As Dorothy once said, "There’s no place like home!" I am extremely honored and thankful for the opportunity to return to Regis St. Mary starting July 1. It was the postcard promise of a faith based education that first brought my family to our school 11 years ago. My husband Jeremy and I will be celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary this summer. We have three children: Fisher (16), Emma (14), and Faith (11). I started my career off as a teacher, and this will be my sixth year as a school administrator. In my spare time, I love to read, re-watch Chef’s Table, and listen to a great homily. I am blessed to work in conjunction with a team of incredible mentors, colleagues, and students. I firmly believe in Catholic education and feel it presents a unique and special opportunity to serve students, build relationships, and partner with the greater community. A Catholic education provides a strong foundation for the development of a lifetime devotion to service and learning and is truly one of the greatest legacies we can offer to our students. I look forward to working with you and your children to help ensure that our students have a successful school year! Sincerely, Candi Hedrick

2 • REGIS ST. MARY NEWSLETTER • SUMMER 2019

I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve the Regis St. Mary community. As a graduate of Regis H.S. and a former teacher of St. Mary, it feels like I'm coming home. I left St. Mary 31 years ago to work for Salem-Keizer Public schools in which I taught 1st and 2nd grade for 10 years. I worked one year as a Professional Development trainer and then spent the next 19 years as an Administrator before retiring. The last two years I have been mentoring new teachers for Cascade School District and supervising student teachers for OSU. Regis St. Mary has a very special place in my heart. My husband of 38 years and our 3 children all graduated from St. Mary and Regis, and years ago, my mother was the principal of St Mary. I am honored and blessed to have the good fortune to spend the next chapter of my career with you. Sincerely, Mimi Pileggi

PreK-12

Letter from the Board of Directors Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends, One of the few perquisites that I enjoy as Chair of the Board of Directors is to stand on the stage at graduation and personally confer diplomas to each graduating senior. On June 9th, I was able to look in eyes of each member of the Class of 2019 and see the emotion there. Frankly, it was a mixed bag — certainly joy and relief, but also anticipation and maybe just a little fear and uncertainty. It caused me to reflect on how we as a board, and the larger “we” as a community, have helped equip these young people for the challenges of college and their lives ahead. Have we done all that we can to ensure that these graduates have the tools to “learn, lead and serve” as they go forward? Have we helped Regis St. Mary become the best possible place to nurture, train and inspire these future leaders? I humbly ask each of you to consider this question and to continue to give generously so that our future graduates will always be people of good character who embody the concept of “learn, lead and serve” as they go out into the world. One of the reasons I am so hopeful for the continuing success of our school is our new leadership team! We are truly blessed to have Candi Hedrick and Mimi Pileggi as our new principal and vice-principal for next school year. Both of these highly skilled and professional educators have long-standing ties to the Regis St. Mary community and come to us with very impressive credentials and experience. I have no doubt that this team will take our school to the next level. I am truly excited about the great things that lie ahead and I hope you are too. We are also looking forward to some change on our own board of directors. This summer we hope to nominate two new board members for terms beginning in the new school year. If you or anyone you know is interested in serving as a board member, please download a nomination form from the BOD page on the school website. We will consider all nominations this summer and select the two bestqualified people to recommend to the Archbishop for appointment this fall. Finally, I would personally like to thank our outgoing principal, Rick Schindler, for all of the good things he has done in the 13 years that he has served

Counselor's CORNER Regis St. Mary Family, At the end of a school year, students, parents and staff often reflect on the highlights, the best stand out moments from the year. While things like winning games, breaking personal records, and academic successes are truly noteworthy (and we have many), there’s something else that stands out regardless of grade or role within Regis St. Mary, the relationships built with one another. Whether reminiscing with the graduates of both St. Mary Campus and Regis Campus, sitting around a table with teachers and staff or mingling with parents and alumni at a retirement party, the conversations swirl around moments spent with another and the relationships built over the years at Regis St. Mary. Conversations while walking alongside Mrs. Miotke at Opal Creek, the handmade notecards and meaningful reflections from Mrs. Razmus, bus rides together to and from sporting events and retreats, heart to heart conversations in the counseling office to the light hearted moments and laughter pouring from Mr. Schmidlkofer and Mr. McGrew’s classrooms, this is what makes Regis St. Mary special and unique. These hallways and walls and fields and courts are filled with those moments. They are the moments that are so intricately woven into the everyday fabric of being a Regis St. Mary Ram. Regis St. Mary is truly family. Selena Schumacher, Regis St. Mary Counselor

In 2005, the Regis Foundation Board approved the establishment of the Hal Rickman Memorial Scholarship Fund. Hal Rickman invested 21 years at Regis High School. During his tenure, he served as teacher, vice-principal, coach and business manager, among many other roles, but he especially enjoyed teaching freshman English, and truly appreciated the students who came from the 8th grade prepared for their high school years. This Fund is part of Hal’s legacy, and is created as a lasting testimony to what he valued during his lifetime.

WELCOME New Faculty and Staff

Ms. Kelly Herrera, Middle School ELA

“I am originally from the Midwest, but l moved to Oregon this past June to be closer to family and explore this great state.

Returning to school after my two daughters were in their early teens, I earned my Middle School Language Arts teaching degree in 2005 from Park University in Kansas City, Missouri. I love teaching all facets of reading and writing skills to young adolescents because this is such an important and exciting time in a child’s life. I appreciate the joy and sheer energy that students in their middle school years bring to the classroom. My experience as an educator has always been in a Catholic school environment because I believe our religious beliefs prepare children for the future by providing them with a Christian foundation that will allow them to keep their faith present in their lives.”

