Learning comes to life In December, a number of local children from Radford Primary had the fantastic opportunity to go on a trip to London. Councillors from Radford and Park wanted to support local school children to raise their aspirations through an opportunity that not all may experience.
The trip included sightseeing many areas of our capital including, the Tower of London, Houses of Parliament, Downing Street, and of course Buckingham Palace. One of the highlights was a visit to the Natural History Museum. It brought learning to life and the children were encouraged to explore and interact with the many learning games on offer. They put into practice the theoretical work they were doing at school on Victorians and Tudors. Since returning, the trip has had a positive impact, they have become more independent and feel more confident in making their own choices. Here is a quote from Lewis in Year 5: “We went past Big Ben and it was fantastic. We went to Buckingham Palace
and before that we went to Downing Street, that's where the Prime Minister lives.” Many parents and carers have congratulated the school and local councillors; they were so pleased that their children have had the opportunity to see the capital and the history of London.

‘Parent Power’ in Hyson Green In 2008, Nottingham Development Company ran the Peoples Choice programme. By January 2009, The Vine Community Centre's 'Parent Power' won the funding and started offering free classes with crèche facilities to local parents, who wetre able to gain skills and experience in many fields such as; hairdressing, sewing, world cooking, beauty and many more. There were also one-off
workshops such as 'Craft and Questions' and 'Parentline Plus', which gave parenting advice in a fun environment. Over the summer, they held two 'women's treat days' for women to pamper themselves over the school holidays. For more information contact the Vine Community Centre on (0115) 924 9700 and ask for Jane Pigford.
Can takeaways be healthier? On 27th October 2009, a free training session took place for chefs from local takeaways, organised by Neighbourhood Management’s Health Action Officer and the Community Nutrition and Dietetic Service, as a response to the growing concern on obesity levels amongst children and adults. The aim of the session was to offer advice and practical tips to chefs from takeaway outlets on how to prepare takeaway meals more healthily, by reducing the amounts of fat, sugar and salt they use, whilst still retaining their enjoyable taste. They were also encouraged to consider using more vegetables and fruit in their dishes. Eight chefs and kitchen staff attended and found it be useful and informative. Another session is planned in February with the possibility of rolling the programme out across the city in the future.

Making your neighbourhood bloom Do you fancy brightening up your neighbourhood this summer? Last year 80 communities joined Nottingham in Bloom's campaign to encourage small, resident-led communities to achieve long-term improvements through horticultural, environmental and cleanliness initiatives. This year, it's hoped that even more will join in. Participants in 2009 included 12 groups in the Arboretum, Berridge, Radford and Park area, such as the hanging basket project run by Forest Fields Improvement Association. Tuntum Housing Association also got involved, with tenants getting together to plant hanging baskets and pots. Hyson Green Traders' Association created glorious
floral displays with the help of local groups who took part in the planting. It can be a great way to get to know your neighbours better, as well as cleaner and greener surroundings for a healthier community. To find out more about getting ‘The Forest Fields Gang' involved, and having your efforts Nottingham in Bloom on 0115 915 2745 recognised through the Royal or email bloom@nottinghamcity.gov.uk Horticultural Society's new 'It's Your www.mynottingham.gov.uk/bloom Neighbourhood' Award scheme, contact

