‘The 100’ a book series selected for its formidable concept, revolving around the survival of the human race in the after math of a nuclear armageddon. The series consist of three books; ‘The 100’, ‘The 100 - Day 21’ and ‘The 100 Homecoming’, which was re-design. The 100 being a newly renowned hit television show on ‘The CW Network’. It was decided to graphically develop a set of covers that are visually suitable for the book series. All three books portrayed a similar effect and are linked effectively as a series, I decided to utilise the same designed mockup, text types and a similar colour palettes to ensure fluidity and quality. The series genre being juvenile fiction with a strong emphasis on leadership, law and order so the covers’ type was customised to accommodate this. Digital type and analogue styles were implemented. My personal handwriting was recorded as a way of symbolically representing the series genre of juvenile fiction, primitive living, as well as a way of foreshadowing the content to come. For the main illustration on the front of all three covers I designed a very simplistic font style that symbolically represents order, structure and stability, these being the main underlying contributors to the survival of both ‘The Ark’ and the100. By joining the ‘the’ and the ‘100’ it represents a constant clash in authority, a struggle to coexist, and the idea of uniting to a common objective, ‘to survive’. All text on all three covers consist of the colour white, which creates a clean professional appearance. This pure colour ultimately symbolises a new beginning for all 100 juvenile offenders, as well as hope in their ability to persevere and survive for the human race.
‘THE 100 The first book in the series predominantly revolves around the idea that everything is falling apart and that the human race may be lost forever. Resources dwindling and The Ark’s systems failing, forcing the leadership on The Ark to send the convicted juvenile criminals (The 100) to ground. A metal light grey texture was used for the text to represent the drop ship’s metal exterior, which is seen to be breaking apart as it enters the earth’s atmosphere. The underlying message here in a figurative sense is the idea of sacrifice and a divided society, however, in conjunction to the fraying pieces of light grey metal, this signifies the stripping of innocence and a the transformation into maturity. THE 100 - DAY 21 The second instalment in the series revolves around the struggle to coexist and fear of a relentless threat. This unmerciful clan of survivors - radiation immune descendants of the nuclear apocalypse, are fierce, primitive and combat trained. The 100 experience the repercussions of their presence as some of their people are killed. Day 21’s cover was designed with a dark red text to evoke a strong sense of blood and war, also associated with the physical need and will to live. Dark shadows were also incorporated to represent ‘The Grounders’ (threat) attempt to subdue The 100, and a stream of light represents their hope and desire to survive for their people. THE 100 - HOMECOMING Homecoming, revolving around decisions that could inevitably effect the survival of their people. A struggle for leadership and control with the arrival of The Ark’s inhabitants. Cover three was designed to represent and to symbolise a broken society as a drop ship is destroyed upon entry. The grey and dark tones in and around the fractured pieces tell of death and a controlling power, both heavily enlaced through homecoming and the series. A remaining light although dim, still glows around the words ‘The 100’, as this lighter grey is signifying hope and the groups maturity and newly found independents.
