we finished 3rd place with a 8-6 record, 12-8 overall. We ended up being #13 overall in the 2A Division. The Lady Rams qualified for the 2018 2A State Volleyball championships, where we faced a tough #5 ranked Weston-McEwen in the first round of the State tournament. We played hard, but unfortunately came up short. These 12 players had an amazing season! Our team was also recognized for the All Conference Awards : Holly Blish 1st Team, Alicen Ditter 2nd Team, Hailey Voltin, Emily Schumacher and Sara Vetter all received Honorable Mention. Each season we continue to get better and better. We are looking forward to making it back to the state tournament next year. Go Rams!! — Coach Summers

Soon after, we gathered in the fireside room to hear Mark Dol sharing about the art of Kintsukuroi, which is a centuries old Japanese art of mending broken pottery. Gold dust mixed with resin is used to reattach broken pieces or fill in cracks, resulting in a striking bond. Instead of trying to hide the repair, the artist makes something beautiful out of brokenness. When we are broken and hurting, Jesus does not do a cheap fix. He mends it with the priceless forgiveness, generously offered at the cross and receives us with love when we humble ourselves before Him, and closeness is restored. Mark challenged our freshmen to go beyond their group bias and reach out to those that were not in their inner circle. In recognizing differences we find unity in diversity. This heals division in a group and makes us stronger as we stand as one, rather than being divided. After the small group session, Katelyn Adams a 2012 Regis graduate demonstrated to us that the toothpaste that comes out from the tube, we are not able to put it in again. A great reminder of how much power our words and actions have on others. Once said or done, some things we cannot take back and we must think twice before we speak out and act. In the final session, the students started brainstorming for their class motto, a motto that they are encouraged to live by for the next four years at Regis. After some time, the class managed to reach a consensus: "By valuing our unique diversity we make our class family; LEGENDARY." Fr. Andrew Schwenke from the Benedictine Abbey was our Mass celebrant. His homily was very inspiring as he encouraged our students to spend less time on their phones and electronic devices and encouraged them to value the time that they have with family and friends. He also touched on the importance of respect for people in authority. After lunch, the students teamed up with a classmate that they were not familiar with. By taking a few minutes to introduce themselves to the other person, they came to a deeper understanding of one another. In this way the students all grew in a deeper understanding of their class. This class truly deserved a treat, so on our homeward route we stopped at Dairy Queen to eat ice cream and reminisce together the wonderful day spent in building, loving and caring for one another. — Patricia Dol, Campus Minister

The RAA, in partnership with The Stayton Kiwanis Club, brought back the bonfire for our students during spirit week. Everyone from current students, to alumni, siblings and community members were there to share their school spirit. All involved thought it was a great time and are excited to participate again next year. Alumna Nikki Voltin said, “It was fun to see the kids get into it, yelling and cheering.” Many thanks to those who donated pallets and wood for the bonfire: Randy's Towing, Frank Lumber Co., Power Auto Sports and Riches Seeds. A special thanks also goes to Mike and Kelly Alley, who provided food for the students.

WANTED: Catholic families to discover a great lifetime game they call golf. It’s a game that can be enjoyed and played from childhood through adulthood with all members of your family, with friends, at the Regis St. Mary Ram Open, and yes, even with strangers at golf courses in America and all over the world. This is why golf is truly one of the best lifetime fellowship games that exists. People love it because every golf course has 18 different God’s nature trails to absorb, ponder and relish with pleasure. Our team sports are also truly great, but after schooling is done, we tend to watch others play these team sports and not play ourselves. Why not have your child follow in Dawson Dickey’s footsteps? He just won the Santiam Golf Club Men’s Club Championship. At eighteen years of age, he became the youngest champion ever. He was a 2018 Regis graduate and a member of the Ram golf team. His sister, Camille (‘16) also participated on the girls’ golf team and his younger brother Drew, a current Regis St. Mary freshman, is likewise looking forward to playing on the Regis team. A side note, Dawson's dad, Daren (‘89) is a recent men’s club champion as well, and it just so happens that he had a hole-in-one the same weekend Dawson won his championship. The short end of this is, you have to buy everyone at the club a soft drink for this achievement, It’s something like happy hour. — Coach Don Dickey

2nd Annual Alumni Day Dear Regis Alumni:
The second annual Regis Campus Alumni Day & Cornhole Tournament was a great success. What started as a way to help create a more vibrant Regis Alumni Community turned out to be much more. The day was set up to bring alumni back to the campus to enjoy a variety of activities that would incorporate tours of the new upgrades to the classroom building including all new flooring, lighting, desks, and paint, as well as a free barbecue, a cornhole tournament sponsored by the class of 1988 and a free entrance into the Regis football game. The heart of the day turned out to be the free barbecue. Over 120 people showed up to feast on the burgers and hot dogs cooked to perfection by Regis alums and current faculty, Jim and Rich Tabor. The courtyard was filled with children of alumni playing and having a good time. Event Coordinator Katie Koenig was pleased with the event and very grateful to all the alums who stepped forward to make the second annual Regis Alumni day a huge success. With help of the newly forming class ambassadors, the goal is to get the word out to even more alumni for next year’s event and to increase the involvement of the Regis Alumni Community.
