You tell us – it’s your area, it’s your news...

Don’t judge a head by its cover! My name is Daniel Burton and I am 13 years old. I have been coming to ‘Sunday Funday’ at Sixways Community Centre from when it started. Ask Pat, when I first came I was a bit of a handful as I suffer from ADHD. Pat’s been working with me and on my 13th Birthday I became a volunteer. I help out with the young ones with the arts and crafts and games and stuff. I like coming to ‘Sunday Funday’ and look forward to it every week.

Aspley’s Miles Better Daniel Burton, Sunday Funday Volunteer

Our Halloween Party, on 27th October at Sixways Community Centre, saw 287 people through the door

I’m Pat Power (Development Worker), and I've been running ‘Sunday Funday’ for 7 months. We have between 50-80 kids on a Sunday between 12.00pm and 3.00pm. We have 8 adult volunteers and 5 young volunteers including Daniel. Daniel used to come on Sundays with his hood up and wouldn’t take it off and didn’t really engage with the others. But we’ve been working together now and he’s turned himself around and is a real asset to the club, and I value all the volunteers. The young people on the estate need a bit of TLC and encouragement. I always say don’t judge a book by its cover, or in the case of the young people, a ‘head by its cover’.

Local resident Pat Ferguson has set up a monthly food market in partnership with the Salvation Army. Pat was concerned that there was limited availability of fresh fruit and vegetables in the Aspley area and as such, talked with the Salvation Army and local food providers, such as the Allotments Association, to donate fruit and vegetables. The monthly market is held on the last Thursday of every month from 10am outside the Salvation Army on Aspley Lane. Along with fresh fruit and vegetables, free range eggs are also available, and the Salvation Army makes a wide range of homemade cakes to buy. Pat is eager for more people to get involved in helping to run the market, so if you are interested in volunteering once a month on a Thursday, please contact Susan Ward-Rice on 915 7665 for further information.

BEST BUILD builds a brighter future At BEST we work with local people to improve their employability skills and help them find work.

construction contracts, of which the work is then passed onto local companies. BEST won the contract from Nottingham City Council to demolish the Pavillion on the Park. By using local lads to volunteer along side the local builders they will get on site experience, training, discipline, and a real chance to prove themselves,

BEST jobs on offer

This is a huge exciting challenge for BEST and for Broxtowe and we've got the bit between our teeth now - we are going to survive this recession. At the end of it we will be stronger and more equipped to grow this local economy with local business and local labour - it makes us proud.

BEST will be creating more than 40 jobs on the estate. The roles include administration, sales, caretaking and childcare. BEST are putting on four jobs fairs. Two have already taken place but the next two dates are 12th January and 15th February 2010.

BEST BUILD is winning small city council

Respect for Bilborough and Strelley

MP which took place on Flamsteed Road. To make Strelley greener 5000 bulbs were planted by the 'Bloomin Strelley' action group.

During the recent Week of Action, the services that were focused on related to a number of issues highlighted as a concern by local residents. These included crime, anti-social behaviour, environmental issues such as fly tipping, and unkempt gardens.

The Week of Action was very successful and the Neighbourhood Management team would like to thank all of those agencies and community members who worked very hard to make it a success.

The recession has hit Broxtowe hard. Small local building firms are not getting contracts and are having to lay off their workers. If we don't do something NOW then Broxtowe will be an employment desert. BEST employs local people, not because we have to, but because they are the best for the job. Local employment is key to beating any economic down turn. So, with a lot of help from Nottingham City Council, Nottingham City Homes and Keep Moat, we set up BEST BUILD.

In an attempt to tackle some of these issues a number of events were organised which included; Bilborough Boxing Club open day, a burglary reduction day, health and well-being advice on the info bus at the Pelican Pub, a football tournament involving local young people and the Police, and a street race opened by Vernon Coaker

Nuthall Road Fencing New fencing along a derelict piece on Nuthall Road has removed an eyesore from thousands of commuters and visitors coming into Nottingham each day. The untidy stretch, close to the Gateway Hotel and on one of the main routes into the city, was highlighted by local Street

Representative Margaret Oaks. Unable to locate the owners of the site, Nottingham City Council made £6,000 available for new fencing. Margaret said; “I would like to say a big thank you to the Council. They listened to my request and the workmen have done a brilliant job.”

