Tornadoes can hit without any notice, even though scientists are constantly doing research into how to predict them more accurately. Most of the time the media can issue a tornado watch but it is not until the tornado touches the ground somewhere that the warning is issued. This can be extremely damaging to the place that the tornado did touch. It makes tornado preparedness more important for every family during tornado season and there are a few tornado safety tips that you should follow. Whenever your move home, find yourself in a new workplace or school, you should locate the closes tornado shelter for you. Some homes are now built with a tornado shelter in the garden and some have deep enough basements to stay in when there is a tornado in the area. You should find the shelters when there is no risk of tornadoes so that you have time to think clearly. If there is no shelter available, you should designate a tornado safe room, preferably the bathroom. You should also put a disaster plan in place to help with maximum tornado protection. This plan should be explained to everybody in the family and it is important to constantly check that your family know what they should do. Have a few dry runs when it is safe and set certain tasks to each person, that way you know that nothing is forgotten about. You should always ensure that your tornado insurance is up to date. It may cost a lot and you may not always need it, but it could be the difference between being able to rebuild your home and needing to take out a bank loan to fix the damages. You should also look at what the insurance will cover as tornadoes also come with thunderstorms and high levels of rain. If your house floods due to the rain, you may need to take out flooding insurance too because the tornado insurance may not cover it. You should have a kit bag ready to take with you when a tornado strikes or have supplies in your shelter or basement. These supplies should be changes of clothes and canned and nonperishable foods so that you can survive for the days that you have no power and food supplies in the city are low. You should also have a small box that you can keep all your important documents in, such as passports and birth certificates. While they are not essential for every day activities, they will be detrimental to starting up a new life. The best way to handle a tornado is to have a sufficient level of tornado preparedness. You should continually watch for any tornado watches or warnings on the news and know what to look out for to predict if a tornado will hit. If you start to see green or orange clouds and hear a loud roar in the clouds, get ready for a tornado warning to pop up on the television and move to the shelter.
