You tell us – it’s your area, it’s your news...

Meadows Week of Action Once again the Week of Action comes to the Meadows this year running from Monday 22nd March until Friday 26th March 2010. The purpose of this work is for a targeted, sustained course of action by a range of services dealing with issues in the area. This year there will be an increased emphasis on joint working between services and local people, in addressing issues that matter the most. Resident involvement will be a major part of this Week of Action and it is hoped that local people, groups and organisations will take an active part.

The Week of Action enables us all to work towards making our neighbourhoods safer and cleaner through working on issues such as fly tipping, anti-social behaviour, crime, drug related activities, and physical improvements. In order for this years Week of Action to be more of a success then ever we need your support and involvement.

Want to get involved? Need more information? Don't know who to contact? Concerned about an issue that needs sorting? Call your local Neighbourhood Management Team on 0115 915 8320.

Mundella Park Mural Mundella Road Play Park in the Meadows is set to have a mural painted on the factory wall that backs onto the park. Children from local primary and secondary schools submitted their ideas to local residents last year, showing different aspects of the Meadows, and local artists have now turned these into a colourful final

design which should transform the factory wall. There will be interactive elements, scenes representing the seasons, and a water theme to link it to the nearby Victoria Embankment. This is all set to happen over the Easter school break starting on Tuesday 30th March. Please feel free to come along and join in with the project during that time, whether to help out painting, or just to watch and enjoy the fun.

Dunkirk and Old Lenton Gateway Project Helped by residents, students and property developers, children from Dunkirk Primary School kicked off the Dunkirk and Old Lenton Gateway Project when they planted 1,000 daffodil bulbs at the Cherry Tree plot on the corner of Beeston Road and Clifton Boulevard. The Gateway Project is currently securing funds from businesses and the City Council. The project is important because it is one of the major routes into Nottingham and it will give the impression that it is a city that does care

about its appearance. Towards the end of May a number of planters will be erected around Beeston Road. This will improve the area, especially as it will brighten it with flowers and bring residents together working to give pride to their area. It is also planned to enter this scheme in the Nottingham in Bloom 2010 competition in the 'It's Your Neighbourhood' category. For more information contact the Dunkirk and Lenton Partnership Forum on 941 9525.

Participants in 2009 included 18 groups from the Bridge, Dunkirk and Lenton areas. The Meadows is already wellknown for its floral terraced streets enhanced with planters and hanging

Transforming Nottingham’s Neighbourhoods Good value - Carbon friendly heating! As part of Nottingham’s commitment to tackling climate change and to make the City carbon neutral by 2016 the District Heating System is being extended into the Southside Regeneration Zone between the railway station and the Meadows. Nottingham City Council submitted a successful bid for a £1.5m Low Carbon

Infrastructure Fund grant to install a new District Heating Main into the area, which is earmarked for development. This will provide an opportunity for residents and businesses in the area to access this alternative supply of heat, which for a domestic user can save over £200 per year, and is powered by the waste generated in the city area.

The District Heating System in the City is the largest in the country and the extension of the pipework to the Southside opens the opportunity to extend the piping in to other regeneration areas. For further details contact EnviroEnergy on 0115 955 6677.

Decade of Investment Already three months into the New Year, it's hard to believe that we're also three months into a whole new decade in Nottingham. So, let's take a look back at the first 10 years of the new millennium and see how 10 years of investment in our local area has made a difference.

£1.4m for local school As part of the Council’s primary school improvement programme, the Building Schools for the Future project, £1.4m has been invested in Greenfields Primary School, and construction work started in February 2010.

Transforming parks and open spaces Over £645,000 has been spent on transforming the area’s park and open spaces. Dunkirk Park, known locally as ‘Spider’ Park has been invested in,

creating a new play area on site, with work starting in early spring. Over £300,000 has been invested in Queen’s Walk Recreation Ground which has seen new play equipment, bins, benches, paths, sensory garden, wildflower areas and upgrades to the pavilion building. Funding received by Lenton Recreation Ground has seen it achieve the annual Green Flag award for the last 5 years in a row.

