Dear Regis St. Mary Community, In December 2016 we launched a five-year strategic plan for our school. This plan established a vision of a preferred future and provided direction for maintaining our school’s excellence. Each goal and strategy in the plan was designed to achieve this future, and the plan is already bearing fruit. There are four main areas under which our goals were established. Below is each area, goal, and an update on our progress to date. We are excited and proud to state that we have achieved much in these last two-anda-half years and are looking forward to continuing our focus on faith and excellence. www.regisstmary.org

"It’s easy to be passionate about science because it’s everywhere. Observe any part of God’s beautiful creation, ask questions about how or why it works the way it does, and you’re doing science! Science embraces the natural curiosity in all of us. Skills like observing, asking questions, making predictions, forming explanations, using evidence to support your reasoning and communicating with others are integral to life outside the classroom. As our world becomes increasingly STEM-driven, mastery of those skills is essential for future success. We refine those skills everyday in science class, preparing students to effectively gather information and solve problems in the real world. How do we practice those skills is science class? With hands-on, creative experiments using current laboratory equipment and technology, of course. Science is fun!” — Mrs. Miotke
Flight Team Helping One Another in Crisis Dear Regis St. Mary Community, I would love to introduce you to a wonderful team of school counselors within our Catholic Schools community that have formed a school crisis response team. Our Flight Team is comprised of 30 school counselors (primarily from Catholic Schools within the Archdiocese of Portland) trained in crisis response, trauma, suicide prevention and intervention, grief and loss. In the event of a school crisis, the Flight Team is deployed in an effort to tend to the needs of the school, students and community. Since the Flight Team was developed this past year, we have been deployed several times to aid when a faculty member or a parent passed away, and have been available to offer valuable resources to our school neighbors. This Flight Team is a beautiful demonstration of love and care for one another. In a world where one does not have to look too far to witness disconnect, disharmony, and suffering, our Flight Team comes together, offers help and support and says, “You are not alone.” What a beautiful community Regis St. Mary is blessed to be a part of and how thankful I am to be a part of an amazing team. Selena Schumacher, School Counselor Regis St. Mary
It's really good and really fun, sometimes disgusting, but really fun. My favorite thing to do with Mrs. Miotke has been learning about particles. I am so glad to have her here." — Hank Foltz, Third Grade
"What I love about Mrs. Miotke is that not only does she teach us the meaning of science, but she explains the reasoning behind it. She can also relate what we are learning to the real world and when we will use it in life. What I really appreciate is how we are constantly doing hands on learning. It's not just taking notes and answering questions in a book. We learn in a variety of ways, which personally helps me remember and learn better. I know that she is always available to help if I don't understand something, whether it be during lunch, break or just a quick email." — Alexis Vaughn, Class of 2019 WWW.REGISSTMARY.ORG •

Ted F. Freres
May 30, 1950 - June 3, 2018
Oregon wood products pioneer, philanthropist, husband, father and grandfather Ted F. Freres, passed away on Sunday, June 3 following a year-long battle against pancreatic cancer. Although the last year brought unique suffering, Ted battled the disease without compromising his finest qualities: kindness, determination and humility. He was practical to the end and didn’t give up the fight or hope until he decided there was no end-game to it. The strength, comradery and devotion Ted and Diane built during their 45 years of marriage sustained them both through the difficult trials of the last year, which those caring for Ted stated was nothing short of miraculous. Ted was born to T. G. Freres and Frances Freres (Silbernagel) on May 30, 1950. Ted was pre-deceased by his siblings Larry Freres, Harold “Bud” Freres and Phyllis Goodman. Ted is survived by wife Diane; sons Cameron (Pamela), Kyle (Trisha) and Tyler (Deana); grandsons Hap, Rand, Asher, Theo, Sawyer and Cassius; brother Robert T. Junior Encounter
The Junior Encounter was held at the Father Bernard Youth Center April 13-15. Wyatt Heuberger was the rector, Lily Fery the assistant rector and Kyle and Casey Humphreys, Nate Joyce, Emily Adams, Rachel Dolby and Catherine Wavra formed part of the leadership team. This year, we decided to introduce the "Alpha Youth Program" to the Junior Encounter. Since we had to do the Alpha Youth Course over a weekend, we selected only eight sessions starting with "Life, Is this it?" followed by the "Life of Jesus" and "Why He died on the Cross", "How Can We Have Faith" and "Why Do We Read the Bible.” Late Saturday morning, we focused more on "Evil in the World," followed by Reconciliation, and in the latter part of the afternoon, we moved on to sharing about "Who is the Holy Spirit" and "How Can We be Filled with the Holy Spirit.” The sessions concluded on Saturday evening with the last topic focusing on "How Does God Guide Us into Full Life.” The Fireside room presented a great cafeteria atmosphere, as every group sat in their own circle sipping coffee and hot cocoa and discussing the thought provoking questions presented during the sessions. For every episode, we had a facilitator that gave an introduction to the beginning of the session, and at the end, made closure by sharing their personal testimony related to the topic. During Rachel's testimony, as she was sharing about the experience of the Holy Spirit in her life, we had a mild

