The Joint Studio is an academic partnership between two schools of architecture: the Tsinghua University of Beijing and the Politecnico of Turin. The focus of this year’s work has been the transformation of the Panjiayuan antique market, one of the largest and most famous antique and handicraft markets in China. Vital to the success of the project is the preservation of the distinctive atmosphere, characteristic of the site. The market is distinguished by its variety of people and goods that originate from all areas of the country, making this a unique place within the city landscape. The proposal is for the creation of a building on a enormous scale, that includes the functional, spatial and distributive complexity of a part of the city, something similar to a “megastructure”. In this way all the programs and a mixture of different functions are incorporated in a single container with spaces organised on a human scale. The goal of the project is to create a high density building that at the same time exploits the volumetric availability of the area and leaves public space around it to encourage free flow of people. The architecture of the building aims to depict a modern outlook while using traditional attitudes, methods and design to recreate its spaces, structure, image and ethos. For this reason, the design of the building is composed through the use of market courtyards. These will be of wooden structure, using construction methods of ancient temples while also displaying coloured tiles and façades similar to the most significant buildings in China. Finally, the project meets the requirements of a very complex program working on the organization of different selling typologies that characterised the original market and its relation to the different usage of space, perceived as voids within the entirety of the structure.

The project develops in Cusco, a Peruvian city tracing the narrow valley formed by the Rio Huatanay, characterised by an uncontrolled and huge population growth. The project tries to investigate the hypothesis of the conversion of an old railway line in a metropolitan tramway that runs along the valley, giving rise to a sequence of small central places. The area is situated in a crucial point of the city and is strongly characterised by a residential fabric in close connection with the old town to the north-west and with the axis of the airport to the east. Starting from a complex functional program (including facilities and public services), the project try to imagine new configurations that could pay particular attention to the mediation between private and collective spaces, local and metropolitan mobility. The shopping areas are imagined on the ground floor, while the cultural (library and theatre) and religious spaces (church) are situated on the upper levels. The project area, defined by a triangular shape, provides the opportunity to create a new “empty public space” to service the district. The conflict which emerges from the coexistence of contrasting elements at the edge of the area, such as the river, vehicular and pedestrian traffic, has become the pivotal element in the development of the project. In particular, the reinterpretation of the concept of kancha, typical of Peru, made possible the use of the area as a container of these untapped entities. The initial geometry is not altered: the definition of the edges is resolved by the introduction of walls allowing protection from the chaotic traffic. By means of a rigid location of entrances, placed in an angular position, the crossing of the area is modified, in such a way as to convey the pedestrian traffic inside the enclosure, while the vehicular traffic outside. The triangular system of walls is characterised by the placement of an additional internal enclosure, where public activities find a collocation. A rectangular volume is subtracted, resulting in three “open rooms” of a heterogeneous nature (the secret garden, the pool and the public park). The rigorous geometry of kancha is regularly interrupted by the positioning of accesses which find their culmination in the central heart, where there is a large courtyard square and the tram stop.

The reflections that, from the beginning have been significant in the design phase, have been those related to both compositional and structural criteria as well as practical requirements of a technical-functional nature conditioning, often in a decisive way, the final yield of the bridge and its construction choices. The bridge, as it has been conceived, is a “symbol” that is essential in its context and in particular with regards to the existing bridge. Firstly the typological choice of an arc was dictated primarily by the desire to establish a continuity with the older building, an analogical reference. The use of steel minimizes on the one hand, the visual interference of the new bridge compared with the historical building, creating a dialogue in terms of material contrast, and on the other hand minimizes the visual impact of the work itself, favouring the continuity of the landscape of the city of Millesimo. The two arches forming the base of the new bridge are placed along the axis system defined by the outer sides of Gaietta and are also dominated by dimensions dictated by the presence of specific generating lines, such as those defined by the parapet, whose width is a direct reflection of the arc in the plan (40 cm). A further example is the continuation of the treble paving visible in Gaietta. Even in this case the intervention is characterised by the use of different materials capable of replicating the roughness of the surfaces (concrete in the centre and natural stone on the sides). In this way, the bridge’s final shape is derived through the decomposition of a set of precise lines and in turn results in a work of subtraction, abstraction, selection and reworking of the historical bridge. The specular structure visible in plan is also reflected in the façade; in fact, thanks to the replication of the arches that support the entire structure, the other elements undergo the same process. A double row of piers, which in turn respectively support the crossbeams, are jointed to form a framed structure, on which two edge beams rest laterally. The biggest challenge was to reconcile the technological aspects through the research of standardized profiles, with the nature of composition and the use of rigorous dimensions in order to replicate certain relations.

