Where did you learn about beauty and get inspiration from?

Tell me about your makeup routine. I use M.A.C. Brow Gel to bring out my eyebrows, then I curl my eyelashes every morning and apply M.A.C. Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Venomous Violet with my fingers —I use it as a lip balm multiple times throughout the day because I hate having bare lips. After that, I'll apply a different matte red depending on my mood. I apply it generously with my fingers to get a melted, messy look. I also take my YSL Touche Éclat luminizing pen with me. It's the only thing I put on my skin during the day. I also keep my hand cream with me (Nuxe Honey Dream) because I hate having dry skin. For my eyes, I wear a very thin line of black eyeliner just to lengthen the eye and I almost never wear mascara; I like natural lashes.

I live in Paris, a city where you have a lot of stylish women, so I learned a lot by observing the women in the street. But my mother was always a big influence, as well; she is always very feminine in high heels and perfectly cut dresses, with perfect makeup but never too much. She taught me never to expose myself to the sun without SPF 50 and never between 12 and 4 PM.

How do you style your hair? Every morning, I wash my hair with a gentle Klorane shampoo and I put Opalis almond cream on the ends. I always let my hair air-dry so it has a natural shape to it—every single day of the year. While I'm putting on makeup, I keep my damp hair in a low chignon. At the end of the morning, I take out the chignon and it leaves great natural-looking waves in my hair.

What’s your favorite spa in Paris? I like the Spa Valmont at Le Meurice for its massages. By the time she made her way down to the kitchen, which is fully outfitted with pastel pink Smeg accessories, right down to her mixing stand (ICYMI: she recently-ish released her own namesake cookbook.

Allow us to flashback to Paris Fashion Week for a second. We mean, if we had a time machine, we hypothetically couldn't think of a better use—just saying. As is custom in the land of Balmain, brie and baguette, and in between all that Margiela and CHANEL (oh, the CHANEL), we happened to come down with a serious case of who’s-that-girl syndrome. And not to get all Eve-circa-2001, but when you spot a girl who looks like a younger, French logo-loving (we’re talking Sonia Rykiel and Kenzo, here) almost-sister of Charlotte Gainsbourg in nearly every front row and at just about every impossibly cool party, you’ve kind of got some sort of social responsibility to piece it together, right? A little Cov-style super sleuthing later (social media does have its uses, kids) lead us not only to the girl, who turned out to be the one and only Jeanne Damas, but also right to her apartment door. (Yes, we’re that good.) And let’s just say it took approximately T-minus zero seconds for us to realize that Damas is, in fact, the ultimate Parisian. We mean, she actually has that just-woke-up-like-this, shaggy-banged, full-lipped beauty that all of those How-to-be-Française self-help books plug (don’t even say you haven’t picked up one or two of those and shrugged them off as a guilty pleasure. Please.) As Damas frolicked on her perfectly Parisian balcony—complete with the whole famous City-of-Light rooftop view thing, of course—and puffed on Gauloises, we got to the good stuff: namely, her clothes. And, of course, leave it to the ultimate French It-girl to have the the ultimate French closet—we mean, how could she not? Going through her wardrobe was like playing I-Spy with the most iconic of French labels: hello, Sonia, Céline, Dior and Isabel Marant. Let's put it this way.

Well, that’s kind of what happened in our office this week, minus the no-show talent.Once we realized that our newest employee just happens to have a face that’d melt a polar vortex, a steadily climbing social media following, and a very on-trend ombré mop, we enlisted his photogenics and fluffiness to help us out on a shoot.

Of course, we’re talking about Walter, our resident Whoodle (that’s a Wheaten Terrier-poodle for those of you who don’t comb @thedogist like it’s your day job). If you’re actually reading these words rather than staring mouth-agape at those puppy eyes, 1) what is wrong with you, and 2) please divert your attention to those teeny-tiny paws for the goodness of your own health. Given that Walter turns us into puddles of baby-talking, personal space-invading goo, we paired him with all of the spring things that make us equally weak in the knees—think slip-ons stamped with pastel unicorns, googly-eyed clutches and watermelon seed-flecked pumps. (Note the conscious effort to eschew anything above the ankle with a closed toe—this whole springtime-snow situation has given us a cabin fever of 103.

HOW TO TAKE MAKE-UP FROM DAY TO NIGHT

in 60 seconds

4 WAY-EASY STEPS YOU WON'T EVEN NEED TO PUT YOUR DRINK DOWN FOR. It's some time past 6:30PM. You're at the office, still hunched over your desk ignoring a project with a looming deadline in lieu of Buzzfeed when an iMessage pings up on your screen: 'Drinks tonight?'.

Vuala

Skip applying a heavy, cake-y concealer over the day's make-up and instead go for something slightly more sheer that will both illuminate and lift the eye area. Touch up dark circles and sweep away the day's debris. Bareminerals' Stroke of Light Eye Brightener or Radiance Booster Pen do just the trick and both products have brushes that can cover the entire area or zero in on specific nooks and crannies — ideal for said backseat application.

