For most people, Spring brings an end to the extremes of mother nature, but to others, it means that it is only beginning. The moist, warm air of Spring is prime fodder for tornadoes, which occur more frequently in the United States than anywhere else on Earth. The recent activity in what is known as "Tornado Alley" has brought many to wonder at the destructive force of tornadoes. So far, 100 homes and 40 businesses have been destroyed in Oklahoma, with upwards of 130 homes damaged. Damage is estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars. However, not all tornadoes are as destructive as the ones wreaking havoc this Spring. Approximately 69% of all tornadoes are weak ones, with winds not exceeding 110 mph and contributing to less than 5% of tornado-related deaths. The most violent tornadoes account for only 2% of all tornadoes, but contribute to 70% of all tornado deaths with the lifetime of the storm lasting over 1 hour. Tornadoes are birthed and fed by a combination of hot air rising and cold air falling, often during the early stages of rapidly developing thunderstorms. But no matter how powerful a tornado may be, has an inevitable end. Tornadoes enter a dissipating stage when cold air wraps around the rotating system, cutting off the supply of warm air. As with anything that inspires so much awe and fear in the human heart, there are many myths surrounding tornadoes, and knowing the facts about these myths can save your life if you are ever faced with being in the path of a twister. Here are a few of the more prevalent tornado myths: If you are indoors while a tornado is advancing, you should open windows to equalize air pressure and minimize damage. In reality, open windows make being indoors more dangerous. If the tornado does pass over you, it is likely the windows will be opened by the storm anyway, and you are better off getting yourself to a windowless room, rather than trying to open all the windows. If you are driving a car when a tornado comes barreling down the road, get out of your car and get yourself to an overpass for shelter. Under an overpass, wind currents intensify, which increased your risk of injury or death by flying debris. Tornadoes never hit ground at the same place twice. Like lightening, tornadoes can (and do!) strike several times in the same place. The southwest corner of a building is the safest place to be during a tornado. Since many tornadoes approach from the Southwest, it is reasonable to see why this is an old theory. Instead, get away from all outside walls.

If you live in a mobile home, it is safer to get in your car. Since neither a mobile home nor a car is a safe location during a tornado, it is best if you get yourself to an appropriate shelter if at all possible. Doppler radar can see all tornadoes. As advanced as our technology is, Doppler cannot see all tornadoes, particularly small ones. Tornado chasing is safe. No, no, and no. Tornadoes are very unpredictable and can change course at any time, boomeranging around right back at you. Tornado season has just begun. By knowing the facts of the most common tornado myths and keeping up to date with the latest weather developments on news and weather stations on your cable TV, you increase your chances of surviving the storm relatively unscathed.
