STATEMENT

"Arts & Design, a reflection of my mind."

I am originally from Taiwan, a little island that was influenced by multiple cultures from the former colonization of the Spaniards, Dutch, Japanese, the aboriginals in the mountains, and the oriental Chinese inheritance. The richness, accessibility, and diversity of these impacts in my hometown led me dreaming to become an artist at a young age and gave me the environment to convey arts through different manners without limitation. What I see in everyday life inspires me as a designer and reflects on the works I am doing simultaneously. Gradually, I have a deeper understanding of how every cultural habit can shape the world we see, we live, and experience. I hold an Applied Arts degree for my undergrad in Taiwan, which enables me to involve in various art mediums. Even though I was an Interior Architecture major, I had earned more aesthetic practices by joining the graphic design and metalsmithing programs. These allow me to cut in from different angles and perspectives when dealing with space and nurtured me as an artist that possesses skills, curiosity, and knowledge from different fields. After graduating in 2019, I feel unsatisfied and desired for more creative exploration. This is when I decided to head to New York, not only to expand my horizon as a student but

to see how a different environment navigates my works. I could spend hours walking in the city, just adoring the enormous scales of interior spaces and buildings, and the delicate classical European architectural features that I have never seen in Taiwan. All the amazement emotionally and methodically transformed into some of the following selective works and also reminds me how I should incorporate into my cultural roots. Not only being professionally skilled, but my strength of communication comes along when I was working as the design marketing director of the Worldwide Taiwanese Student Alliance and being one of the NYSID representative students of four attending the DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) exhibition. These experiences require effective communication and collaboration with people from different professional backgrounds and skillsets, developing a stronger understanding of problem-solving and cooperation during a teamwork setting. All the above constantly remind me to be like waterflexible, nonassertive and reflect what you experience through life on design.

# 1 CONCEPT “Life is a circus ring, with some moments more spectacular than others.” - Janusz Korczak Montreal is one of the most famous cities for circus-related activities, including the Montréal Cirque Festival which is held annually in the city,

and is where The National Circus School is located. It truly manifest the identity of the entire city.

Nights of the Caprice is a boutique hotel that provides an ambiance of wonders and mysteries that celebrates the excitement of circus arts and performance. This project focused on the characteristics that could be found in the circus and transformed into elements that merge into space to create a playful yet elegant interior environment that could amaze travelers around the world, leaving a spectacular living experience for the visitors.

2022 Spring

Unserved. INSTALLATION FOR THE DIFFA EXHIBITION

3 billion people in the world cannot afford the cheapest form of a healthy diet in today’s society. The proposed design “unserved” calls attention to the ongoing manifestation of food inequality throughout three tiers of different food stabilities. From the untouchable trace of food on the bottom tier, the comparably accessible grain-based food in the middle, to the expensive and nutritious products on the top tier, the gradual change in sculptural elements conveys a heartbreaking reality of abundance at the top and scarcity at the bottom. The multi cutting faces as the structure of the table creates motion of people eating while walking around center piece. It invites visitors to experience the desperate thirst to the top from the food insecurity perspective 811 million people experience today.

The intention of designing a dining table with untracable negative platings emphasized on the irony of how sufficient and priveleged we are as we placed the drinks and plates from the ongoing gala, educating and bringing consciousness to the visitors about starvation and food inequality.

# 1 CONCEPT This project is a renovation and adaptive reuse of a New York University building in the NOHO neighborhood of lower Manhattan. I programmed it as a new music school since the characteristic of The NOHO performing arts community is compatible. It will help introduce talented young musicians and composers to the New York music scene.

The main design parti of the project is to create spaces that express the elegant curves and textures of various kinds of instruments. The shapes of pianos, violins, harps, wind instruments and percussion are translated into a spatial language. In this school, classical music is emphasized as an essential background for all musicians.