You've already handily missed your 5:45PM hot yoga (oops! Funny how these things just kind of work out, right?), and so the answer is a resounding 'yes'. Because in this hypothetical situation you're the sort of hyper-organized friend who keeps a pair of after-dark-only shoes and a little leather jacket stashed away at work for this exact type of occasion (note to self: do that) —you're sartorially equipped.

2. add drama

Now onto your beauty state: your daytime mascara and liner has melted into your under eye region, your complexion is vaguely blotchy and you look, well, tired. The key to kicking things up a notch (or two) comes down to two vital steps: perfecting and brightening, while simultaneously adding a touch of interest, likely in the lip or eye region. The only catch? It probably has to involve fingertip-free application, an ideal for the backseat of an Uber or even the 6 train. Here's how to do it in four steps.

No one ever got into Studio 54 with just a touch of mousy brown mascara. Okay, fine, maybe they did, but that person was probably Lauren Hutton. Instead, think Diana Ross and add a little drama—the easiest way is with a foolproof pencil that doesn't require the laserpoint precision of liquid and can be smudged along the lashline for something a little more smokey and shadow-y. We like NARS' Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in the shade Aigle Noir, with its teensy-tiny flecks of gold shimmer.A few squeezes with an eyelash curler (like Phoebe Tonkin, we're loyal to Shu Uemura's) is a foolproof way to look like you totally didn't have to wake up at 6 A.M.

4. finishing touches If a lip look that involves a lip brush, liner and a shade of lipstick that requires concerted effort is more your thing, all the more power to you. But when we're already 20 minutes late, we'll take a nude-y, natural shade that can be applied out of the tube any day. Following the "your lips, only better" maxim. This is where we'd reach for YSL's Rouge Volupte Lipstick in Peach Passion, which can be sheered out with a few dabs of lip balm overtop. More often than not, 3 shots of espresso takes care of our energy levels on the inside but it’s our bloodshot dark-circled eyes and sleep-deprived skin that give us away every damn time. New York’s annual spring art extravaganza is back. Don’t worry if you’re not shelling out a couple mill for the next Damien Hirst, Sarah Hoover (she of the Gagosian Gallery and python Proenza Schouler) will be giving us her first hand account of what it's like to be on the inside of the art fair. Stay tuned, friends.

MONDAYS ON AMC

Starting this week, let your inner film snob out and cinema hop to see much-anticipated flicks like documentary A Ballerina’s Tale about Misty Copeland, The Adderall Diaries with James Franco and Amber Heard and Montage of Heck, the Courtney Love-approved Kurt Cobain doc that’s been eight years in the making. e have to admit, in our often tried but (also often) failed attempts to resolve our predilection towards anything cheeseand carb-heavy (typically accompanied by a glass of Malbec), we’ve been punch-drunk on many a green juice. The truth is, when it comes to cleanses, we can usually be seen relapsing and dropping out of the weeklong commitment by day three. FIRST THING: Lemon Water BREAKFAST: Beet Down Native Juice

By now, it's well established that as much as we love a simple syrup-fuelled cocktail or night spent hovering over a cheese plate; but we're also suckers for the feeling that only comes after a few days of clean, nutrient-dense eating. It needn't be about weight loss or achieving some impossible, arbitrary goal—our bodies and brains are just happier when we're putting health-enhancing food in our mouths. It's all about a tricky little thing by the name of balance—something that we find is increasingly hard to come by—and in the interest of attempting to achieve it, we've turned to Vanessa Packer and Nicole.

LUNCH: Red Lentil Soup with Socca Wraps SNACK: Kore Carrot Cake Shake

(you might remember them from our previous forays into feel-better eating plans). Here, they break down the best ways to get things back on track—we know all too well how real the, "two bowls of Special K, 3 pieces of turkey bacon, handful of popcorn, 5 peanut butter M&M's and, like, 3 pieces of licorice" struggle is.Full disclosure: on any given day, our food intake looks nothing like that of a nutritionist’s. While we have no problem squaring away a relatively healthy lunch (salad bar) and a somewhat passable dinner (does Thai takeout count?), the rest of the day, including breakfast.

DINNER: Cauliflower Fried Rice

(a super sized latte and either a Clif bar or a Starbucks breakfast sandwich), is a random amalgam of excessive snacking. It’s called keeping our energy up, you guys. Since we really can’t not snack, but our interest in maintaining some semblance of a healthy diet is still very much a priority, we called up Joy Bauer, New York City Ballet’s official nutritionist and an expert for the Today show, among others, who just launched her own health-conscious snack food line, Nourish Snacks.

