Labor Day 2016.......................................13

From the President As the summer continues, we have made some improvements to our facility. As reported in the last newsletter the sign at the front of the driveway has been replaced. The sign which is brighter, energy-efficient and includes new graphics and rental information, was installed in July. In addition, the lighting in both halls, over time, will be converted to LED lighting. The board continues to look for opportunities to reduce our overall cost of operating the facility.

performed during this weekend. It is also important to note that the 2017 Landestrachtenfest will be hosted at our Cincinnati club and we will need all the help we can get from our membership to help plan and make it a successful weekend. Our 24th Annual Oktoberfest will take place on September 30, October 1, and 2. As always we will need volunteers to help with anything and everything. Remember our Oktoberfest is the one major event that we hold to raise income for the club. Please contact Hansi Weissmann or Wally Waldeck to offer your help.

We’ve had a busy last couple of months. In July, we hosted our Fifth Friday Froth Fest. Our annual Schwabenfest was held in June. A special thank you goes to Roric Schneider and Nick Krummen and to the many members and friends of the club who volunteered their time and efforts to make this event a success. This is an important event that we would like to grow in attendance and increase the income of the club and we cannot do that without the continued support of our membership. Also in June we held our annual Goulash Dinner and Fuchs Tournament, and in May, we held our Dirndl-Trachten Ball. All of these events could not have been possible without our membership’s support and the committees who helped put them together.

Please don’t forget that we hold our monthly general club meetings on the fourth Friday of each month. In October, we will hold our elections for the position of Board of Trustees. This year there will be five positions available for election. There are many other great events happening in the next couple months, all of which are highlighted in this publication. I hope you have a wonderful and safe end to the summer and I look forward to seeing you around the club as we have a busy schedule ahead of us. Sincerely,

Our rental business is starting to pick up for the fall season and we will need volunteers to work the bar and the kitchen. If you have never worked a wedding, you have missed an opportunity to get to know and socialize with different individuals of the club. If you would like to volunteer, contact any member of the board.

Bob Decher   Bob Decher Cincinnati Donauschwaben President

We have a very full calendar in the upcoming months ahead. The annual Landestrachtenfest was held over the Labor Day weekend in Chicago. The club once again sent two buses of adults and youth to participate in the festivities. All of our dance groups

In the News TUG-OF-WAR

This year both the Maysville (August 13) and the Germania (August 28) Oktoberfest have requested that we bring a co-ed team to compete. Being the defending men’s champions of both competitions it would be great to sweep the events this year. We are looking for five ladies to join our tug team. No experience needed, we will train. Come have fun with our team! If anyone is interested in helping us out please call Ed McMasters at 513 470 9461.

CLUB DIRECTORY

The membership would like to extend a thank you to Linda Igel for all her work on the club directory. It has already been a great help for connecting with our club members— THANK YOU!

COME OUT AND BAKE CAKES

On Sunday September 11 we will be baking our famous eight-layer Dobosh and our wonderful walnut Torte for our Oktoberfest. We need as many hands as possible to help make this another successful year. Pick your favorite spot in the kitchen—whether it’s icing cakes or whipping egg whites. Everyone is WELCOME—experienced or beginner. Come any time after 10 AM and we’ll have a great time, compare recipes and talk (and talk and talk…) If you have any questions, please contact Linda Igel at 513-741-4228.

CAKE BOOTH WORKERS NEEDED

Oktoberfest is just a couple month away anyone that would like to help in the cake booth please let me know. Call Helen Hary 513 923 4548 or hary@fuse.net.

15TH ANNUAL FUCHS TOURNAMENT

The 15th annual club Fuchs Tournament sponsored by the Culture Committee was held on June 26 in conjunction with the Father’s Day Gulasch Dinner. Included among the participants were four previous Fuchsmeisters, including reigning champion Fred Lang.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTIONS

Winners of the qualifying rounds (Tischmeisters) were Mike Kurzhals and John Bucher. Karl Themare, Culture Committee co-chair and Fuchs instructor, and Mark Hockl completed the players for the final table. After a spirited round of 16 games, Mike Kurzhals emerged as the winner. Congratulations, Mike, on your first title. Mike is a regular at the monthly Fuchs Club and is the youngest Fuchsmeister since 2004!

COOK BOOK

Additionally, the Culture Committee would like to thank all of the participants for helping to keep this Schwaben-unique card game alive and vibrant. A special thanks also goes to the Gulasch Dinner Committee for sponsoring a free dinner for the winner.

