Interview with Timothy Granaderos

from the Series 13 REASONS WHY

Q. How did you figure out you had a passion for acting?

A. My dad always thought I would be an actor, but soccer was my passion. Once I realized I wasn’t quite good enough to play in the MLS, I organically found acting. I actually started working in the industry as a Production Assistant. That’s what got me on sets! I remember seeing how much fun the actors were having, and was immediately drawn to their energy.

Q. Did you grow up in California or you moved there for acting?

A. I grew up in Portage, Michigan. My sister had gotten me a job working on a reality show, so thats what brought me out to California! I packed one suitcase with the intention of going back to Michigan once the show wrapped. That didn’t happen.

Q. Do you remember your audition for “13 Reasons Why?”

A. My manager, Scott Silver, chased this project for me! He knew it was going to be a big one. I actually auditioned for a few other roles before landing Monty. Alex, Tony, and even Jeff Atkins.

Q. What are your favorite moments from filming and why?

A. Whenever we shoot scenes that everyone is in! It is almost like a mini reunion for all the actors.

Q. Can you tell us a few fun/interesting facts that your fans would love to know?

A. I’m Timothy Granaderos Jr. and I have “Jr.” tattooed on my right forearm in my dads penmanship (but I’m also a momma’s boy).

I’m a middle child. I’m a Gryffindor. I got cut from my seventh grade basketball team and I haven’t felt confident on a basketball court since.

Q. Are you excited for season 3, which was just announced?

A. Beyond excited! To be part of a show that has made it to a third season is such a large accomplishment for everyone involved.

Q. I think this show is amazing on so many levels, showcasing how harsh school environment can be - making so many kids out there feel that they are not alone, and giving them hope to fight for justice. What is your favorite part of ‘”13 Reasons Why?”

A. Just that: the opportunity to spark conversations about difficult subject matter and to do it in a real and honest way. Nothing can get better if it’s not talked about!

Q. Where do you see yourself in 10 years and what are some of your goals?

A. Living in a tree house with a zipline into the ocean. Maintaining an acting career that challenges me daily. Having a family! Hopefully owning a cottage back in Michigan. It would also be really cool to start an non-profit that helps with Nature Preservation.

Q. Any advice for those who want to pursue an acting career?

A. Be yourself, because that’s what you bring to the character! Also an acting coach by the name of Bill Howey once told me, “NO FEAR.” In order to succeed in this industry, you have to be fearless. Take chances, make mistakes!
