Men Anyone joining the Men’s section at Maidenhead Golf Club can look forward to a great deal of competitive golf, both against other clubs and alongside fellow Members in club events. Regular rollups are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at a more sociable time of day, starting around 10am.

Within the Club, the major competition is the Peace Cup which is in effect the Club Championship and dates back to 1922. Two Honours Board competitions can be traced all the way back to the late 19th Century and there are nearly 20 trophies played for on an annual basis. Monthly Medals – Strokeplay in the summer and Stableford in the winter – take place at weekends and throughout the year during the week there is a Stableford and a Strokeplay medal every month on a Friday.

One of the challenges that generates much interest is the Border Trophy, a match between Maidenhead Members who represent the country of their birth in an England v Scotland match. In recent years, this has been a 36-a-side match.

No-one wants to be on the losing side in this one, but a very convivial evening follows in the clubhouse. A much more refined competition is

the Chrysanthemum Cup, which is an enjoyable annual fixture that has been played against our Japanese friends the Nippon Club since 1967.

Ladies The Ladies enjoy 22 friendly matches throughout the year. Playing home and away in alternate years, mostly against Clubs from within Berkshire and with some long-standing fixtures among them. These encounters live up to their name of friendlies, with normally a cup of coffee beforehand and refreshments afterwards.

One of the most sought-after trophies is the Challenge Cup

Spring and Autumn meetings, both one-day stableford events, Fourball League, Angela Uzielli Memorial Trophy, Duncan Trophy, a knockout competition played by five golfers per side and the Inter-Club Shield, a oneday Stableford event held in May for teams of three.

Nationally recognised competitions such as the Ping 4BBB, LGU Coronation Foursomes and the Daily Mail Foursomes are always keenly supported.

There are well in excess of a dozen Club competitions, as well as Monthly medals and Stablefords and knockout competitions in the summer for singles and pairs.

One of the most sought-after trophies is the Challenge Cup, which is played for over 36 holes on a single day in September by the 16 best players from three specific qualifying medal competitions.

Seniors Although the qualifying age to be a member of the Seniors at Maidenhead Golf Club is regarded as 60, people in their late 50s are not turned away and no criteria is laid down in matches between ourselves and our neighbours as these are always

friendly and good-spirited affairs where good golf and good company is all that matters.

The Seniors enjoy fixtures against 12 other local Clubs home and away each season, running from the beginning of April right through to the end of September.

The matches are played in the morning, usually on a Wednesday or Friday if at home. Most often these fixtures feature six pairs a side playing Fourball Betterball, though occasionally as many as eight pairs a side can be involved. A convivial meal generally follows.

A book is left in the clubhouse detailing all the Senior competitions across the County which Members may wish to enter and it is left to individuals to take part if they so desire.

Within the Club itself, there is a Seniors Championship which is an 18- hole stableford played in September. The Club runs other competitions which Seniors take part in such as Monthly medals or Stablefords, while the Seniors enjoy informal fourball roll-ups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8am. Enjoyment is always a key element and several more light-hearted competitions are enjoyed such as Texas Scrambles and a Christmas Stableford. Around twice a year some members of the group enjoy a day out at another Club, playing a round of golf and then enjoying a meal together.
