Day C Day Care at Orczy garden Orczy garden is one of the oldest parks in Budapest. It has had a lot of functions during its history, but now is a popular public place with many recreational facilities for all ages. The park’s infrastructure is old and few of the buildings are run-down. My task was to plan a day care center which would be part of the park’s redevelopment. Due to strict rules I had a tight area where I could position the building. I tried not to change the natural surrounding and keep as many trees as possible. The building is made up of three sections. The first is a service division with an entry hall. The second one is the playroom part where four “play box” rooms serve also to break the first section’s monotony. The third section is the garden which is also part of the Orczy park but separated in order to serve as a safe place for children.

Margaret Island is the biggest recreation place in the heart of Budapest. Due to its natural attributes it is separated from traffic and the crowded city. This advantage makes it the most popular place among tourists, citizens and athletes but the approach to it from Margit bridge results in a narrow crowded entrance way that funnels visitors onto the island. My design gives an opportunity to help visitors orient themselves, give possibility to rent sport equipment and provide a place to change into sports clothes. The building has three sections whose positioning was influenced by the terrain. Each section, which are on separate levels, has different functions and are linked by a staircase. The entrance level of the building is on the top level where it appears as a single story structure to fit in with the environment. This is the informational and cafe level. Below that there is the equipment hire and at the bottom is the changing room next to the running track that rings the island. I used brick, steel and glass to fit with the island’s existing architectural character.

Large-scale canteen at Budaรถrs Budaรถrs is an industrial suburb of t h e c a p i t a l o f H u n g a r y. T h e r e a r e lots of greenfield investments in this area to serve Budapest. As part of an industrial park focused on food and beverage services I had to design a large scale canteen/ food preparat i o n f a c i l i t y. In this project the main driver was a sophisticated industrial kitchen. It was important for me besides a strictly constructed layout to respond to external factors. Due to food preparation requirements most of the building is windowless and exterior walls cladding with brick similar to the design of notable historical ind u s t r i a l b u i l d i n g s i n H u n g a r y, e x c e p t for a restaurant portion which glassed in frontage to serve as a bright open consumer place.

The project location is at the Óbuda gasfactory which operated in the 20th century. After the production stopped, the park became abandoned. The rehabilitation of the area, to save and revitalize landmarks started in 2004 and is still ongoing. During the development besides landscaping, remarkable offices, apartments, university and active/passive recreation facilities are evolving here. The building what I redesigned is in the middle of the park. The old building’s position and its spaces makes perfect to be a swimming pool which could serve workers, students and residents. My concept was to use the old building’s huge beautiful spaces as pool area and leave the structure visible. The service division located in a new annex.

apart 9th district apartment house

tment

9th district apartment house Starting in 2000 the 9th district embarked on an urban renaissance urban renewal effort. The area is easily accessible and close to 3 different university schools; medical, economic, technical and also in close proximity to downtown making it attractive for students. Thus this is a model of a proposed apartment building designed primarily for students and fresh graduates. My aim was to create 20 bright and compact living quarters each for 1 or 2 persons. There were two factors that influenced positioning of the building, local regulations and space restrictions. The building is composed of three parts. Two of them residential which are positioned back to back with their fronts bright, airy and open. Different materials are used in harmony with the concept and usage. A solid brick wall forms the back sides while the fronts are made of glass. The third part, sandwiched between them serves as a common stair i.e. access well. To improve energy efficiency and intimacy of each unit there are mobile shading systems which when all closed create a homogeneous surface or a varied one when different units are opened and others closed.

Construction camp at Bernecebaráti This project’s purpose was to bring back an old hungarian tradition, the summer construction camp. This is a good opportunity to design and build something together with a local community. You can practice how to communicate with clients, work as a member of a team and build what you designed. The project location is in Bernecebaráti which is an isolated rural village, and because of that it is not an attractive place among the younger generation, and the population is decreasing fast. Fortunately the mayor realizes the problem and he is trying to develop this region which thanks to its isolation remains rich in natural resources and beauty. Our building is part of this revitalization effort. It is near a main bike path and serves as a resting point and viewing platform. The concept was to use local materials which the locals can reach easily and cheaply, furthermore we choose the type of structure that can be built within a tight deadline. The result was more than us building an edifice, rather we built a fellowship.

Conc

crete Concrete duck There was a concrete workshop in 2012 that I participated in. During this event I met with different kinds of concrete technologies and I could try it in practice as well. At this workshop we didn’t look at concrete just from a building material aspect, but we tried to stretch the limits of what we know about it. We learned how to achieve different textured surfaces, colour and how to form it. At the end of the workshop we had to create an artwork which was to become part of a permanent outdoor concrete art exhibit in the city. team mate: Eperjesi Rita

Conc Concrete canoe

The second concrete canoe competition in Hungary, was in 2013 where professional companies and universities compared their knowledge and strengths. I participated as a member of the Budapest University of Technology Faculty of Architecture’s team. The challenge wasn’t just about building the boat but an actual race on water. Due to us not being professional rowers/canoeists we chose a classic tour canoe shape that we could row safely. The task was a real challenge due to having to use as thin a concrete wall-thickness as possible; the result being 5 mm thick. Due to this fact we had the second lightest boat in the competition. This competition was a good opportunity to experiment with materials and technologies and how to work as members of a team.