On how she got started in the beauty game... “I grew up with a single, working mom who I would admire as she would get ready for work everyday. I have three sisters, two who are older, one who's younger, so there was definitely lots of femininity going around. [Makeup] had always been a hobby of mine. I would take my makeup to school and do my girlfriends’ eye shadow at lunch. One year, my sister gave me a Kevyn Aucoin makeup book for Christmas. She told me this was my passion and this is what I should be doing. Since then it’s been a total green light—go! On her personal daily beauty routine... “Things that are important to me: I definitely need moisturizer that has sunscreen on a daily basis because I’m very fair. I love a strong brow, so I use a Votre Vu tinted wax with an angled brush on my brows on a daily basis. I curl my lashes and I use a good amount of mascara. My favorite is Avon’s Mega Effects Mascara. Then I like a rosey cheek. I always wear blush, and then lips run the gamut of whatever my mood is. I sometimes will wear bright red or hot pink, a burgundy or a black, whatever I’m in the mood for, but I’m definitely a lipstick queen. In the morning,] I give myself 15 minutes at least. I don’t do a lot. I don’t do an eye. On how to apply lipstick like a pro (and exactly what to do with lip liner)... “You can have a little bit more precision when you use a brush and lip liners help your lipstick stay in place. You line your lips, put on your lipstick, and then, if you want a nice burnt red with a nice sharp pencil, go back in. You can re-define and perfect. “During the holidays I actually don’t mind eye shadow that much. I like a good milky, yet shiny eye—something with a metallic to it and lots of mascara and lashes. Or with a crimson lip. I love the winter lip shades of pinks, berries, burgundies and wines.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

On the ever-controversial mascara -on-the-bottom-lashes thing... “I wear mascara on my bottom lashes! It creates a rounder eye. I think it looks youthful and doll-like if that’s the look you’re going for, but it’s not for everybody. For instance, my sister has an almond eye and I’m sure she likes to have them appear rounder, but she has incredibly oily skin and if she wears eyeliner or mascara on the lower eye it just moves, even if it’s waterproof. It creates the illusion of a different shape. If you want your eyes to look rounder, more doll-like, than bottom lashes do that. The little tip of the brush is great—you want to make sure to dab it off first so it’s not a big glop of mascara; then it’s not a big mess. You just dab it on a tissue before you take it to your lower lashes. I just paint them so they exist—not so that they’re longer or bigger or fuller, it’s just so they’re a little bit darker.” On the biggest beauty mistake you can make... “Over-tweezed eyebrows!

On the products she always carries with her... “I think it’s a good idea to carry blotters with you [in case] you get oily. I also carry a chap stick or something for my lips because they get dry. If I’m wearing a chap stick or a lip gloss or lipstick, something to reapply because I’ll be drinking coffee, I talk a lot, I eat, so definitely a lip application." On the tricks to concealer application... “For the under-eye area, if you have any darkness or blueness, you [should use] a color that is too pink or peach for your skin. It battles the darkness and brightens it up. But don't use the same color, for instance, on a blemish because it doesn’t match. You want to have two concealers: one for the under-eye and one for spots. Spot concealer should just blend into your skin. For blemishes, use a tiny brush to dab on the spot; with your ring finger just press it instead of using a ton of product.” On dressing for the job... “For my job, I’ll get on my hands and knees when I’m rubbing lotion and shimmer into my client’s skin.

{"Should I get bangs?"}

If you're anything like us, you too have found yourself in front of a mirror, half a bottle of wine in one hand, scissors in the other, many a time. And while we're all for a little divine inspiration, word to the wise: not everyone can pull them off with the same aplomb as Erin Heatherton. Like, at all.Truth be told, we were a little taken aback when upon arriving at Heatherton's West Village apartment, she greeted us with a face full of wispy blonde bangs. But being on the receiving end of those baby Bardot vibes, we got on board real quick. The model gave us the full tour of her place—complete with an infrared sauna (#goals) and a Japanese soaking tub in her bathroom—before leading us to her immaculately arranged closet, where the real fun began. Laden with sleek Gianvito Rossi and Saint Laurent pumps and demure Tabitha Simmons and Chloé flats, and an impeccably indexed rack of sunglasses, our work was more or less cut out for us—and that's exactly the way Heatherton had intended for things to be.

Turns out, girl has a serious thing for interior design and decor when she's not busy plié-ing at Ballet Beautiful, walking for Jason Wu or fronting campaigns for Victoria's Secret and BLK Denim. She not only gutted and completely redesigned her entire space before moving in, she also built her dream closet situation from the ground up.And yes, her beauty game is equally tight (in case you couldn't tell by those bangs—Jennifer Yepez was on deck for maintenance), housed in an assortment of acrylic trays and organizers.

ou have to admit there is something extraordinarily nostalgic and sentimental about fragrances. That moment when a hint of Gap Blue sends you rushing back to those teenage years of rollerblading and tossing down Mountain Dew Big Gulps at 7/11 a la Now & Then, or a whiff of MMM’s Beach Walk’s bottled up sunburnt-skin-soaked-in-salt-and-sand eau transports you to a breezy stroll down a seaside boardwalk.Aside from the saccharine scents of our youth (seriously, what were we thinking?), perfume has one seriously far-reaching history. In the age of the pyramids, the Egyptians would concoct perfume balms for pre-lovemaking preparation.

