Sneinton Hermitage Community Centre Gets a Makeover! By Salma Hussain Work has just finished on the refurbishment of the Sneinton Hermitage Community Centre inside and out! Including improved disabled access with a stair lift, accessible toilets, energy efficient lighting, a brand new kitchen and outdoor social play area to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers. Our volunteer reporter Salma Hussain spoke to board members and members of the public who use the community centre. It was highlighted how they were all pleased with the 'new look centre', and with the improvements made
especially to the toilet areas. All the improvements have given the community centre a new lease of Garden before life with increased usage and uplifted community spirit. The Saturday cafe in particular is very popular. The Community Association has been working really hard; they are grateful to funding bodies Children's Services, City Council DDA Capital, ERDF ACCESSible Centres Fund, WREN and 02.

those who commit crime and flout their ASBOs. As points are totted up on a driving licence, enough complaints against someone with an ASBO will result in a Court appearance and a possible custodial sentence.
Keith is determined to reduce the level of anti-social behaviour in the area, but to get these results he needs your co-operation.
Keith said: “We want to make sure everyone feels safe, wherever they live, and that St Ann's and Sneinton continue to be a place where people want to live, work and visit.”
Working with Licensing, Keith has already started dealing with areas in Sneinton where under-age drinkers were making life miserable for people living near the Hermitage Public House, resulting in the closure of the premises. He plans to increase the pressure on

Meet the Joint Service Centre Artist The decoration of the new Joint Service Centre in St Ann's is in the hands of Kathryn Hodgkinson, a lady with a string of famous art installations to her credit. Originally from Gloucester, following her course at Sunderland University she made her home in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
‘The Place' — A snapshot of Kathryn Hodgkinson’s work
Her first love was ceramics but soon after she started her course she became beguiled by glass. However she has also used bronze, concrete, light and sound. The material she chooses is to some extent dependant on where it is to be and what it is for, decorative, functional, or a mixture of both. When I spoke to Kathryn she explained that she wants to learn and 'feel' as much as she can about the area and the people who live here. After meeting some of the locals she is already aware that there is a strong desire for trees and/or plants and that we are keen on our environment. Her brief is to create a strategy for the area, to suggest and propose what would be best; local artists will be brought in to fulfil
the 'grand plan' and the results should be stunning. Kathryn is keen to receive any ideas people may have. and hear from fellow artists, and would welcome emails at studio@HodgekinsonGlass.co.uk The Joint Services Centre is the first phase of the proposed Master plan redevelopment of Robin Hood Chase. In this issue you will find a Survey outlining the services that will be available; we would love to hear your views on the Joint Service Centre & Master plan. Please take 10 minutes to complete the survey and return it FREEPOST to the address on the form. By Rosemary Pickering
New Revs on the Chase Recently St. Ann's saw the arrival of two new Church Ministers, Karen Rooms at St. Ann with Emmanuel, and Ingrid Shelley at Chasewood Baptist Church. Both were living and working in Nottingham previously and are thrilled to have a chance to work in such a diverse, vibrant and interesting community as St. Ann's. Karen has worked in business, including a stint at Boots, spent seven years working in East Africa, and has
experience of working in citizen's advice. Ingrid is a former youth worker, foster carer for Nottingham City Council, and voluntary counsellor for Childline. Both churches have diverse congregations and are looking for ways to further serve the community and enable people to explore and grow in their faith and spirituality (both inside and outside the church). If you see them around say hello - they'd be happy to chat!

Making your neighbourhood bloom Do you fancy brightening up your neighbourhood this summer? Last year 80 communities joined Nottingham in Bloom's campaign to encourage small, resident-led communities to achieve long-term improvements through horticultural, environmental and cleanliness initiatives. This year, it's hoped that even more will join in.
salad and flowers in baskets and planters, and on Hudson Street, a similar scheme is now spreading to nearby roads too.
Participants in 2009 included nine groups from St Ann's and The Dales, such as Chase Tenants' and Residents' Association who created a community garden on Hungerhill Road, with fruit trees, tomatoes and flowerbeds. In Lichfield Road, residents planted herbs,

