Sycamore Park Plans A programme of improvements has been put together to tackle Sycamore Park, with the aim of reclaiming the park for the local community to use and enjoy. By installing new facilities and rejuvenating some of the surrounding landscape, it is hoped that the park can work towards achieving Green Flag status.
The park plays an important role as it is a historical open space in the heart of the community, which, over the years has provided valuable recreational facilities and green space for local residents. After much consultation with residents, a programme of actions has been put in place, some short term and others to run over a longer period. Local people said they would like to see a children’s play area, toilets, benches, a football pitch, as well as activities such as community events,
Festival Feedback My name is Sophie. I design and make creative soft furnishings. This year I was proud to be a stallholder at the Sherwood Festival in Woodthorpe Park. Leading up to the festival I made lots of cushions and candles. I also printed lots of flyers and cards. I thought that it was a great opportunity to promote my work. encouraging. For many it was their second year but we were made so welcome. On arrival, the sun was out and there was a beautiful happy atmosphere. There were lots of plants, home made food, clothes and toys on sale. We especially loved the vintage ice creams. My daughter, Melissa, was able to wander around - there was just a small charge for workshops to cover materials for craft activities. It was great to see so many stalls, to see people relaxing, enjoying themselves and being creative. Article written by local resident Sophie Henry.
Sherwood Festival 2010 is taking place on Sat 26th June 2010. For more information or to book a stall please contact the Neighbourhood Management Team on 0115 915 1390.

Karen from the Textile Workshop explains, “The reason I set up the teaching side to the textile workshop is that I wanted to share my skills and let people experience the huge amount of satisfaction that making things gives you”. Her enthusiasm is clear when she explains that “making is contagious!”
Karen believes that “in our busy lives today, making time for yourself is so important. Coming on a class gives you this time in a sociable environment.”

Sherwood's local Councillors Penny Griggs, Brian Parbutt and Jane Urquhart were able to report back on recent activity in the area at the “Sherwood Conference” held on 13th October. The conference, held at the superb new community facility at St Johns Church in Carrington brought together community reps and local residents from across the ward. As always in Sherwood ward, those present were keen to share news about local developments and make suggestions for improving the area. “It was great that so many people came and we had an opportunity to update local residents about everything that is going on,” said Councillor Penny Griggs. In their ‘You said, we did together’ report Penny, Jane and Brian outlined the range of current local activities, including: ■ Support through the ward budget for Sherwood Football Club and the Edward’s Lane Youth Club ■ The proposed new multi use sports area on Valley Road
Councillor Brian Parbutt Tel: 0115 962 3059
■ Cultural and community events, including the Sherwood Arts Week, Sherwood Festival and Christmas Lights events ■ Plans for new toilets and a café near to the play area on Woodthorpe Park ■ Ongoing talks with Haydn Primary School to develop the school ground for use by young people out of school hours ■ The latest proposals for the Area Capital Pot, which will fund Environmental improvements to Sherwood and Carrington Shopping Centres. Over £1 million has already been spent in the ward, including any pavements being resurfaced and the new Mansfield Street/Crich View footpath. “Many of the things we are currently doing locally have been as a direct result of residents raising them at community meetings, through our surgeries, and in response to our surveys,” said Councillor Jane Urquhart, “and we will continue to consult and involve local people in the development of all of these ideas.”