Talk about romantic.Perfume has one seriously far-reaching history. In the age of the pyramids, the Egyptians would concoct perfume balms for pre-lovemaking preparation. Talk about romantic. But it’s the '40s Hollywood heroines like Jean Harlow adorned with fringe and feather festooned dressing in Dinner At Eight that remind us of a time when a wardrobe of crystalline bottles of fragrances topped every dressing table and dabbing scented oils in the dimples of the neck were a sensual, flirtatious practice. In other words, the mere act of the beauty routine was true glamour.

"I DON’T LIKE TO WEAR PERFUME, SO I’LL JUST MIST MY HAIR AND THEN THAT WILL BE LIKE WEARING PERFUME, BUT MUCH LIGHTER. I HAVE TWO FROM DIOR, THE MISS DIOR AND THEN THE J’ADORE ONE WHICH IS AMAZING."

- Kristen Noel Gipson

But here we are, in a time when barrages of celebucents seemingly erase the seductiveness of what was; when an unsystematic, rushed dousing of your signature scent (count ‘em, one) is the only attention given to your essence. But fear not, friends, perfume houses are resolved to bringing it back to what it used to be (and we couldn't be more excited). You have to admit, incredibly smelling hair—you know, the kind that wafts with every little flip—can stop people dead in their tracks.

So we’ve added a hit of effervescence to the typical spritzing geography; one, two spritz on the décolleté; three, on the wrist, four in the air for a light misting walk through, and five... Between the legs (read: Karley Scortino of Slutever's love advice). Guys, hair fragrance is the best thing since dry shampoo (and we know how life changing that discovery was).

HOW TO GET THE HAIR

BEND ?!

IT’S THAT HIGH GLOSS WAVYBUT-NOT-QUITE-WAVY HAIR WE NEED

Y

ou know it when you see it. It’s that finger-combed, done-yet-undone, “I don’t care” — no, wait, ”I don’t need to care”—hair. That super glossy hair bend The Cut so eloquently dubbed “Rich Girl Hair”. You have to forgive us when we borrow the term, because it’s just kind of too perfect. But guys, we know this girl — hell, we occasionally want to be her. Let’s be real, we too have no time to be bothered with foam rollers or sock buns (‘member those?) or any of those tedious-time-wasting-overnight-or-all-day tools. This hair look is an ode to our ultimate time-stretched and moneyed muse: touchable, soft-as-silk, shiny, slightly wavy, hair that looks as cash-money as the inside of a Saint Laurent bag.And it’s the whole 'approachable luxe' hair thing that the likes of Joan Smalls and Gigi Hadid dial up hairstylist Jennifer Yepez for.

“This kind of hair shows off a girl’s natural beauty: If she has a little bit of curl already, this look celebrates that instead of hiding it or changing it.” So naturally (see what we did there?), we had to find out how to get it ourselves. Here goes nothing, right?Unlike two-day old bedhead and beach hair, this look is all about the squeaky clean, shiny hair. “It all starts with a good serum and healthy hair. I tell all the girls I work with to eat healthy and especially to take a hair supplement. Viviscal is my go-to and it’s worked on me personally. I swear by it.”“The hair needs to be blown out smoothly so that it’s beautifully shiny. The serum and heat protectors are a huge part of that but also the brush.T3 has a great tourmaline brush that helps give the hair that smooth finish and allows the heat to go right through for smooth ends and soft results,” explains Yepez.

What you need? 1. A NOURISHING SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER 2. AN OIL OR SILICONE-BASED HEAT PROTECTANT 3. A VOLUME-CREATING PRODUCT 4. A GOOD BRUSH AND BLOWDRYER 5. A 1” CURLING IRON, PREFERABLY 6. CERAMIC OR TOURMALINE BUT METAL WILL DO 7. A BRUSHABLE HAIRSPRAY OR STYLING CREAM 8. DRY SHAMPOO OR A HAIR POWDER

Rich Girl Hair, hair that looks as cash-money as the inside of a Saint Laurent bag

BLOW IT OUT “The hair needs to be blown out smoothly so that it’s beautifully shiny. The serum and heat protectors are a huge part of that but also the brush. T3 has a great tourmaline brush that helps give the hair that smooth finish and allows the heat to go right through for smooth ends and soft results,” explains Yepez. To keep volume at the crown or your head, try brushing and blowing out your hair forward instead of back. You don’t want it to look like a unified curl but you do want the ends to be smooth and that’s where protecting the hair and smoothing the cuticle out during the blowdry process is very important. The hair looks shiny and healthy without you having to try to make it that way. For girls with frizzy, curly or coarse hair, use a protecting serum on the ends and on the front bits of your hair, especially. Even if you have to go over a few pieces it’ll help create that natural not over-curled look.

