What you will learn
Study Modes
On this programme you will develop both the academic and practical skills necessary to understand the modernisation and commercialisation of the sport and leisure industries, identifying the key influencing agencies and trends which contribute to effective management of sport and leisure organisations. The broad range of perspectives that you will be encouraged to explore will enable you to review the challenges of serving and responding to the global sport and leisure landscape.
Study part time or full time with start dates in September and January.
Alongside specialist sports and leisure modules, your programme includes study of the core functional and leadership skills you need to progress in any organisation. This will enable you to engage with MBA students from across different industries/ sectors promoting the sharing of new ideas and approaches as you learn about strategic management, marketing, financial and people management. The pathway modules will then allow you to focus on industry specific themes. Key issues will be explored blending current academic theory with practical application of ideas. You will engage in sport and leisure specific study to enable the development of knowledge and skills in strategic management of sports and leisure organisations, event planning/management and impacts assessment, managing operations in large scale facilities, modernisation of sport and leisure and the exploration of new management and business models within the sector. You will also analyse the global reach of sport and leisure including identifying the economic and social influence on world regions and markets through the growth of sport for development programmes, exploring a variety of international models and considering the effects of globalisation and commercialisation.
How you will learn The MBA Sport Management programme will be delivered via a combination of lectures, seminars/workshops and online/virtual communication. You will be encouraged to carry out independent research after being introduced to contemporary issues and industry specific management models which you can apply to functional areas/ organisations with which you are familiar. Such conceptual and theoretical issues are studied during weekly lectures and tutorials. These sessions will allow you to explore topics and their application to case studies pertaining to sport and leisure management in a variety of UK and international contexts. During tutorials, students will also have the opportunity and encouragement to apply these issues to their chosen organisation and gain individual, formative feedback working with industry speakers, visiting lecturers, and blending this approach with e-learning platforms and networking opportunities.
Assessment The programme uses a range of assessment methods designed to closely integrate skills required for professional practice with academic abilities. These include reports, reflective accounts, group work and presentations and aim to support students in developing their leadership and management capabilities throughout the programme.
