In May 2002, after a large public consultation exercise and extensive feasibility work on six possible routes, the City and County Councils agreed to progress the design of two tram routes to Clifton via Wilford and to Chilwell via QMC and Beeston. Since then, the City and County Councils have carried out significant further development work and have submitted a case for funding to Central Government. Importantly, the outline design has now been developed, which forms the basis of this consultation. The designs include a more detailed consideration of the tram alignment including road layouts, potential stop locations, parking and loading provision, landscaping and ways of screening the tram and providing for any lost trees and vegetation. In order to produce these designs a considerable amount of preparatory work has been undertaken including ground investigations, engineering studies and environmental surveys, as well as taking account of economic and planning considerations. This information will also be used to inform the Environmental Statement, which would be submitted as part of any Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) application to Government.

This consultation is a very important stage and it is vital that you take the opportunity to comment. If the Councils and then the Government, following a Public Inquiry, approve the tram routes then these designs will be used as a template to build the system. It is therefore important that you have your say on the detail now, whatever your views on the project as a whole.

Route Description

Ruddington Lane

The Clifton via Wilford route joins Line One at Nottingham railway station, offering through journeys to the city centre and beyond without changing trams. It continues down Queen’s Walk and passes over the River Trent on the Wilford Toll Bridge. From Main Road the route turns alongside Coronation Avenue and operates along the former railway line behind Wilford and Compton Acres. It then runs to the south of Silverdale and into Clifton. The route passes along Southchurch Drive and at Holy Trinity turns into Farnborough Road. The route terminates at a Park and Ride between the A453 and Nottingham Road, south of Clifton.

Vehicle deterrent measures will be used to prevent vehicles from crossing the bridge from Riverside Way/Victoria Embankment. The existing road link between the Victoria Embankment and Robin Hood Way will be closed with alternative access provided off Riverside Way

New areas of open space would be created consisting primarily of grass and trees.

The Queens Walk tram stop would be set out like a plaza with high quality paving and shrub planting. There would be a single central platform at this location and the tramway would be clearly defined with a different surfacing. The tram stop would have passenger shelters, real-time information boards, CCTV and passenger help buttons, which are linked to the CCTV system when pressed.

An avenue of trees would be continued along the western side of the plaza, but this will be set back from the existing avenue planting along Queens Walk to accommodate the clearance required for the trams and cycleway.

The cycleway would be bound gravel and the pedestrian route would be high quality paving.

The tram would pass over Wilford Bridge towards Queens Walk. The bridge would be widened to allow space for the tram, pedestrians and cyclists. As many as possible of the historic features on the bridge would be retained. The Victoria Embankment and Riverside Way roundabout would be removed and replaced with a new junction with traffic lights.

A new cycleway would run directly adjacent to the tram track. It is proposed to use a porous bound gravel surface and construct the cycleway above existing ground level to minimise tree root disturbance. To reduce the visual impact of the tram track, and give an informal character, the surface would be resin bound gravel. The existing footpaths would be retained on the outside of the walk.

Many of the existing footways, which cross from one side of Queens Walk to the other, would be retained, with slight amendments to the alignment to ensure that the existing trees are not affected.

The tramway would then continue along Queens Walk towards Nottingham Station. Queens Walk is an important feature in Nottingham. It is currently a pedestrian and cycle link running from Wilford into the City Centre, framed by an attractive single and double tree-lined avenue. The trees are mainly mature lime trees and the aim of the design along this stretch would be to retain as many of the trees as possible, replacing any that are lost. Queens Walk would then remain an attractive boulevard.

Along the double avenue of trees, south of Robin Hood Way, the inner row of trees will need to be removed, with replacement trees planted further away from the tramway. A cross section of how this will look is shown overleaf. 4

As Queens Walk meets Robin Hood Way the tramway would rise and Robin Hood Way would be lowered resulting in a new junction with traffic lights. The existing underpass will be removed and replaced with on-street crossings.

At the Meadows Centre tram stop a small plaza would be created with high quality paving and shrub planting. The trees lost at this point would be replaced within the hard surfacing to continue the avenue. Occasional vehicle access to the church would be provided from Meadows Way, down the bound gravel cycleway, and around the stop to the church. Measures to prevent other vehicles from using this route will be provided. The tram stop would have passenger shelters, real-time information boards, CCTV and passenger help buttons, which are linked to the CCTV system when pressed.

The cycleway and Kirkewhite Walk would also pass through the plaza, with the different patterned materials clearly defining the tramway, cycleway and pedestrian routes.

There will be points along Queens Walk for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the tramway safely. The surface would be a different colour so as to clearly mark the crossing route.

The roundabout at the Sherriffs Way/Meadows Way junction would be replaced with new traffic lights and crossings. The access to Sherriffs Way on the north side of Meadows Way will close as part of the Southside Development Proposals.

Nottingham Station Masterplan The design of the NET alignment and the tram stop at Nottingham Railway Station will continue to be developed in conjunction with the Station Masterplan (see picture). This will provide a radical transformation of the station into the key transport interchange in the city involving train, tram, bus, coach, taxi and private car, cyclists and pedestrians. Southside Development The Southside Development area aims to provide a gateway to the city centre from the south by encouraging new development opportunities which include high quality employment sites and a mix of housing around Nottingham canal and the railway station. Improved links will be created to the Meadows Area.

The road layout and urban design in this area will be planned as part of the Southside Development proposals and as such is still in the development stage. The aim would be to provide some landscaping and a pleasant pedestrian and cycle link would also be a feature on this main route into Nottingham City Centre.

The tramway would approach Nottingham Station from Crocus Street, ramping up and crossing over Tinkers Leen and Queen's Road on a new bridge. Land take would be required from the Crown Inn and some of the industrial units would need to be demolished. Crocus Street would need to be closed east of the tramway. There would be the opportunity to situate tree planting outside the Crown Inn at the junction to soften it and create a more attractive environment.

NET would offer through journeys to and from the City Centre and beyond towards Hucknall and Phoenix Park. A new tram stop would be provided at Nottingham Station. It is expected trams would no longer stop at the current Line One stop at Capital One but the pedestrian routes, including the lift down to Station Street would be retained for use by the public. Access to the new tram stop would also be provided from the Nottingham Station street-level entrance and from Queen's Road. The NET tram stop will allow passengers to easily interchange with trains calling at Nottingham Station. Pedestrian, cycle and bus improvements are also planned to make interchange as easy as possible.

It is very important that you use this opportunity to make your views heard as your comments could be used to amend the plans and, following approval from the Councils and Government, they would be used as a template to build the system. The plans shown in this booklet have been drawn up as a representation of the likely extent of works required to construct the proposed tram route. They are however, indicative and will be developed further as the project progresses.

We would be particularly pleased to receive your comments on the tram alignment, tramstop locations, the revised road layout and the proposed landscape.

As a result of this consultation, the plans could be amended and the limits of land interest shown in any Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) application may therefore differ from those shown in this booklet.

Deadline for receipt of comments 21/11/03.

After any amendments have been made, the Councils will both meet in full session to consider an application for a TWAO from Government. A TWAO would give the Councils the powers necessary to build and operate the proposed tramways to Clifton via Wilford and Chilwell via QMC and Beeston.

We expect an independent Public Inquiry to take place, probably in 2004, where any application for a TWAO would be considered and in which all interested people could participate. The Inquiry would be advertised in good time, when the dates are known.
