The army in San Francisco also supervise the food division, clothing, sheltering to newly homeless people The San Francisco Earthquake foreshock preceded the mainshock by about 20 to 25 seconds. The strong shaking lasted about 60 seconds. The shaking intensity as described on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale reached VIII in San Francisco area and up to IX in the area up to cost like Santa Rosa that was almost destroyed. The fires that were out of the control after the San Francisco Earthquake were much more disastrous than earthquake itself. It was estimated that the fires were responsible for the 90 % of the damage resulting from the earthquake. Fires started in many parts of town.
