There were only 478 casualties reported by the government in the San Francisco Earthquakedeaths were reported; the number of deaths was not realistic because of the fear of hurting real estate prices and efforts to rebuild the city. Today the experts are saying that the number of deaths in San Francisco Earthquake was from 3000, to 6,000. Half of the population moved to Oakland. People were staying in tents in the area of Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, the Panhandle, and the beaches among Ingleside and North Beach. The San Francisco Earthquake left a lot of damage to San Francisco that was the ninth largest city in the States and the largest in the West Coast. The population reached 410000 people. Over 80% of the city was destroyed by the earthquake and fire. Because of the Earthquake fear a lot of population moved to Los Angeles area. The San Francisco Earthquake damage was estimated to be $400 million USD The Army helped in rescuing San Francisco. The fire department did not have enough people to help so the Army was ordered to help. The soldiers were patrolling the streets, guarding the buildings such as county jail, post office, banks. With dynamite they demolish the buildings in the path of the fires. The army in San Francisco also supervise the food division, clothing, sheltering to newly homeless people The San Francisco Earthquake foreshock preceded the mainshock by about 20 to 25 seconds. The strong shaking lasted about 60 seconds. The shaking intensity as described on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale reached VIII in San Francisco area and up to IX in the area up to cost like Santa Rosa that was almost destroyed. The fires that were out of the control after the San Francisco Earthquake were much more disastrous than earthquake itself. It was estimated that the fires were responsible for the 90 % of the damage resulting from the earthquake. Fires started in many parts of town. Other fires were the results of the camping fires from refugees. They lasted for 4 whole days. As a result of earthquake, the water mains were broken and the fire department had less and less


water supplies against the fast spreading fire. The fire destroyed 500 city blocks in San Francisco.
