Counselor's

CORNER Regis St. Mary Aspire — “Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed” - Proverbs 15:22

Teacher Feature

Mr. Andrew Rice 3 Years at Regis St. Mary Catholic School Algebra I, Algebra II, Calculus, Geometry National Honor Society Advisor, Head Track Coach

“Every year, across all levels of math, the same commonly asked question arises: “When am I gonna use this in the real world?” Curricula is constantly redesigned to add more applications to what students learn and how they show up in career paths like medicine, business, engineering, etc., but every year, students roll their eyes or counter with, “My career won’t use math.” What we teach at Regis St. Mary goes well beyond applications to how the world works. We push every student to advance their math knowledge, and in turn, teach them how to think logically, how to be persistent, how to problem solve and how to make correct decisions. It’s why 8th graders learn complex logarithms and why Calculus students are prepared for the AP exam and learn topics typically taught in 3rd year college math. We’re not just getting students ready to be doctors, architects or engineers. We’re getting students in position to be exceptional human beings.” — Mr. Rice "If all teachers were like Mr. Rice, there would be too many perfect scores on the math portion of the SAT, for the level of enthusiasm, passion, and efficiency he brings to the classroom is unparalleled. It's difficult not to excel in his class. Only under his teaching and guidance do I feel fully confident to take my AP exam for Calculus this Spring, because I know that I have received the finest preparation." — Dawson D., Class of 2018

“I am not a morning person, but there are a few things that get me out of bed: sunrise on our farm, the smell of fresh baked croissants, and my 8:00 am Algebra class with Mr. Rice! His enthusiasm for mathematics, his belief in our ability to improve and understand it and his humor make it a class everyone enjoys and does well in. Mr. Rice does a fantastic job at explaining difficult concepts in a way everyone can understand. My parents, who studied math at the University of Edinburgh, are amazed at the pace and depth of our classwork. Mr. Rice has inspired me to love math and really excel at it.” — Mimi P., Class of 2022

Regis St. Mary Aspire program is unlike any other mentoring program. Our 17 mentors are comprised of community members, Regis alumni, business owners and grandparents and parents of our beloved students. However, most importantly, they are dedicated volunteers and wonderful leaders of faith. Together, our mentors volunteer over 300 hours a year in one-on-one meetings with students, organizing and accompanying on job shadowing and career opportunities, touring colleges, researching and helping in any way that can. This group of mentors are the first to step up to volunteer, lead with new ideas and truly work as a team. Regis St. Mary is truly blessed to have such inspiring examples for our students to walk in faith, help plan their future and pray for them along the way. — Mrs. Selena Schumacher, Regis St. Mary Counselor MEET OUR MENTORS Rick Kauffman with Casey Humphreys, Noah Fowler and Dawson Dickey — Class of 2018 Louise Wiltsey with Rachel Dolby — Class of 2108 CLASS OF 2018 FEATURE Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. Cheyenne Cox was selected by the Regis St. Mary staff because she demonstrates these qualities to an outstanding degree. Congratulations, Cheyenne, we are so proud of you!

PreK-12 Regis St. Mary celebrated Catholic schools January 29 through February 1 with a number of fun activities, including a combined Regis St. Mary Mass at Immaculate Conception, the Book Fair, CSW 2018 Tweets, a trip to the Star Theatre for PreK-5 and a bowling outing and listening to guest speaker, Kevin Ashworth, with the Blanchet students for the 6-12th graders. Kevin Ashworth is the co-founder of the Northwest Anxiety Institute. Kevin aims to provide effective, evidence-based treatment to individuals struggling with anxiety disorders using humor, kindness, and compassion. He spoke with the 6 -12th grade students about what anxiety is and how difficult it can be to talk about with adults. The students were given an assignment to share something they learned from the presentation with their parents. Did your student share? Social media's effect on children and the increased anxiety it produces was also discussed. Kevin said, "With social media, the comparisons never stop! Comparison is the thief of happiness." The students were given the opportunity to have their questions answered and left the presentation with a new set of knowledge regarding anxiety disorders.

Spiritual Retreat While our students enjoyed a day off of school on Tuesday, February 20, the Regis St. Mary faculty and staff came together for a spiritual retreat at the Mt. Angel Abbey. The day included fellowship and small group discussion time, a talk by Deacon Steve Tabor entitled, “What Is Joy?,” Mass celebrated by Bishop Peter Smith on the theme “Joy in Suffering” in the chapel beneath the Abbey Church, followed by lunch and a talk by Bishop Peter entitled “Joy in Ministry.” A special thank you to Deacon Steve Tabor and Bishop Peter Smith for their inspiring and thought provoking talks on the retreat’s theme of JOY. Future First Citizen