tremor quake. Every topic was then followed by small groups were the juniors and seniors had more time to share and discuss more openly about the topic. On Sunday morning, Father Juan Pablo, a priest from the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit in Mount Angel, celebrated Mass for us and focused his homily on the gift of the sacraments and how they impact our lives. After Mass, the Junior Encounter took on a lighter atmosphere as the juniors prepared skits in their small groups and then presented them in front of everyone. Some of the highlights for the Junior Encounter were the trust walk, the encouragement letters (Palankas), the Alpha sessions, the recreation time on Saturday afternoon, games, campfire with smores and the strength bombardment session in the small groups. A big thank you goes to all the senior students who prayed, prepared well and brought lots of creative ideas to the Junior Encounter. Every senior was a wonderful testimony of God's love, care and compassion. And last but not least, a shout out goes to all the chaperones who gave up their weekend to chaperone and support all the students on this Junior Encounter. Matthew 18 verse 20: "Again, I tell you truly that if two of you on the earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in Heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.” — Patricia Dol, Campus Minister

6th Annual Twilight Track Meet
The Regis Community Twilight meet has grown from 16 teams in the beginning, to 31 teams this year. Teams use the meet as a tune up for their district meets the following week. Each year the quality of the teams gets better, and the times and distances rank among the best in the state. The first year of the event in 2012, the group now called the Regis Twilight Committee, enlisted the help of the Stayton business community by asking businesses to sponsor an event. The generous nature of the community came to the fore, and this year, all 34 events in the meet were sponsored.
National Decision Day
On May 1, students across the nation celebrated National Decision Day. Congratulations to our seniors and their next best steps. We are so proud of you! “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5
Alumni from throughout the years returned to get involved in the meet. In fact, this year out of a total of over 100 volunteers, sponsors, or organizers, almost 50 of those were Regis alumni. "It is gratifying to see so many alumni return to give back to the school at the Regis Community Twilight Invitational and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow alumni and members of the community as they provide a quality experience for athletes, coaches, parents and the community. We are grateful to all the sponsors, volunteers, athletes and supporters who helped to make the Twilight Meet such a huge success." - Mr. Mike Bauer

Congratulations to Mr. Eric Loftin and the Regis Campus Fine Arts Program for being a recipient of an $1,800 grant for a new pottery wheel for the 2018-2019 school year. Thank you, Mr. Steve Gehlen and Keeping the Arts, for your generosity!
Archways to Education Grant
Regis Campus Garden
During the Fall of 2017, Mr. Jim Tabor’s Catholic Social Teaching class reviewed Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment titled Laudato Si (On Care for our Common Home). A part of this study included learning about sustainable agriculture practices and the need for all of us to help feed the poor healthy food. After getting advice from a local organic farmer and observing the students work efforts on the MarionPolk County Foodshare Youth Farm during our Lent day of service, Tabor determined it was feasible to have the students run a large vegetable garden at the Regis Campus as part of the theology and service programs. Each class at Regis will work in the garden for approximately 1 hour each month. All the produce raised in the garden will be donated to the local food bank or consumed by families of the school.
Sal Muscardin, owner of the Stayton McDonald's, presented a McDonald's/DSK Inc. Archways to Education grant award of $4,000 to the Regis Campus on May 2. The funds were used for new equipment in the weight room and for the new drama storage shed. Thank you, Mr. Muscardin!
A site has been identified on the Regis property that has access to water, a full day of the sun and is away from any trees. We are excited to give our students the opportunity to directly serve Christ and our brothers and sisters in need right here in our community. Mrs. Bishop’s Kindergarten class came over from the St. Mary Campus to help the Seniors plant our first fruit and vegetable starts. WWW.REGISSTMARY.ORG •

3rd-5th Grade Science Club
Many younger students hear about and see projects the middle school science students are working on, whether it be Science Olympiad, Science Fair, etc. and they want to know when they can participate. As a response, Mrs. Heuberger got teachers together and they came up with the idea of a science club. The St. Mary Campus 3rd-5th Grade Science Club met weekly from April 20 to June 8. Miss Brooks, Ms. Kester, Ms. Kroon and Mrs. Heuberger all assisted the 50 students with STEM focused activities. The Science Club completed many projects, including rubber band cars, an acids and bases chemistry lab, electromagnets, a mathematics escape room, Sphero engineering, bottle rockets and simple circuit Art Bots. Looking forward to the 2018-2019 school year, a 4th and 5th grade Science Club will meet once a month: Oct, Nov, Jan, Feb, Mar, April, May and June.