School wins Grab A Grand cash Robert Shaw Primary School in Southfield Road, Leen Valley, has been awarded £1,000 Grab a Grand funding for West Area this year, to turn a disused pond into a school allotment, and transform an overgrown wooded area into an outdoor classroom The money will pay for a skip, top soil to level the pond area, and tools and gloves for pupils to use. The canopy of the shaded area will be raised, and logs provided for a seating area. Nottingham City Council’s Grab a Grand campaign made £1,000 available to each of the nine Area Committees across Nottingham, along with an additional £1,000 to be spent on a scheme that will benefit the whole city. Transforming Nottingham’s Neighbourhoods

Neighbourhood Regeneration in Action Broxtowe Country Park News Work on the Broxtowe Country Park project is now underway. Nottingham City Council has received funding to carry out a ground investigation and prepare a detailed masterplan of the site. The Council has started its work on the ground investigation, which will build a detailed picture of the site both at surface level and below ground. This is particularly important due to the park's previous use as a landfill site, and will enable us to determine what developments can go on the park and where. Following this, work will begin

on preparing a “masterplan” - a comprehensive plan of the site, showing how the most beneficial development for the park and surrounding area could be achieved. The project will be overseen by a Steering Group, which will provide a chance for local residents to shape the project and help the City Council reach others and get them involved. The first meeting for the Steering Group has recently taken place but we need more residents to tell us what you would like to see in your park.

Construction work started in July 2008 and the pupils and staff moved into the new school in November 2009. The new building provide state of the art facilities which includes light and airy classrooms with the latest in technology to support learning and improve achievement, a large sports hall, a hydro therapy pool and a multi-gym. A fully furnished apartment will also provide a training asset for older pupils.

Aspley's children have played their part and the local Councillors acknowledge everyone's support. Aspley Christmas Tree Switch On will take place at 6.00pm on Friday Dec 4th at the crossing of Aspley Lane and Melbourne Road. This event has become a tradition in the local events diary, supported by your local Councillors through local area funding. through the Broxtowe Training Centre, a scheme has been developed to ensure small works such as the transformation of greens can be done by local firms who employ local people. Aspley has talent, and all will be revealed on the 19th December when the locals come out to show that they have what it takes to become a superstar. Simon Cowell may be missing from the judging panel but we do have our very own Sheriff of Nottingham!

Bilborough Councillor Derek Cresswell Tel: 0115 929 7668* Bilborough Councillors Malcolm Wood, Derek Cresswell and Marcia Watson were pleased to learn that Hadden Park High School has been shortlisted for the 'best design for a re-modelled school' award in the Annual Excellence in Building Schools for the Future Awards. Councillor Wood commented “Bilborough Councillors are delighted with the progress made on Hadden Park High School and we hope that pupils and staff are enjoying using the English and languages areas of the new school.”

Councillor Marcia Watson Tel: 07943 829 570 Bilborough Councillors were also pleased to announce that Birchover Park was officially opened and that Graham Allen MP planted a tree on the site. Council Leader Jon Collins, accompanied by Bilborough Councillors visited the site and said, “this will be a great asset to the community.” On a recent ward visit they had looked at the refurbishment of Hadden Park High School and the new Academy which replaces William Sharp School. Both schemes are on target and the quality of the work appears to be first class.

Councillor Malcolm Wood Tel: 0115 915 5134 The new Shepherd School is nearing completion and should be opened by December 2009. Councillor Cresswell officially opened the Boxing Club at the Rose Inn. This was possible due to lots of hard work and input from the landlord Joe Evans. A grant was made available to help cover the costs. In the Billborough ward, grants were also made to the Beechdale Community Centre, Seagrave Court, and Strelley in Bloom, to help with their various projects. *Please note: correct phone number for Derek Cresswell

Bilborough Councillor Alex Foster Tel: 0115 915 0064 Children now have somewhere safe to play on the Ainsley estate near the ring road. After many years of trying to get the playing fields reopened, Councillors Gary Long and Alex Foster and local community supporters have finally managed to get all the ducks in a row. Insurance, regular maintenance and agreement from the Education Department to use the field has been approved. Local residents have helped a lot and the Ainsley Area Residents Association and Robert Shaw school

Councillor Gary Long Tel: 07818 841 047 have helped with every step along the way. Both Councillors have used some of their councillor ward budgets to pay for the initial maintenance to get the field up to scratch. It was hoped that the field would be open during the summer holidays, but because it rained so much in August, it proved impossible to get the grass cut down to a suitable standard. The playing field belongs to the school, so the field won't be available in school hours, but it should be unlocked after school and in the school holidays.