Mrs. Kizzy Starbuck, Half Day PreK

Mrs. Starbuck has been a PreK instructional aide for many years at the St. Mary Campus. She looks forward to building relationships with her students and their families.

Alexandra Lettiere, First Grade

Alexandra Lettiere graduated with a Masters in Teaching and a Special Education Endorsement from Concordia University in 2011. She has been teaching at a Catholic school in the Portland area, but is excited to make the return to Stayton where she grew up. Alexandra has a passion for teaching and loves getting children excited about learning.

Mr. Evan Tait, Music

Evan Tait is thrilled to be a part of the Regis St. Mary staff. He has been a singer/actor in and around the state of Oregon since he was a young boy and has a BA from Portland State University in Theatre Arts Performance and Education. When he is not teaching, he volunteers as a social media manager for a theatre company in Portland, and enjoys being on stage. Evan is incredibly excited to share his love of music, performance and teaching with the St. Mary Campus students and supportive faculty.

I have been a teacher and instructional coach for the Salem-Keizer School District for the past 5 years and a teacher for the Lebanon School District for 2 years before that. My teaching philosophy is to promote critical thinking, leadership and stewardship for others. Junior Encounter

This past April, our ICPE Missionaries, with the help of three young seminarians from Mt. Angel Seminary and Mr. Ken Adams, had the privilege of leading the Regis St. Mary boys junior encounter retreat weekend. Over the past years I have led many retreats, but this weekend with the Regis St. Mary juniors was a special time, as we dug deep into our faith and relationship with Jesus Christ, bonded deeper in our relationships with one another and created great memories. The retreat had a general theme of "Building a Solid Foundation in Christ". We encouraged the boys to examine where they are at in their personal faith journey, with the hope that they would make choices to go deeper. Rarely have I seen such a together bunch of juniors, who genuinely care about each other and strive to make sure no one is left out. The boys prayed hard and played even harder. They laughed together, cried together and made an incredible journey into the deep (Duc Altum). Throughout the weekend, we learned how much God loves and cares for us, and that even though we very often make choices that do not give us life, we have a Father who is full of mercy, forgiveness and

healing, ready to restore the broken panes of our lives whenever we return back to him. We are called to rise up as young men, to become the people that God has ordained us to be, and it is our hope that these young men left the retreat time closer to God, closer to each other and freer in Spirit, knowing they are loved and that God has a mighty plan for each of their lives. This was not the regular encounter retreat program we normally do, but equally, these were not your standard class of juniors. They are an incredible class with an amazing future in front of them. We all left completely exhausted at the end of the retreat, but with deep satisfaction and joy having witnessed an incredible miracle of God in our midst and in the lives of each and everyone one of these fine young men. Looking forward to next year. -Mark Dol “The Junior Encounter not only helped strengthen my relationship with God, but with the rest of the girls in my class as well. I loved being able to talk to those who I don't normally talk to everyday, and I was able to form closer relationships with them. I enjoyed going to Mass at the local church because I felt like I could really connect with God in ways that I couldn't back home. One of my favorite parts of the Junior Encounter was being able to pray with the girls and our chaperones together because I really felt loved by everyone. It will honestly be an experience I will never forget.” -Girls’ Junior Encounter Participant “The Junior encounter was an amazing experience that gave me the opportunity to grow closer to my fellow classmates as well as the Lord. The seminarians and the retreat staff made every moment incredible and engaging for everyone, and the food was amazing. I was greatly impacted by the service of reconciliation and Mass, and became much more conscious of my relationship with Jesus.” -Boys’ Junior Encounter Participant

RAMS GOLF

RSM Freshman Drew Dickey finished 15th (out of 63) in the 1A/2A/3A Boys' State Golf Tournament. He was the highest finishing freshman!

The 2019 Baseball season was definitely a memorable one. We had a great turnout in numbers with 18 players which allowed us to play some junior varsity games. Many first time players graced the roster, and the strides they made from start to finish were impressive. Our season highlights included a 20-7 record with state quarterfinals appearance, a top 8 state ranking, and seven all-league award winners. The team had many great memories from this season all the way from building a new outfield fence to our spring break trip to California. There was amazing support for the Rams baseball program and as head coach, I am very delighted in the direction we are headed. Go Rams! - Coach Kyle Baker

After two years of working at Bishop Ireton High School in Northern Virginia, she joined the University of Portland's PACE program, through which she taught at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Gervais and Blanchet Catholic School in Salem during the 2018-19 school year. Kelly's interest in math extends to abstract mathematics, proof-writing and mathematical history, all of which she hopes to infuse into her teaching. She loves to read, cook and enjoy the outdoors.

PACE Teacher Ms. Betsy Rivera, Health & Wellness, Anatomy & Physiology

Ms. Rivera grew up in Portland and recently graduated from University of Oregon with a degree Human Physiology. She joins the PACE program at the University of Portland and will begin work on her Masters degree in Education this Summer. Betsy enjoys cooking her traditional Mexican food, exploring new places for hiking, and is looking forward to getting to know everyone and working with the amazing people at Regis St. Mary! The 2019 Softball season started slow both with the weather and on the diamond, but finished strong with a late season push that fell just one spot short of the playoffs. The snowy, then rainy weather held up games, but not batting practice with girls working hard in the cage. The hard work paid off at the plate, scoring an average 12 runs per game for the season and finishing the year with six wins and five losses over the last 11 games. The Rams were paced by Alicen Ditter who led the team in batting average, followed closely by Emily Schumacher and Avari Schumacher. In the circle, Sara Vetter and Brooklyn Cross split duties all season. With no varsity pitching experience, they worked hard in practice and games to improve their craft and were much improved by seasons end. Defensively, the team was led by our only senior, Belen Martinez, who played shortstop and will be difficult to replace next year.