Eighth grade team members were Drew Dickey, Jake Persons and Nick Woods. Seventh grade competitors Josh Blish, Lucas Flett and Alli Hendricks took first place ribbons in Solve That Problem. Accompanying the Pentagames Mathletes were timer Tristan Klascius and teacher Mrs. Stuckart.
The St. Mary Campus celebrated the annual Crowning of Mary and Grandparents’ Day on May 3. The day began with the procession to our Mary Garden to present the flowers students and grandparents brought for Mary. Then, we continued to the church for Mass. After the homily, the May Court honored Mary and crowned her with a beautiful rose crown. We are very thankful for the opportunity to share this special day with our supportive grandparents and families. They visited classrooms and then were entertained with a concert and invited to share refreshments. This long standing tradition is special to our students, staff and families. Congratulations to the following students who were selected to represent their classrooms as May Court members: PreK.............. Charlotte Hernandez and Keaton Roberts K...................... Sports Recap
St. Mary Baseball
Calling the 2018 baseball season at St. Mary a rebuilding year would be a bit of an understatement. With this being our first year with a team in a couple years, numbers were slim. In order to field a team, five 6th graders played in a 7th and 8th grade league. These 6th graders rose to the challenge, and the older boys made great leaders. Our two wins are not at all an accurate reflection of how hard these young men worked. Each and every one of the players I had the joy of coaching learned a lot about baseball, and I have a great feeling about St. Mary baseball next year! - Coach Mensing
St. Mary Track
The 2018 Regis St. Mary Middle School track season came to a close on May 2nd at the district meet at Kennedy High School. All 17 athletes participated in this meet and recorded personal records for the season. Coaches Dru O'Bryant (‘11) and DeAnne Stuckart (‘79) were impressed by their athletes' hard work and positive attitudes. The season ended with a pizza party on May 15th. - Coach Stuckart
Mrs. Debbi Murray Celebrates 40 Years in Catholic Education
Mrs. Debbi Murray started her teaching career at her home Parish of St. Luke’s in Woodburn in the Fall of 1977, after receiving her teaching degree from Oregon College of Education.
Mrs. Murray spent 12 years teaching fourth grade at St. Luke’s and came to Regis St. Mary in Stayton in the Fall of 1989. Over the past 28 years, she has taught first, second and third grades at the St. Mary Campus, including a first-second blend class; this is her eleventh year teaching second grade. “Debbi Murray is the quintessential Catholic school teacher - faithful, committed, excellent. She leads by example and what an incredible example she has been for her entire career. We could not be more blessed to have Debbi at our school all these years,” said principal Rick Schindler. Debbi has been the religion coordinator, participated on accreditation teams, and on interview, curriculum selection and in-depth study committees. Again this year, Mrs. Murray helped organize the All Saints Day and May Crowning Masses. “Catholic education is the most important, and I love that I get to teach it, and not just in religion class, but throughout the day.” Debbi’s favorite part of the job is the instruction and witnessing student progress. An added bonus is teaching children of former students who, as parents, are making the choice for a Catholic education for their families. “I love being in a system where I can watch my students progress over the years and see them as high school seniors. I get to see where they are going, and their successes are heartwarming.” Vice Principal, Jacki Bailey, said, “Debbi Murray is timeless! The passion and energy she puts into her classroom is evident in the faces and the joy of her students. They are eager to learn and meet challenges head on, persevering until they have succeeded. She instills love, confidence and faith in her students that will aid them in their futures. Countless students have been blessed to have been taught by Mrs. Murray, often returning to thank her for her dedication. Teachers, myself included, look to her as an inspiration and a model of an exceptional teacher.” Mrs. Murray plans to finish her career at Regis St. Mary Catholic School. When she decides to retire, Debbi wants to spend more time with her two children and three grandchildren. WWW.REGISSTMARY.ORG •