Big plans for Victoria Embankment With work due to start in early Spring, Victoria Embankment has received £110,000 of funding as part of a scheme to create a new play area on site. The design will be created alongside local children and will look to provide a play space for all ages and abilities. This project will form part of a larger scheme to regenerate the whole site, incorporating improved flood defences as well as proposals to improve sporting provision on site.

Councillor News

Local News From Your Area Councillors Councillors Your local City Councillors want to improve the quality of life for all residents, and support local people to get involved in making decisions about the things that matter to you. If you have anything you wish to discuss or would like their view on a story you wish to contribute to the Community Arrow, do feel free to get in touch.

Dunkirk & Lenton

Councillor David Trimble Tel: 0115 915 5040

Your local Dunkirk and Lenton Ward Councillors have been backing strong action against landlords who keep breaking rules. They know from their regular surgeries that people locally are fed up with landlords who don't manage their property to ensure the safety of their tenants, who commit 'trade waste' offences and who do not have proper licences. Whilst there are many good landlords with good quality, accredited accommodation there is nothing that unites the existing community and students more than poorly maintained homes. It is not difficult to walk around

Councillor Zahoor Mir Tel: 0115 987 1145

Dunkirk and Lenton and recognise the massive difference between properties that are cared for and looked after and those properties that are most definitely not. The community needs tough action and that's what your Council is delivering. Dunkirk and Lenton Ward Councillors, David Trimble and Zahoor Mir know that local residents are annoyed when poor quality houses in multiple occupation dramatically impact on the environment they live in and the students get a very poor deal when having to pay high rental costs for substandard accommodation.

Question your Council As a City of Nottingham resident you can now play an active role in City Council meetings by voicing your concern about an important council related issue that is affecting your community. You can either submit a Public Question or a Public Petition to full Council meetings. For further details visit www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/ publicquestionsandpetitions or phone 0115 915 4592

Nottingham City Council has excellent working relationships with good landlords through regular meetings of the Landlord Liaison Panel.

Bridge

Councillor Saghir Akhtar Tel: 0115 915 5137

Cllr Akhtar received a petition and photographs from concerned residents in Lamcote Street and Bathley Street in the Meadows, regarding anti-social behaviour. In an effort to combat this behaviour, a range of neighbourhood safety measures have been introduced to address residents’ concerns. Residents also complained to Cllr Akhtar about the poor condition of some pavements. As a result, the Council have now fixed some of the pavements brought to Cllr Akhtar's attention. Please contact Cllr Akhtar if you spot any problems in the Bridge Ward area. She holds surgeries twice a week, and is always happy to answer your phone queries.

Councillor surgeries are an opportunity for you to speak to any of your local councillors should you have any issues about your area you wish to discuss. Times, dates and venues of surgeries in your ward are listed here.

Councillor Ian MacLennan Tel: 0115 974 6122

The future's bright for The Meadows In the last edition we mentioned the exciting news of the £200m of Government PFI Credit that is to be devoted to making the Meadows a great place to live. Bridge Ward Councillor Ian MacLennan understands that residents of the Meadows know how much good work is going on, such as the remarkable success in the Nottingham in Bloom Awards, but also that there is much to do to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour and deprivation.

This new plan will be a leap forward in tackling these problems. The plans are vast and wide ranging and proposals include: • Building new homes • Remodelling in the New Meadows • A new District Centre • Connecting the Meadows • Improvements of the Old Meadows and the Embankment The plan is available on the City Council website, alternatively get in touch with Ian for more information.

Surgeries are held at: Bridge Councillor Ian MacLennan - (Labour) Date: 2nd & 4th Saturday of every month Time: 10.30am - 12pm Location: Meadows Library, Wilford Grove