The project provides for the recovery of a bathing establishment located on the waterfront of Barcola in Trieste, which underwent fire damage in 2008. The superintendence granted for the expansion of the property only allows the design of an outdoor area to service the existing structure which includes furniture design, the interior of the bar, as well as the renovation of the platform on the water that will host deckchairs and sun beds during the summer . It is so thought to exploit the possibility of setting up a new structure on the one hand flexible and removable at any time, and at the same time capable of creating a point of attraction even in autumn and winter. The design of a continuous terrace was an opportunity to fulfil in a single gesture a dual function: that of coverage and protection during the summer as well as a large sea-facing area for the colder months. The first step was to think of a new modular structure of steel profiles that would allow among other things the insertion of large windows sliding along the entire perimeter. For the summer period it was necessary to ensure a cool and ventilated space, so the choice was to devise a system of “sails� outside the above mentioned structure. The system has been studied in order to create a play of transparency within the local area obtained through the provision of a series of perforated modules which become consistently closer in order to provide coverage. This system also allows glimpses of triangular framing of particular views of the Gulf of Trieste thus inviting the visitor to shift its gaze to the open sea.

The thesis proposes a project of outdoor spaces of an old spinning-mill located in Farra di Soligo, now headquarters of a furniture company. It is a landscape project, aiming at the design of an open space, in relation to existing volumes. Conscious of the elements which compose the building, and identifying in them primordial geometric figures, a relationship has been created between the outdoor space and pre-existing spaces, giving a sense of non volume. It has been created, almost naturally, five open “rooms”, which limits have brought to respond to the several needs of users. Indeed, the project provides two entrances divided by employees and visitors, with a direct access to the first and presentation for the second. The first “room” is intentionally recognizable, already from the street. A stone walkway runs alongside a wall in hollow bricks. the wall is punctuated by the presence of a row of hornbeam which is placed in front of the central openings. This strategy prevents the perception of the entire spinning mills, leading the visitor’s gaze to the chimney, symbol of the structure, albeit no longer in use. This is formed by a texture of bricks and a wrap of twisted strips made of weathering steels. The double envelope hosts a spiral staircase that allows one to reach the terrace of the restaurant. From here the visitor can not only enjoy the surrounding landscape, but embrace the entire lot and even imagine the essence of the project. Once arrived at the end of the wall, the perspective opens the view to the main entrance, whose outdoor surface is characterised by a geometric texture made of concrete. This room is also identified by the presence of some “keys” of green meadow, placed in correspondence with every tree. In this way the perception of vertical space, is overturned on the horizontal plane, so as to reproduce the rhythm of openings of the façade. The garden that introduces the visitor to the creek, allows the discovery of a garden behind the spinning-mill, composed of settling tanks. The project includes the reuse of these through the design of double steps: the first being the staircase “of going” and the other “of staying”.It also provides a stage area in front of it, which can be used in occasion of events and promotion of company products.

The city of Trieste is presented as a land included and pressed between karst and sea. The project is developed from the analysis of the karstic band, as a complex system of open spaces. In a first reading these “empty spaces� have been classified in a hierarchy that includes the territorial scale. Starting from the densest karst, it turns in porous shapes, penetrating into the urban fabric. A more detailed reading of the soil, has allowed the discovery of several green textures, which engage a relationship within the context of their location. From this analysis we obtained a catalogue of spaces which are areas dense in character and therefore worthy, too, of an identity. The project focuses on residual space, spaces free of character and the new connections which can be established. Together such residual spaces have just one strategic resource for the redevelopment of public open spaces. It is indeed an area of potential connections within a project which gives back the fragmentary space to an abandoned structure and its unresolved fabrics. The intervention of redevelopment begins with the reorganization of landlocked spaces in the public residential area of Melara, acting as hinge for the creation of a linear park that dialogues with a large system of open spaces, through various connections. The park structures an ecological corridor made from a variety of natural scenarios in which are found urban gardens, orchards, vineyards and spaces dedicated to parks. This system winds along the river Settefontane, whose whole path is flanked by a pedestrian and cycle track. The project proposes further developments, thus providing the expansion of ecological corridors targeted at the reinstatement of these urban fragments as potential sites which connect urban fabric and suburban environment.
