You tell us – it’s your area, it’s your news...
Pupils from Crabtree School get creative in a bid to improve their community Two Police Officers and a City Council Officer came to talk to us in class about respecting our neighbourhood. We talked about littering, noise and anti-social behaviour. We then created some posters asking people to take care of their neighbourhood, and the winning four posters will be put up around the community on lamp posts. All the class tried hard to win the competition. We tried our hardest to make them bright and colourful and eye catching. Hopefully people will do what they say and not drop litter and cigarettes on the floor. We really enjoyed the project. By Shanay Leonardi, Ashley Gough and Luke Ashmore all aged 10 PC Leah Howard said, “The kids were brilliant, they put lots of thought into how the area could be made a nicer place to live by them taking better care of each other, their neighbours, and the environment.”
Rise Park Action Group Plant For Spring One day back in November, when the rain had decided to stop for a while, members of the Rise Park Action Group planted 10,000 crocus and daffodil bulbs in the grass verges along Bestwood Park Drive, and around the shopping precinct. This massive undertaking was completed with assistance from members of the
Crabtree School competition winning entries
Rise Park Community Centre, children from Rise Park Primary School and Top Valley School and members of Entry 2 Employment. We also cleared out the planters in the precinct and refilled with Spring flowering plants. Many thanks go to the Council gardeners who were so very helpful throughout. We look forward to a colourful Spring and full recovery of my aching bones! By Paul Bakajsa, Chairman, Rise Park Action Group

Martial Arts Competition raises funds for Hospice Martial Arts Children's Charity Competition held its first charity event on the 4th October 2009 at the Southglade Leisure Centre, in aid of the Rainbows Hospice. The event was opened by the Lord Mayor Cllr Jeannie Packer who was led into the venue by a Chinese Lion Dance troupe. There were various competitions throughout the day, including fancy dress for the younger ones. The event raised an amazing £1081.41p, all of which was donated to Rainbows Hospice (MACCC), the fund raising wing of Mantis New Generation Nottingham. MNGN over the years has raised over £10,000 for local charities. From 2010 onwards MACCC has decided to concentrate it's efforts in to raising funds for the Children's Ward at the Nottingham City Hospital. Presenting the cheque

Making your neighbourhood bloom Do you fancy brightening up your neighbourhood this summer? Last year 80 communities joined Nottingham in Bloom's campaign to encourage small, resident-led communities to achieve long-term improvements through horticultural, environmental and cleanliness initiatives. This year, it's hoped that even more will join in. Participants in 2009 included Riseborough Community Group with their small courtyard garden; Rufford Tenants' and Residents' Association with many planting and litter picking initiatives; young people from the Catch 22 Junior Youth Inclusion Programme
who worked on a garden at Springfield Home, and a rooftop garden created at Lathkill Community Home by volunteers from CRESTA. Benefits include building pride in the area and community spirit, as well as cleaner and greener surroundings for a healthier community. To find out more about getting involved, and having your efforts recognised through the Royal Horticultural Society's new 'It's Your Neighbourhood' Award scheme, contact Nottingham in Bloom on 0115 915 2745 or email bloom@nottinghamcity.gov.uk www.mynottingham.gov.uk/bloom

Hundreds of jobs coming to Bulwell
A new Tesco store is going be built in the centre of Bulwell and will create 460 new jobs. Many of the jobs will go to Bulwell people, thanks to an initiative between the City
Council and Tesco called the Bulwell Employment Partnership. The scheme will help promote training and job opportunities in the store for local people, and in particular to recruit the long term unemployed and those getting job-seekers allowance. Tesco will be located on Main Street, and they will encourage their contractor to build the store using the Bulwell
Employment Partnership to recruit local labourers, apprentices and sub-contractors. Cllr Alan, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Regeneration, said; “The new store will create hundreds of jobs and we will work with Tesco through the employment partnership to get people from Bulwell to work at the store as well as receiving training and development opportunities”.
Decade of Investment Already three months into the New Year, it's hard to believe that we're also three months into a whole new decade in Nottingham. So, let's take a look back at the first 10 years of the new millennium and see how 10 years of investment in our local area has made a difference.
£55m for local schools Over £55m has been or is being invested in local primary and secondary schools, including over £26m for the new Bulwell Academy, opening its doors ready for the new school year this September. This money has been invested by the Government, by Nottingham City Council and by academy sponsors, and represents the largest government investment in schools for over 50 years.
£22.5m bringing local services together in Bulwell Work on the new Bulwell Joint Service Centre will soon be underway thanks to an investment of over £22m. The centre will bring together local services including: housing, Bulwell Library, local GP practices, local health services, and local Council services. The new centre will be open next year.
£2m for your new leisure centre The Council's £32m scheme to transform the city's council owned leisure centres includes over £2m to
develop the Ken Martin Leisure Centre in Bulwell. The centre now boasts a superb health suite with sauna and steam room, modern changing facilities, swimming pool viewing area including children's section, a refurbished swimming pool hall, and a fantastic fitness studio and activity room. On top of this, millions of pounds have helped bring the tram to Bulwell, creating new public transport routes into the city. All this in the last 10 years.

Councillor Ginny Klein Tel: 0115 927 3415
Councillors Eileen Heppell, John Hartshorne and Ginny Klein have continued with their series of ward walks accompanying the Neighborhood Action Officer and a member of City Services and Nottingham City Homes when appropriate. So far the inspections have covered Bulwell Hall Estate, Sandhurst Road, Crabtree Estate, most of Snapewood, and the Cinderhill road area. Working with the neighbourhood team enables the Councillors to discuss the different issues for different areas. Ginny Klein says: “It highlights problematic areas where there is graffiti and fly tipping, the walks allow for the councillors to meet with local residents and to hear their views.” Change for Bulwell remains significant, the Bulwell Health Centre is now demolished and its services moved into temporary premises on Hempshill Vale. The building of the Academy is well

on the way and work will begin soon on the children's play park next to the toy library on Bulwell Hall Park. It has been agreed that the old depot on Lillington Street can be demolished to make way for 8 new build council houses which will offer a larger unit for a family with a disabled member. The funding was obtained from the Homes and Communities Agency and the bid was in competition with many other Authorities. All three of your local councilors supported the opportunity to have some more housing on vacant land. The old depot has stood empty for some time now and attracts much litter which becomes trapped in the fencing so it will be good to see it go.
Councillor surgeries are an opportunity for you to speak to any of your local councillors should you have any issues about your area you wish to discuss. Times, dates and venues of surgeries in your ward are listed here.

Bulwell Forest
Councillor Alan Clark Tel: 0115 915 5667
Alan and Eunice have been engaging with local people in Bulwell Forest over the last few months. They joined a planting day with community reps in Top Valley (see picture) when several thousand bulbs were planted. They are looking forward to seeing the results of their hard work all along the grass verges on Ridgeway over the coming weeks. Both summer and winter planting have made a great impact in the community on Highbury Road, on Bestwood Park Drive and on Top Valley. At the same time, Alan and Eunice have been busy talking to local people about early ideas for the major refurbishment and rebuild of Top Valley School. This will give us not only a learning institution with facilities designed for the twenty-first century, but it will give the school the chance to be a real community school. Alan and Eunice also attend regular meetings with the local Police Beat Managers (Paul and Katie) and local community and church groups within their beats. They feed in their observations and concerns from their regular ward walks.
Councillor Eunice Campbell Tel: 0115 915 5675