“Take a 1” curling iron on a low heat setting and start applying a subtle curl mid-shaft of the hair (from the top of your ears to the bottom). Grab large pieces of hair, small pieces of hair—don’t worry about making things look perfect. It’s not about keeping the iron on your hair for very long, a couple of seconds at most. Even if you have to go over a few pieces it’ll help create that natural not over-curled look. Apply barely-there misting of a brushable hairspray or dab of styling cream to tame flyaways. To keep things moving, spray dry shampoo or add a bit of hair powder to maintain volume on the roots only. “You want volume but you don’t want to tease the hair or use lots of hairspray is because it weighs the hair down,” says Yepez. “The more hairspray you use, the less natural movement you have and that’s what’s sexy and beautiful about this look. The hair needs to be blown out smoothly so that it’s beautifully shiny.”

s anyone who works in fashion... Scratch that. As anyone who has so much as spotted a beautiful gown, handbag or other singularly exquisite, can't-live-without-it inanimate object in a shop window can attest, the industry has a funny knack for forcing even the most rational tethered-to-their-Mint-app types among us into conflating needs and wants. Exhibit A: “My favorite piece from the shoot today would inevitably have to be the beautiful poppy dress. I mean, it would be ridiculous if I didn’t say that poppy dress. It is a sensation. I need it," breathlessly enthused Poppy Delevingne, gazing out our car window. Again, real big emphasis on the need here, guys. After all, the Instagram captions practically write themselves—Poppy in poppies? C'mon. Delevingne, she of the perfectly raspy, sing-song, Kensington-born-and-bred accent, sun-kissed hair, lithe limbs and a host of other attributes that are impossible to list off without sounding vaguely stalker-ish.In town for Fashion Week, we spent an afternoon with Delevingne over at the posh-not-precious Marlton Hotel, playing dress-up in a host of looks from the recent CHANEL couture show.

pastime you just sort of fall into when the aforementioned attributes apply to you). In between looks, the conversation naturally turned to favorite New York haunts, Poppy's first CHANEL piece (she still whips it out from time to time), what we could find in Delevingne's 2.55 on any given day and ditching face wash in place of good ol' fashioned H20. Oh, and, uh, drinking. As you do when it's the middle of fashion week and you're no longer what sure of what day it is. "I love American people, they’re charming. They make really good, really strong vodka tonics. They are really generous on their amounts, which is just really nice of them," laughed Poppy, juggling bar limes between takes. Yeah, that's sounding real good right about now. “Dream New York day? I’d like to squeeze in a Soul Cycle, I'm really aiming to get a butt almost like Gisele’s, so I gotta do that a lot more. No, you know actually, a very interesting person told me the other day that it’s not about. You shouldn’t cleanse in the morning, you should do all of your cleansing at night. Your skin works itself overnight, so when you get up, you should just apply your moisturizer and go. You shouldn’t actually cleanse away all the goodness that you’ve done. In your shower, just wash it with water, no soap or anything. Apparently. And this comes from a very beautiful source, who looks about 50 year younger than she actually is!” All, CHANEL “[I always carry] a vast supply of hair ties, I love nothing more than a topknot. Lip balm! Music, I always want to be dancing. I want to dance through my life so I take an iPod with me everywhere. I was listening to Kasabian’s last album a lot. I saw them once at Glastonbury, years ago and I remember having sort of a renaissance. The thing is when people come to my room and they listen to my music they really freak out. Because they get whiplash. Once second its really aggressive rap and the next second its All Saints and the next second it’s Kings of Leon. It’s kind of intense. That may be partly true, but there are always other factors at play in good fortune. In Delevingne's case, that would be the luck of being born into an English family with a history that's rich in aristocratic connections (Granny was a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret), bona fide style (Mum, in her day, was an ultrachic girl-about-town in London), and money. (Dad is a successful property developer.) Then there's the genetic windfall of a perfect sample-size body and a strong yet lovely face.

Poppy in NY All of the above served as Delevingne's passport to New York, where she moved two years ago from London to further her modeling and acting careers. (As a model, she follows in the tradition of storied English roses like Stella Tennant. Like Tennant, Delevingne caught the eye of Karl Lagerfeld, who made her a Chanel brand ambassador last year.) But in a city teeming with ambitious, pretty blondes in borrowed frocks all posturing to become the next It hit, Delevingne has paved her own charmed path with, well, charm. "She doesn't take herself too seriously, which isn't as common as you'd think..

She looks fantastic in anything and is so much fun. Delevingne muses on the subject, "It would be ridiculous for me to say I am unlucky, but, like any other family and any other girl, I've had my ups and downs." So while Delevingne credits her quirky family for her blithe spirit, the flip side of that party-perfect temperament is weighted with the knowledge of mother Pandora's '70s-era substance abuse, which devolved into a heavy prescription dependency later in life. In fact, the name Poppy is a reminder of Pandora's struggle.

“I love

Channel!

“

About her life

However, when she and her older sister, Chloe, were teens, their parents sat them down for a frank discussion about their mother's harrowing battle. "The best thing that could have come out of her own dark times is her honesty," Delevingne says. Mentioning studies that posit that addiction is hereditary, she says, "We were warned to look for characteristics in our behavior.