Benefits include building pride in the area and community spirit, as well as cleaner and greener surroundings for a healthier community.
Victoria Leisure Centre – new facility will emerge after closure As you’re probably aware Victoria Leisure Centre closes on April 1 so that work can start on developing a new, modern facility to open in 2012. The development will be the largest investment made so far from the City Council's Leisure Transformation Programme and will lead to this part of the city having one of the best leisure centres in Nottingham. The new centre will include a six-lane family pool, a separate children's pool and fun splash area, a new cafe, plus a gym and health suite.
The existing clock tower will be kept but the rest of the building will be replaced by an attractive new building. The new Victoria Leisure Centre has been an important catalyst in securing further investment in the area such as the regeneration of Sneinton Square. While the centre is closed customers are advised to use either Portland Leisure Centre on Muskham Street in The Meadows or the new Djanolgly Community Leisure Centre on Gregory Boulevard in Forest Fields. Transforming Nottingham’s Neighbourhoods
Neighbourhood Regeneration in Action Latest Extra Care at Welland Court The new facilities being developed at Welland Court are in a partnership between Nottingham City Council, who successfully bid to the Department of Health (DoH) for £2.9m, and LHAASRA, who bid for a grant of £3m from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).
Decade of Investment Already three months into the New Year, it's hard to believe that we're also three months into a whole new decade in Nottingham. So, let's take a look back at the first 10 years of the new millennium and see how 10 years of investment in our local area has made a difference.
£1.9m to transform Sneinton Square The transformation of Sneinton Square into a bustling, attractive outdoor space
All the residents at Welland Court have been relocated to alternative accommodation and demolition of the complex is now complete. The new complex will consist of 71 two bedroom apartments, community facilities, and a day centre for vulnerable adults which will re-provide for the outdated Nuffield House Day Centre.
There will be 35 care packages in total available with the rest of the apartments allocated to residents with no care needs.
for shopping, live performances, markets and more is part of a wider project called Connecting Eastside. The £6.8m scheme will transform Sneinton Square, provide high quality pedestrian connections between the city centre and St Ann's and Sneinton, in the Eastside area, as well as improve transport links for cyclists and traffic.
investment. Over £8.5m will be spent re-modelling Rosehill School for Children with special needs and this will open in September 2011.
£69m for local schools A whopping £69m is being invested in local primary and secondary schools in the area, part of the Council’s primary school improvement programme, the Building Schools for the Future project and the Academies programme which altogether is investing around £300m. Schools benefiting in the area include Blubell Hill, Sycamore and St Ann’s Well primary schools. The new Nottingham Academy will be the largest secondary school in Europe and will receive nearly £55m
The community facilities which will be open to the general public will consist of café/restaurant, hairdresser, IT suite and various other flexible meeting spaces.
Joint Service Centre for St Ann’s NHS Nottingham City, Nottingham City Council and Nottingham City Homes are working to develop a new Joint Service Centre in St Ann’s. The new centre will form part of an exciting plan to redevelop the Robin Hood Chase, retail and housing. The new centre will include modern accessible health facilities, a local library, housing services and new facilities for families and young people. The Joint Service Centre has received financial support from Central Government that requires the new building to be open in the Autumn 2011.

Allotments made secure
New roof for Greenway Centre
Park Users wanted
Your local councillors have been pleased to make funds available through the Area Capital Fund to provide new fencing and gates for the Dales Allotments - which run alongside Sneinton Dale. 'It's great that so many people want to grow their own food and making these allotments secure is a good use of these funds' commented Cllr Gul Nawaz Khan.
After several months of buckets catching the leaks, the Greenway Centre is celebrating the completion of a new roof on the Sports hall. The centre, which now runs youth activities for 3 evenings each week, was having to restrict the use of the hall. 'Now' said Cllr Ken Williams, Chair of the Management Committee, 'Our young and older people can enjoy the many facilities on offer and we can put the buckets away!'
Following the installation of security fencing on Parkdale Park, your local councillors are keen to hear the views of regular park users on how they would like the park to be improved further. Please contact Cllr David Mellen if you would like to add your contribution to future plans for this park.
New Windows for Bakersfield Community Centre After successful funding bids, old windows are to be replaced at this busy community centre on Sneinton Dale. Cllr David Mellen, Chair of the management committee at the centre, welcomed the news. 'New windows are much needed and will hopefully mean that the heat will stay in the centre for our users, whilst reducing our fuel bills.'
Barriers on Stanway Close Following consultation of all residents on the Milford Drive Estate in Bakersfield, barriers are to be installed on the alleyway linking Greenside Walk and Stanway Close to see if this will reduce the use of mini motorbikes in the area. These bikes have been causing nuisance for residents for some time and local councillors have responded to the consultation results by agreeing to trial barriers at this location.

St Anns
Councillor Jon Collins Tel: 0115 915 5038
To the residents of St Anns; Councillors, Jon Collins, Dave Liversidge & Sue Johnson would like to advise that they are addressing the issues with trees in St Anns, due to the sheer volume of complaints that have been received. Complaints range from blocked drains and guttering, individuals slipping on leafs, over grown trees, to potential damage to individual's properties. Although it should be a straight forward issue, unfortunately it is not, because the environment is a very sensitive and complex subject. As result, it has been suggested that we start a petition, which must have at least 1000 signatures before anything can change. Councillor Sue Johnson will be taking the lead on this growing concern within the community. The petition has already started but has been temporarily put on hold due to the bad weather. We are in great need of much more support to get this on the move now, and would appreciate any help to get the petitions completed.
Councillor Dave Liversidge Tel: 0115 915 5624
If you would like to support this campaign, please contact Councillor Sue Johnson either at surgery at the local St Anns library on the chase, Wednesday between 6pm-7pm or email for a petition form at sue.johnson@nottinghamcity.gov.uk, alternatively call 07971026907. Please note, only St Anns residents can sign the petition, which includes Windmill Lane and surrounding areas. The petition will also be at most of your local shops on the chase, the Chase Community Centre and the local Gladstone liberal club on Manning Street, near Woodborough Road.
