Sunday 20th December 2009 4pm - 7pm
This year, local Councillors from Radford and Park have funded a Christmas tree for all the local community to enjoy. There will be an official countdown to switch on with warm drinks, toasted marshmallows, carol singing, and Sweepy the neighbourhood cat will be there to join in the festivities. The tree is to be located on the corner of Alfreton Road and Hartley Road. Come and get in the festive spirit at the Arboretum, where the trees will be lit around the bandstand. There will be live performances from St Andrews music group and Top Brass. Santa will be paying a visit during the evening, and there will be activities for the children, as well as snow! Non alcoholic mulled wine and mince pies will be served (please note: first come, first served).
Talking of Christmas… Monday 21st & Tuesday 22nd December 2009 As part of our Christmas plans, the Talking Point Café at the Mary Potter Centre would like to invite you to join them in decorating their Christmas tree with a difference. The café and your local Neighbourhood Management Team would like local
people to come and decorate the tree with ideas and suggestion(s) of what improvements you would like to see in your local community for 2010. Your efforts will be rewarded with a complementary mince pie and you will be entered into a prize draw to receive a voucher to spend in the cafe. So come along to our cafe at The Mary Potter Centre, Gregory Boulevard, Hyson Green on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd December to join in the fun! Also – bring in your copy of the Community Arrow to redeem a bacon cob with hot drink for just £2.50!

Festiwal 2009 – A community festival with a Polish flavour The Polish government designated 2009 the year for promoting polish culture in the UK. Nottingham based charity, Signpost to Polish Success were inspired by this and decided to organise FESTIWAL 2009. It was held on Sunday 30th August 2009 and the organisers saw the event as a “unique opportunity to bring together people from different cultures and ages, with the aim of promoting racial and generational harmony”.
Community Researchers The Radford Neighbourhood plan is currently being developed with the help of the local community. Part of the consultation is carried out with local people by a team of community researchers who are given training to complete the surveys. Majid Bashir tells us of his experience… “Meeting new people and talking to them always fascinates me, so to become a community researcher hit the nail on the head!
There was plenty of music and dancing, sports activities, stalls with a variety of foods including traditional polish flavours and activities for the children. For more information about this event or the charity Signpost of Polish Success, contact them at: 473B Alfreton Road (access via Grimston Road) Radford Nottingham NG7 5NH Tel (0115) 970 0446
Working with Neighbourhood Regeneration is a great cause and unique experience for me, and Radford and its mills have historical significance in Nottingham as well as the UK. All these things combined were the stimulus for me volunteering to become part of the community researchers team. This work gave me confidence that I am an important and significant part of the community. During my work in the area, I experienced that people are highly committed to improving their community, and they want to participate to bring change. They know that they are responsible for the development and the progress of the area. It is true that their multicultural community is very good, tolerant and is an example for the multicultural world.” For more information on the Radford Neighbourhood plan turn to page 5.

On-street drinking Following residents' concerns about the recent increase of street drinking in the area, posters have been placed in and around the perimeter of the alcohol control area in the Arboretum ward. Local neighbourhood action officer Linda Wright and the local safer neighbourhood team have increased the number of signs displayed in the area in Polish as displayed here.

Voluntary group “signpost to polish success is also on board and has agreed to help raise awareness of the alcohol control area and the penalties people can face with patrons in their newspaper”
Through partnership working we have been able to secure more resources in the area, resulting in extra patrols around Bridlington Street, Thurman Street and Holland Street. This has

Transforming Nottingham’s Neighbourhoods
Neighbourhood Regeneration in Action Consultation on the Radford Neighbourhood Plan We held a launch event on 10 October 2009 to start a period of consultation on the council's plans to regenerate parts of Radford and Hyson Green. It took place at Take One Studios on Grant Street Radford and gave people a chance to look at story boards that explain the plan’s objectives and the vision for improving the area. Following the launch there was a week of further consultation at 86 Alfreton Road. In late October local volunteers also conducted surveys out in the community and participants were entered into a prize draw. The prizes included a £50 Victoria Centre shopping voucher, Day Rider Passes, and tickets to the Playhouse. A big thank you goes to everyone who got involved. We need local people to shape the plans for change and to make the area cleaner, greener, safer, with improved
facilities and housing choice. To find out more information on the Radford Neighbourhood plan or to share your views contact Fran Roberts on 0115 915 5394 or email fran.roberts@nottinghamcity.gov.uk www.mynottingham.gov.uk/radford

Councillor News
Local News From Your Area Councillors Councillors Your local City Councillors want to improve the quality of life for all residents, and support local people to get involved in making decisions about the things that matter to you. If you have anything you wish to discuss or would like their view on a story you wish to contribute to the Community Arrow, do feel free to get in touch.
Arboretum Councillor Merlita Bryan Tel: 07943 829 569 Arboretum Councillor Merlita Bryan has been attending Neighbourhood meetings to ensure residents concerns and priorities are raised and discussed. She is currently working with the police who are investigating damage to vehicles in the All Saints area. There have been problems with fly-tipping in Coalville Street and Cllr Bryan is involved in discussions to try and combat this. She would also like to discourage residents from putting bins out before bin collection day as this has caused problems of access and blocks footpaths. If you have any issues or concerns you would like to raise with Cllr Bryan please contact her on the number listed or email: merlita.bryan@nottinghamcity.gov.uk
Councillor Tony Marshall Tel: 0115 948 2073 Like many local residents, Councillor Tony Marshall is fed up of seeing rubbish casually dumped in our City. To help combat this, he recently asked for ‘You Are Being Watched’ signs to be put up in Vincent Gardens in the Arboretum ward. He hopes this will help to stop would-be flytippers who spoil the environment with their inconsiderate behaviour. On a personal note, he would like to wish everyone across the City a very Happy Festive Season and a safe New Year.

now means that the store must remain with the current agreed licensing hours and stop selling alcohol at midnight. This proves that local residents have a lot of power.
Councillor Katrina Bull supported residents again in an appeal to the Magistrates Court over an application that the council has refused to allow. A general store along Alfreton Road applied to sell alcohol 24 hours a day, having had a history of anti-social behaviour linked to the sale of late night alcohol. Councillors turned the application down after hearing evidence from neighbours. Unfortunately the store’s owners appealed this decision and it was then referred to the magistrate’s court. After months of preparation the council attended the hearing, along with residents, a senior police inspector, and Cllr Katrina Bull as witnesses. However, the store owner did not turn up to the hearing, wasting a great deal of legal and court time. The appeal was dismissed and the store asked to pay legal costs of £8000. This
Councillors Afzal Khan and Mohammad Aslam are keen to support Cllr Bull in a new initiative of funding ‘get to know your neighbour events’ – if you and a group of neighbours would like a Christmas Party, or would like to have a gardening day, or a clean up campaign so that you can get to know each other better, they can help with a small pot of money. Together the Councillors have ten prizes of £100 to be won by local residents in Radford or Lenton if you come forward with an idea that can bring your street together. Contact Cllr Katrina Bull for more details. Write to: The Council House, FREEPOST (NG2 120), Nottingham, NG1 1BR or email: katrina.bull@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

The children will be encouraged to get involved in the work, with local outlets and families asked to donate materials, seeds, and any items that may be of use.