Poppy's Life Though living life to the fullest appears to be a family trait, Delevingne specifically credits her mother's triumph over addiction with giving her the courage to move to New York. But if the move was a gamble, it's brought dividends. She has retained her status as the face of quintessentially English brands like Anya Hindmarch, Bamford, and Laura Ashley but has upped her editorial quotient here with photographers like Terry Richardson. Delevingne has been on every important guest list from the Costume Institute Gala to New York Fashion Week's fabulous front row. A few nights a week, you can find her out with her London-based beau, James Cook, or with friends like Lily Donaldson, Caroline Sieber, Jen Brill, Leigh Lezark, Tara Summers, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, and of course Miller on the fashion party circuit. They also make their own good time at the Rose Bar, the Box, or the Standard hotel's chic boĂŽte formerly known as the Boom Boom Room. "I'm not used to going out every single night, which you can do in New York," she says. But she has proved herself up to the challenge of the nonstop social whirl and everything else that life throws at her.

Two things to establish: 1) It’s New York Fashion Week, like, now, and 2) girls gotta eat. We already created a check list for the people who will spend the week on the run from show to show to event to bed and back again, but what about those who, other than the minute-long walk down the runway, are essentially sequestered backstage for hours on end during which intricate Swarovski masks (or maybe just a simple cat eye) are painstakingly applied?

Yeah, we’re talking models and the beautifiers for whom fashion week means not whether or not they were shot by Tommy Ton, but actually making the whole show thing happen (read: makeup artists, designers, stylists, hair gurus, manicurists). As we said, girls gotta eat. As they did last season, Dig Inn, the nutritionally-minded farm-to-table lunch experts, has once again partnered with the CFDA as part of the organization's Health Initiative.

Sarah BRITTON AUTHOR; FOUNDER, MY NEW ROOTS. COPENHAGEN

I

n case you hadn’t noticed from our weeks-long tribute to our favorite recipes, the whole food blog My New Roots has a special place in our kale-loving hearts. So when we heard that founder Sarah Britton was releasing her first cookbook, getting her on Skype (live from her idyllic kitchen in Copenhagen) was our first priority (after pre-ordering our own copy, of course). After admiring her site for so long—it’s pretty much the reason we ever started thinking of chia seeds and flax as pantry staples—there was a lot to discuss. Herein, she talks about her wakeup call and foodie epiphany, the importance of eating seasonally and how we can all eat like her—actually.

Vuala 54

BEAUTY&HEALTH

ON HOW MY NEW ROOTS CAME TO BE: “For those that read the blog, they know that I did not grow up in a household that cared at all about healthy eating. I grew up on a lot of processed foods—just normal foods: hotdogs, boxed cereal. My parents were busy and didn’t like cooking, so that’s what we got. And we survived obviously, but I really had no relationship to food; it didn’t excite me that much. I became vegetarian when I was 16, but I hadn’t done research about what you need to eat instead of meat; I just stopped eating meat and replaced it with bread. I went to France when I was 16 and I literally ate two baguettes a day with Brie or Nutella, and I did not know why I was gaining so much weight. I didn’t know anything about nutrition, clearly.

After I studied design, I kept hearing about this place called Arcosanti—an experimental community in the desert in Arizona. I went for a five-week workshop and ended up staying for a year. That was the first time I’d ever worked on a farm or even been close to what I was eating. Without intentionally doing it, I went on a major detox. I gave up all processed food; I was pretty much only eating what we were growing. I had the craziest wakeup call of my life: I just realized that I had been living in a complete mental fog and feeling really tired and just not well for 23 years of my life. It was a really remarkable time—very transformational. I was living in a cabin that was 8 feet by 8 feet in a forest by this river and I was working on a farm. Although I was super into camping and nature and stuff, being from Canada and everything, I’d never really immersed myself in it for such a long time. Just things like, getting up with the sun and going to bed with the sun—and I started doing yoga every single day.

55

Vuala

When I got back to Toronto, I had no idea what to do with my life. I had this design degree, but I’d just spent a year living in the middle of nowhere and that was the best I’ve ever felt physically.

BEAUTY&HEALTH

I became super into food when I was there just because I was growing so much amazing stuff and using it to cook—this was the first time I’d ever tasted a real tomato, or a real pear, or a real peach. I thought food was really fun after that. Through looking for cooking classes in Toronto, I stumbled upon the private school for holistic nutrition that I ended up going to. I got my certificate and I thought I would go into private practice for holistic nutrition—but I just wasn’t loving it.