The tradition of musical genres with rules is also introduced as an acknowledgement of historical styles and a way of evaluating new ideas. Modern and post modern styles are also discussed to provide an overview of recent innovations. With the comparison of classical and modern styles, students become aware of the value of each era and the potential for change. The intention of the design is to provide a musical quality in the environment that will inspire students to develop more creative work.

The Lobby area has a spiral staircase that creates a dramatic but simple scene of the main entrance façade. The restaurant creates a delicate environment, with classical moldings, arches, and bronze materials in the area, complementing the idea of classical arts and the exterior of the original building. As the most formal space of all floors, the basement of recital halls and galleries is the most solemn and quiet space, muted colors creating elegancy & simpleness.

Entering the education floors, the ambiance started to feel more welcoming and casual as the marble and stone floors are replaced by concrete and wood. The waves and linear elements on these floors symbolize various instruments. The balanced combination of simple modern and ornamented neo-classical, or art deco style could be seen in details.

The rooftop area is presented in an organic manner, conveying the flow of music. The stage of the rehearsal classroom features a folding acoustic door that could open up, which not only acts as a classroom but a small performing area on the rooftop.

This project was to design a chair with clear instructions for the assembly as an IKEA product. The packaging also stands an important part due to the brand's mass production feature and the convenience of carrying and shipping to customers.

# 1 CONCEPT

The Brooklyn Bridge

London Bridge folding down

The main structure of the chair is inspired by the gothicstyled bridges. The folded function comes from the idea of bridges folding up and down for passengers to cross through. This is also when I come up with the product name-VIKAD BRO, which means “the bridge” in Swedish.

Inspired by the traditional wooden tofu mold and the process of tofu making. The texture of tofu reminds me of the bounciness and comfort of cushions. The color and materials thus inspired a piece of Asian- styled furniture that fits into micro apartments.

Midsummer Forest BRANDING DESIGN

A small concert by two sweet clients who composed a song called "Midsummer Forest". I tried to show the lively and cute side of the tune by illustrating animals with happy expressions.

In midsummer night, stardusts of the sky will dye the whole forest into pieces of purple and blue.Little animals gathered, wondering the small commotion. The music finally went off, and they erected their ears and enjoyed the auditory feast of Midsummer Night.

"Forest Pie" is a concept, an atmosphere, the ripe and golden ears of paddy, a breeze between rice fields, or a face that is grinning in the sunset. It is the transfer of happiness.

Self Portrait OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS

There were times whenI feel lost, and I started painting this potrait. There are 4,392 blocks and approximately 2,500 colors on this canvas. With too much work load, sometimes I wonder who I am and what I am passionate for. However, everytime I lift my paint brush and fill in more colors, I feel satisfied and safe.

Jade Mountain Azalea JEWELRY DESIGN

This work symbolizes the image of Jade mountain Azalea (the endemic species of Taiwan) fully bloomed all over the mountain in spring. The interlacing of simple lines creates multiple mountain ridgelines. This could create a visual effect of flowers dancing within these lines. The Jade inlaid in the center of the Azalea represent the image of Yushan (which means Jade mountain and is the pinnacle of Taiwan) The different colored diamonds indicate the density of the flowers on the mountain. This work is dedicated to my beloved favorite mountain in Taiwan.

Hana Li Su JEWELRY DESIGN & METALSMITHING

Japanese of "the flower squirrel." In spring, its figure will shuttle through your balcony or garden. Holding the seeds in its arms, verdant green shoots sprang up. When it touched the buds gently, the flowers that were about to wither, slowly, beautifully bloom again. This is a small monster I created as the representative of my character- a good girl appearance but a crazy and enthusiastic mind. It has a dandelion shaped tail, and it always holds a seed to implement its magic.

Formosan Sika Deer JEWELRY DESIGN

Formosan Sika Deer, also known as plum blossom deer in Chinese, is an endemic species in Taiwan. This leads to the inspiration of creating this piece. A little deer growing up in the fragrance of plum blossoms,its horn growing into plum blossom branches.The organic graphics extended into balanced totem with a touch of oriental elements.
