RESEARCH CENTER FOR INNOVATION ON LOCAL MATERIALS Siby, Mali Ludovica Franchetti Pardo, Roberto Rodriguez Martinez Atelier Kéré

The project’s goal is to show how it is still possible to build with local materials in Africa. These techniques have been forgotten because of maintenance problems. The main interest is set on the structure of the roof: the system is composed by dry-mounted steel connections that can be adjusted and fixed to the skeleton of eucalyptus pillars. It creates a modular structure system that can be replicated and adapted to different situations. 6

INSTITUTE OF GERMAN CULTURE New York City, USA Sandro Embacher, Ludovica Franchetti Pardo Atelier Eckert

The project is sited in the heart of New York City, right opposite to the Metropolitan Museum. It is composed of three nucleuses: the cultural institution, facing the 5th avenue, an office building, and an accomodation building for the artists that are being hosted - the whole sistem works as a huge public plaza on the groundfloor.. All the facades are regular and similar to each other, but have a different rithm depending on the function of the single unit. 12

CHAIR ROOM HOUSE GARDEN TREE PLAYGROUND SCHOOL CLASS CHAIR Brussels and Ostende, Belgium Atelier De Vylder

A chair and a tree is what makes a house a home. A chair and a tree is what makes a school a home. Starting from observation, going through imagination, ending designing a house and a school in two Belgian cities. Designing a house and a school but eventually designing two homes, working on large scales but at the same time keeping in mind details and construction, always thinking about life. 20

She closed her book and turned the lights off. It had been very hot and humid all week, and the sultry weather had finally broke into a thunderstorm. It was so pleasant to just lie in bed with such a bad weather outside. She inhaled the delicious smell that rain brings falling on warm concrete. She looked through the windows to check her child’s room. The curtains were closed, but the lights were still on. Through the curtains, she could see the silhouette of her father. She imagined him, smoking a cigar and looking at the sea mist in the dark, breathing the salty air. She closed her eyes and relaxed her muscles, breathing deeply. The light wind was making the curtains move in her room.

Her house was breathing too.

Today it was the last day of school. The last ever! Next year I’ll be studying in another school. I was so happy today when the bell rang! We rushed in the courtyard and celebrated all together the start of summer. We were there, eating in the shade and having fun, and I started thinking that I will actually miss this place a lot. Day after day, the wooden tiles outside, the trees, the playground, the brick walls, have become my home, and leaving it won’t be as easy as I thought it would be. As I exited the gates, I noticed I could easily look over the wall that surrounded the school; I remember the first time I saw it it was much higher than I was.

Funny, I thought, I really did grow up here.

RUINS Craco, Italy Atelier Aires Mateus

The city of Craco had to face a sudden end because of a slow landslide that mad it imossible for the innhabitants to keep living there. The town then became a sort of modern ruin, christallizedit in the precise moment of its abandonment. This is why I decided to tell the story of Craco through images, creating a photographical gallery that shows historical images aswell as recent photographies, that tell us about a time that is not very far in the past but that today exists only in the dimention of memory. 26

HOUSING IN A URBAN VOID Bilbao, Spain Atelier Angonese

The housing complex is conceived as something that develops around an internal courtyard. There is only one access to the courtyard, and from ther eit is possible to access to the staircase. The main material used is the glassblock, thanks to its capacity to take light from the outside during the day and to give it back during night time. 30

BUILDING REALITY WORKSHOP Benga, Mozambique Atelier KĂŠrĂŠ

The village of Benga, in the noth-west of Mozambique, is a very rural and isolated settlement, where education is still very scarce. This year a new school had been founded, and Benga now needs new facilities for the teachers that are coming to work in the school. We lived in Benga for four weeks, and we built a prototype of a minimal living space for a teacher, that can be replicated and turned into a wider program of minimal housing. 34

CHIASSO JAZZ FESTIVAL Chiasso, Switzerland Ludovica Franchetti Pardo, Gregorio Lacchio FIRST PRIZE WINNING PROJECT

The goal of the competition was to create a scenography for the 20th edition of Chiasso Jazz Festival using only some coloured chipboard woods coming from the dismantlement of an exposition curated by Mario Botta. The boards used for the project are hanged from the roof on different levels of depth, so that it is possible to recognize the shape of a pentagram, some notes and a saxophone only from a certain perspective, while from all the other points of view it seems like an abstract composition. 40

SITE LANDMARK Sagres, Portugal Ludovica Franchetti Pardo, Gregorio Lacchio ARKxSITE Competition 2016 - HONORABLE MENTION WINNER PROJECT

The project is concieved as a tower that instead of rising from the ground, penetrates it. The visitor can enter the rock through a very long staircase. During the first part of it there are still windows where you can connect with the landscape; after the first half, it is completely inserted in the rock. At the end of the path, people find themselves in a sort of natural swimming pool where the ocean water can enter, and they can communicate with the main landscape elements: the water, the sky and the rock. 44

LIGHTHOUSE RESORT Capo di Murro di Porco, Siracusa, Italy Ludovica Franchetti Pardo, Sara Villani YAC - Young Architects Competition 2016

The project’s goal is to build a small resort around the abandoned lighthouse. It is concieved as a space made for relaxation and freedom, therefore it is not thought to be too crowded. Small complex apartments, oriented towards different directions depending on the view and buiilt only on one floor, are designed not to ruin the beautiful landscape of the cape. 48

RECOMPOSITIONS WORKSHOP Val Malvaglia, Switzerland Professor Martino Pedrozzi Alpine Architecture Award

The workshop is focused on the rehabilitation of ancient mountain cabins, that now are nothing more than a pile of old stones. The aim of the project is to give back an order to the ruins, to show clearly their previous perimeter and shape. What at a first sight could be confused with just a layer of stones left from the permafrost melting, can now be recognized as an ancient cabin, that reminds the observer of the history of the mountain and of the pasture. 52

FENDA Reporting from the Front - Biennale 2016 Venice, Italy

The theme of the 2016 Biennale exposition was ‘Reporting rom the front’, in which every architect had to ask himself: ‘What my your battle?’. For Aires Mateus, the battle is answering to the ugliness of the world using the simple beauty of the shape. Fenda was a simple dark room with pure white illuminated shapes, abstraction of already existing project or only imagined ones. Visitors therefore found themselves surrounded only by darkness, light and beautiful shapes. 54