Vuala 56

BEAUTY&HEALTH

I’d hang out [with my boyfriend at the time] and we’d talk about all the cool stuff I was learning about: like, oh, you should really try this bee pollen and did you know this about kombucha? One day, when I was extolling the virtues of spirulina, he was like, ‘Sarah, I have an idea. Why don’t you start a blog?’ I remember saying, ‘What’s a blog?’ And he was like, ‘It’s a place where you can put stuff online, so people who really care can listen to you. I don’t really care.’ Our relationship didn’t last long past that, but he gave me the inspiration for My New Roots.” ON THE RISK OF MEGA EXPOSURE: “At the beginning it came out of pure heart space and just wanting to share with the world. And now it’s my job. It’s still total heart space, but I feel a lot of pressure to keep it up, to maintain a certain level of quality in terms of the photographs, the writing, the recipes. I get the craziest emails—they’re so flattering, but at the same time, it’s a lot of responsibility. And I am hard on myself if I put a recipe out and not a lot of people comment. I just feel like I’m under a magnifying glass sometimes. It’s still total heart space, but I feel a lot of pressure to keep it up."

57

Vuala

ON HER RECIPE INSPIRATION: “I get inspiration from a lot of different places. If it’s warmer, it’s something in the garden that I think is really rad. It could be going to the market and finding something I’ve never worked with before, or someone sends me a cool product. Or, today, I have a friend in Copenhagen who owns an organic spice shop and it’s so beautiful—I went in there and just played with different blends and made an Ethiopian spice mix. So I’m going to do a blog post about that!

ON DECIDING TO WRITE A BOOK: “I was the last of my peer group of bloggers to have a book, which I think in the end was good. Random House just happened to come along at the right time. Although I kind of felt like a snail amongst everyone else, I thought I needed to give myself a right amount of time. If I’d known how much work it would’ve been I probably would’ve said no. Being the masochist that I am, I decided not to use any recipes from the blog—they’re all new.

I don’t know where it comes from, honestly, because I don’t come from cooking stock—my family hates cooking. I feel like I’m a conduit. I don’t know how I come up with recipes so easily—it’s pretty effortless. I think the more I cook, the easier it becomes.

I think there’s two or three in the book that are old, and that’s only because they were the favorites and people love them. I came up with a hundred recipesThe point is, I became more connected to the natural environment—the rhythms.

BEAUTY&HEALTH

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF EATING SEASONALLY: “[In terms of seasonality,] I discovered when I was studying nutrition there’s a real link. Eating foods that aren’t seasonal, you really aren’t preparing your body for the external environment and that’s one reason why we can get sick a lot in the winter. If you’re eating bananas and avocados in the winter, or in the summertime if you’re eating a lot of roasted beets and pumpkins, or if we’re eating asparagus in February… When you get fresh food, you don’t have to do anything to it, it’s just delicious. The book is seasonal—it’s using five seasons, in fact, not four. When I was studying holistic nutrition I was very interested in traditional Chinese medicine and their calendar is five seasons—summer is divided up into two: early summer and late summer.” ON PHOTOGRAPHING REAL FOOD: “My background is in painting. My mother is a painter and I went to school for fine art to study painting, and then randomly decided that wasn’t for me and went to Montreal and studied design. I have a very traditional fine arts background. It’s so weird how everything comes together—I use all of my training on a daily basis. Whether it’s color, composition, light, all these things that matter so much. The photographs are not just point and shoot, although I like to think I style them a lot less than other people. I try not to go over the top with the sprinkles and whatever. I don’t use tweezers and I’m not like spraying oil to make it shiny—the food is real and that’s really the way I put the sauce on it. I want to attract people to this kind of eating, not repel them because they think, ‘Oh that looks too complicated or too precious or too hard.’ I’m trying to be as honest as I can-but obviously the food needs to look as beautiful as possible. When the food is fresh and seasonal it just looks amazing on its own.

I'm a really social person and I've ended up doing a job where I'm completely alone.

SMOOTHIE

BOWL RECIPES

A SMOOTHIE BOWL A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY AND YOUR INSTAGRAM LIKES AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH

It's a subject about which we've waxed poetic many times, and yet it still bears repeating: if a Vitamix turns on in your kitchen and no one is around to Instagram the result, did you really make anything? We're pretty sure undocumented smoothies have zero-to-no nutritional value, anyway. Oh, and lets face it: those hemp hearts, flax and chia seeds could all just as well be actually blended into your smoothie as artfully sprinkled in a zig-zag pattern on top. The art of the smoothie bowl is something we're stuck.

with: we're either continually trying to nail it, or rolling our eyes at ourselves for caring about curating our food. And like, does all of this kale and swiss chard even cancel out our Pad Thai from last night? Do we even like kale? Suddenly every alarmist article ever about social media's capacity for causing sudden identity crises and serious FOMO got a whole lot more relevant. In the interest of leaving these matters to the professionals (or at the very least, picking up some serious tips from them).

T

here's really no better way to cap off a week in London than ending the whole thing with an afternoon with model Daisy Lowe. Let's put it this way: she was actually game enough to change into not one, not two, but a record six (!) looks for her portraits: from a leopard print bodysuit to boyish overalls and a killer Saint Laurent jumpsuit she'd been dying to wear for the first time (you're welcome, Daisy. JK... we kind of insisted she wear it). After killing an hour tucking into a massive burger and a pint (when in Rome, et cetera), we made our way to Lowe's Camden apartment, where she welcomed us in with her pooch Monty at her side. After giving us the grand tour, she stepped back into hair and makeup (duty calls).