Senior Theology Research Papers The senior theology class wrapped up the first semester by writing research papers on topics that interested them and were relevant to the Catholic faith. Theology instructor Jim Tabor received a number of very good essays on very interesting topics. Here is a sampling of what a few of our best and brightest had to say: ‘The Catholic Church finds using leftover blastocysts unethical and unjust because in paragraph 2261 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church it clearly states, “Do not slay the innocent and the righteous. The deliberate murder of an innocent person is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human being, to the golden rule, and to the holiness of the Creator. The law forbidding it is universally valid: it obliges each and everyone, always and everywhere” and this has little room for interpretation.’ Excerpt from Lily Fery’s Essay entitled “Embryonic Stem Cell Controversy”

Regis senior Wyatt Heuberger was named the Stayton Area Rotary's Future First Citizen. His award was presented on February 16 at the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce Community Awards Luncheon. Principal Rick Schindler introduced Wyatt, calling him “a humble young man who indeed can do it all.” Mr. Schindler went on to say, “At Regis, we have been blessed with Wyatt Heuberger these last four years. Wyatt participated and was very successful in football, track, and cross country. He serves on Student Council and acts in our dramas and musicals. If you didn’t see his Lord Farquaad from Shrek last Spring, you missed out on a legendary performance. Wyatt is also brilliant in the classroom, acing Calculus his junior year and scoring in the 99th percentile on the ACT. On the interpersonal side, he is a great mentor to our younger students and is the senior leader for our juniors on their encounter weekend retreat.” Congratulations on such a prestigious honor, Wyatt!

8 • REGIS ST. MARY NEWSLETTER • SPRING 2018

‘St. Pope John Paul II said, When the Book of Genesis speaks of "help", it is not referring merely to acting, but also to being. Womanhood and manhood are complementary not only from the physical and psychological points of view, but also from the ontological. It is only through the duality of the "masculine" and the "feminine" that the "human" finds full realization. “Adam recognized Eve's religious equality with himself in the joyous cry with which he greeted her, ‘Bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh!’” (Rousseau). Men and women are different, but that’s because God intentionally created them that way. Their differences are what unites them in a complete, equal, and empowering way.’ Excerpt from Emily Adam’s Essay entitled “Woman: A Beautiful Creation”

‘In this day and age, life is thrown around with little value. It is easily created, easily destroyed, and easily taken for granted. There are many issues today that bellittle the value and dignity of a human life with some popular examples being abortion and euthanasia. However, one issue not mentioned often, is surrogacy. It is proven that about 10% of couples are infertile by accepted medical definitions and many couples, who are looking to have a family, are looking to surrogacy as a option (About Surrogacy).’ Excerpt from Payton Chamberland’s Essay entitled “Surrogacy: The Catholic Church's’ View vs the Material World”

Rock of Ages was a huge undertaking, but I was again impressed by the remarkable talent that exists at Regis. The 54 students that participated were dynamic and brave, and I could not be happier with how it turned out. It goes to show that these kids deserve to be recognized and they were by receiving the America RISE grant. They are an amazing group of young people, and I could not feel more blessed or privileged to be a part of their journey. — Anna Boedigheimer, Regis St. Mary Drama Teacher

Reflecting back on my time spent at Regis, I am so thankful for the opportunities I was able to take advantage of. The small size of the school was blessing in disguise as it allowed me to form a personal relationship with the administration, which was beneficial when it came to tailoring my education to suit my goals. Over the years I was able to take classes from some of the many gifted teachers at Regis, but also transfer credits from online courses and from Stayton's public school. I had some fantastic teachers who encouraged me to think critically and develop my writing skills. Ultimately I think this is what allowed me to perform well on standardized tests and in turn get accepted into my first pick of schools. Members of our faculty also connected me to excellent outside programs like the Salem Art Association's High School Art Internship and Ford Institute Leadership Program that diversified my college applications and prepared me for the world of job interviews and professional development. Overall, I believe my experiences at Regis prepared me for success at Marymount University, through fantastic teachers, great guidance counselors, and a multitude of opportunities within the community. — Katherine Bentz, Sociology Major at Marymount University, Regis Class of 2017

One of the alumni in attendance at our first annual Regis Alumni Day was John Kloucek (’77), and like the rest of the alumni who were there, John had an interesting journey after Regis to share. John came from a then typical family of 4 children, Loren, Dan and Janet (all Regis graduates). He distinguished himself in track as an excellent 880 yard runner while at Regis. Upon graduation, John attended the University of Portland and earned a degree in 1981 and received a degree in dentistry from OHSU 1984. John has practiced dentistry for 32 years in the Portland area. In addition to practicing, he was on the faculty at OHSU Dental School. At present, he continues to do both. John has also served on several alumni boards including at UP and Oregon Health and Sciences University. John is married to Julie and has 3 grown children David, 30, Thomas, 29, and Sarah, 27. John and Julie’s children attended 3 different Catholic High Schools: David at Central Catholic, Thomas at Jesuit, and Sarah at St. Mary’s Academy. — Mike Bauer STMARYSTAYTON.ORG • REGISHIGHSCHOOL.NET •