Transforming Nottingham’s Neighbourhoods is Nottingham's first dedicated cultural facility for Black contemporary arts, receiving £5m in 2006 to invest in the development of the eye-catching building on Gregory Boulevard.
Decade of Investment Already three months into the New Year, it's hard to believe that we're also three months into a whole new decade in Nottingham. So, let's take a look back at the first 10 years of the new millennium and see how 10 years of investment in our local area has made a difference.
£5m for new arts centre The New Art Exchange is a fantastic new arts and community facility for the city, based in Hyson Green. The centre
£14m bringing services together in your area The new £14m Mary Potter Centre in Hyson Green has been recognised nationally for its world class design, and for how it has improved the delivery of services in the area. It opened in 2008 with GP surgeries, NHS health clinics, Nottingham City Council Adult Social Care and Children's Services, the Acorn Resource Centre and a SureStart
Children's Centre, along with Nottingham City Homes Housing Office and the City Council's Neighbourhood Management team.
Creating first rate facilities for young people Two new play areas, new multi sport area, football pitches, bowling greens, and a number of designated leisure walks, help make the Forest Recreation Ground one of the city's flagship green spaces. £435K was invested in creating a state of the art adventure playground and outdoor gym which opened last year.
Radford Neighbourhood Plan Consultation Nottingham City Council is working on a regeneration plan for parts of Radford and Hyson green over the next 15-20 years called the Radford Neighbourhood Plan. In order for the plan to reflect the aspirations of local people, initial consultation sessions took place from October to December 2009.
Five key priorities emerged: 1. Encourage development of vacant sites including Radford Mill and Forest Mill 2. Improve public/green spaces and ensure they are overlooked and are well maintained 3. Improve homes to meet Decent Homes standards 4. Improve the appearance of streets, pavements and pedestrian crossings
5. Introduce more family housing (Social and owner occupied) both through the development of and possible redevelopment of existing homes. Let us know what you think by filling in our questionnaire at: www.mynottingham.gov.uk/radfordsurvey For more information contact Fran Cropper, Neighbourhood Regeneration Officer on 915 5394 or fran.cropper@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

in different households who want to support the event. Also tell them what sort of event you would like to hold. They may even be able to help provide bulbs, tools or other things to help get your day off to a good start. They will make recommendations for the best 5 events during February and should let you know before mid March. Globe Pub Your Councillors have been supported in a meeting with Debbie Fenton, the Neighbourhood Action Officer for the area when a number of other council staff and police were invited to discuss what can be done about the derelict pub on Norton Street. It has planning permission for apartments, which are unlikely to ever be built. It is a magnet for dumping and they want the owner of the land to be more
responsible with the building and the land. They are hoping to encourage demolition of the site as a first site. There are only very few council powers to get this site sorted, so they really need to work with the owner based in London. If any residents have a view about this building, please let them know. Schools Funded to go to London Katrina Bull, Mohammad Afzal have recently recommended funding for one class from Radford Primary and one from Mellers Primary school to go to London for an overnight stay. They felt that many children in Radford might not get the opportunity to visit London normally and get to museums or the theatre down there. Hopefully the wonderful memories of their trip will stay with them forever.

Councillor Carole-Ann Jones Tel: 07943 829 572 New Basford. Funding came from Pathfinder, Nottingham City Council Area Capital Fund and WRENN. The old park was not being used due to Safety concerns and the facility was badly needed in the area. Consultations took place with local schools and residents in the planning stages and is hoped that when work is completed (hopefully by the Spring), that children in the area will enjoy these new facilities.
Arboretum Councillor Merlita Bryan Tel: 07943 829 569 Not In My Neighbourhood Week This mini week of action took place during the first week of November last year. The Arboretum ward was identified as a key area to have this targeted action by local Councillors, the Crime and Drugs partnership, The Police, and local residents. A small geographical area was identified for action: Bentinck Road; Birkin Avenue; Radford Road; and all side streets down Gregory Boulevard. Arboretum Councillor Merlita Bryan wanted to give some feedback on the activities that took place: • The Crime Reduction Team ran a stall at The Mary Potter Centre in order to raise public awareness of their service • Smart Water, the anti-theft measure, delivered to over 30 homes during the week
• Community Police Officers made sure bins were taken off the street • Alleys were cleared and litter picked by City Services • The Dog Warden worked hard to reduce mess locally • The Community Pay Back Scheme painted and filled the planters at Bentinck School • Street Drinking was strictly enforced in the Alcohol Free Zone, whilst a number of shops were visited on Radford Road by the police to stop the sale of alcohol to drunk individuals Thanks must go to Neighbourhood Action Officer Linda Wright who ensured that key resident groups in the area, voluntary groups and Bentinck School were aware of the activities that were being provided for the week to allow them to participate. Merlita thinks that this week showed how much can be achieved when local residents, the City Council, The Police and other groups work together.
Councillor Tony Marshall Tel: 0115 948 2073 Councillor Marshall has been keeping an eye on fly-tipping, especially in shoppers' car parks in the Hyson Green area. Once reported, the Council manages to clear them, but a few days later he finds that someone else has dumped their rubbish there. Councillor Marshall knows that this is frustrating, and he urges residents to contact him at his regular surgeries if they spot any fly-tipping in their neighbourhoods. He is keen to tackle this problem with residents in an effort to improve the state of the City.