Lowe's decor and wardrobe were every bit as eclectic as you'd expect, with curiosities ranging from vintage Playboy covers, amethysts and crystals, Byredo and Diptyque candles burning and antiques tucked into every corner. The two high points that really took the (raw chocolate, coconut oil—more on that later) cake, though? Her beauty obsession.

By the time she made her way down to the kitchen, which is fully outfitted with pastel pink Smeg accessories, right down to her mixing stand (ICYMI: she recently-ish released her own namesake cookbook, Sweetness & Light, which reimagines desserts with healthy ingredient substitutes), we'd covered every conceivable corner in Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton (two of Lowe's favorites). But c'mon: girl's the master of that whole nonchalant cool I'm-wearing-combat-boots-in-couture thing for a reason—as a Brit, it's practically her birthright. After killing an hour tucking into a massive burger and a pint (when in Rome, et cetera), we made our way to Lowe's Camden apartment, where she welcomed us in with her pooch Monty at her side. "I feel like I have a real connection with Yves Saint Laurent because—I sound like a total dick saying that—but when I was living in New York, I was about 19, I woke up one morning, the season they did those starry shoes. I had seen them and had been obsessing over them. I’m like this, when I fall in love with an item of clothing, it becomes quite obsessional. I can’t think of anything else. I had this feeling about this pair of shoes and I woke up that morning, and you know when you get woken up really suddenly? You’re all shocked. I was like, 'I have to get those shoes! I have to go get those shoes.' I was living downtown so I got all the way to the store up on Fifth or Park, whatever. Went all the way up there—I think I walked for a lot of it. I was a woman on a mission! Then I found out that he died and he died that day. I had never been to the store before!I had a casting with him at his studio." “My first proper modeling job was for the Agent Provocateur fragrance ads when I was 16. From there I had the bug, I just loved playing dress up and embodying different characters, it took me a while to learn that on a job it’s not about what I want to look like, it's the vision of the creative team in place. For me, that is when high fashion is at its finest, when we get to play in someone else’s pure genius. The seminal moment in my career was meeting Steven Klein when I was 17. I had a casting with him at his studio, and I really am the worst chatter box, so I just sat and chatted about music and clothes and photography with him. From the moment I met him I found his spirit so intriguing, a real gem of the world. I was so lucky that he booked me on my first Italian Vogue shoot following my casting. It totally changed my life. I adored working with him and watching his incredible visions unfold behind the lens.” When I started using it, I had really, really bad acne and now my skin is completely clear. I use that and then I use Ayurvedic moisturizers.

“[When I’m getting

ready for a night out] I usually pick my outfit out first, I make my choices considering the event or what has inspired me that day. From there I work out which way I would like my hair and makeup to look. I don't take long to put on my makeup and do my hair. I think after spending so much time in a chair on jobs I just want to get it on my face and out the door to enjoy what the world has to offer.

"I’ve always had such an obsession with Yves Saint Laurent himself. There was an exhibition of all of his life’s work at Le Petit Palais in Paris, years ago. I was there working at the time; I think it was about five or six years ago. I queued for two hours so that I could go. In the rain! I did not give a flying fuck. It was totally worth it."

“From a very young age, I always remember having crystals around our home. My wonderful Mumma and her best friend, my godmother Zoe Grace, always loved teaching me about crystals. When I moved to New York at 17, I used to stumble upon the beautiful stones along my travels. I love that our earth created them. They are full of so much beauty... and I do love sparkles! My favorite designers are Saint Laurent, Dior, James Perse, Rick Owens, Christopher Kane, Erdem, Dolce & Gabbana, Reformation, Emilia Wickstead, Giles Deacon, Marc Jacobs, Alice Temperley and Céline. Went all the way up there—I think I walked for a lot of it.” "Patti Wilson, you know, if it wasn’t for her and Steven Klein, I probably wouldn’t have a modelling career. Alex White, she styled me a lot for my Steven Meisel shoots. Edward Enninful as well, he styled me for stuff with Steven Meisel. He’s just got a lovely energy about him; he’s such a kind man and British and inspiring! I love working with Fran Burns. She’s extraordinary. And Katie Grand. Katie Grand put me in—was it the first or second issue of LOVE? I think the second, and then I shot for them a couple of more times. Her vision is really cool and really different from everyone else. I think she’s absolutely hilarious. Fran Burns' aesthetic is always something that’s been incredibly inspiring to me. She just loves beauty and she can put together clothes in a way that I don’t think anyone else has the ability to. She sees things in such a beautiful way. Kate Halfpenny helped style me for my most recent London Fashion Week. She’s quite a curvy woman herself, so she kind of understood how to dress my shape. In our appointment, she was like, 'You know what Daisy? You just need to look bionic!' I go, 'Okay...' It was really lovely, someone embracing the fact that I’m not stick thin. And actually, you know what, Kate Phelan. When she was fashion editor at Vogue, she put me in my first fashion story.