All members are encouraged to come out to our October membership meeting on Friday, October 28 and participate in our elections. This year there will be five positions available for election. All full members are encouraged to come to this meeting and vote for the leadership of our club. The Donauschwaben Frauengruppe has decided to undertake a new cookbook. While the book will be ready for the Landestrachtenfest in 2017, the time to work on it is NOW. We are collecting recipes from the Old World - Heimatland. We are also interested in recipes that you have changed to make them easier to make at home now. If you have treasured recipes handed down from Oma or your mother, we would love to include them in our cookbook. The categories for this cookbook include: vegetables and salads, soup and sauces, main dishes, bread, noodles and dumplings, and desserts. Likewise, we would also love to hear stories about family traditions having to do with meal time. Members of our committee would be happy to come and speak with you or help you translate recipes. If you have recipes or stories you would like to share please contact Debi Tullius at 513-522-3849 or email her at schwowecoach@gmail.com.

In The News DIRNDL BOOTH AT OKTOBERFEST

SCHWABEN SAUSAGE FUNDRAISER

For the past five years, Eva Schott has graciously hosted the Trachten sale booth in the main hall during our Oktoberfest. It is great to see a young ladies try on one of the Dirndl at the sale and it fits; enabling another person to wear the dress and help extend our culture. All sales at the booth go directly back to the club and to date the booth has collected and donated over $5,000. This year, she is looking for more items to sell at her Dirndl booth, especially men’s clothing as it is always asked for. She has already collected shoes, aprons, hats and of course Dirndls, but can always use more. Please contact Eva directly if you are able to make a donation: 513 378 6066. Thank you!

The Donauschwaben Youth Group is once again preparing homemade sausage in November. They will be selling three varieties: regular, spicy, and smoked sausage. Original flavor and spicy flavor is $6 per pound while smoked versions of both flavors are available for $7 per pound. To order, download the Sausage Order form November 2016 on the club website and mail it in to the address listed or email it to Lori Decher at lpd@fuse.net. There is no guarantee that orders placed after October 17 will be honored. Sausage pick-up will be at the Donauschwaben Society on November 6 from 4 to 6 PM. Proceeds from the event will help offset the group’s upcoming travel costs.

JUGENDLAGER 2016: NIAGARA FALLS & TORONTO Written By: Debi Tullius On Wednesday, July 6, 17 members from the Cincinnati Youth Group traveled to Canada for the annual Jugendlager. They spent Wednesday evening and Thursday morning sightseeing in the beautiful Niagara Falls area before finishing the journey to Blackstock, Ontario. They joined 40 other youth at Park Waldheim DS, a Donauschwaben club that is part of the Canadian Verband.

yeast donut. They created new dances and performed them later in the evening. Saturday was topped off by dancing the night away with a D.J.

While in Canada the group spent lots of time getting to know members of the Chicago Donau, Cleveland, Kitchner and Toronto Jugendgruppes through dancing, cooking, playing and sight-seeing. They spend a great day on Friday in the big city of Toronto. They toured their fantastic aquarium, had a lengthy scavenger hunt around town as they looked for interesting tourist sights, and ended the day by enjoying a Toronto Bluejays baseball game (which they won!).

Special thank you to the Toronto Donauschwaben Club for being such gracious hosts and for planning a great trip And also, thank you to all those have supported Youth Group fundraisers in the past—the money raised makes cultural experiences such as this one possible.

It was very hard to say good-bye on Sunday morning, but the Jugendgruppe is looking forward to seeing their new friends again this coming Labor Day in Chicago.

Saturday was reserved for cultural endeavors. We heard informative speeches about the Canadian Stiftung and the facility at Park Waldheim. The group members helped make sausage, potato salad, green beans, and Krapfen, a delicious

6TH ANNUAL SCHWABENFEST Many thanks to everyone who helped with Schwabenfest 2016! Schwabenfest, like all of our events, would not have been possible without the contributions of our members! Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and energy for the benefit of our club. While results are not final, the consensus is that we had another successful festival despite the near 100 degree heat. More information will be available in the future. If you did not attend Schwabenfest 2016, you missed great food, great entertainment, and some warm weather! This year’s festival showcased new beer and cider selections from Christian Moerlein, the introduction of half-meter brats, and the return of our annual ox roast. Entertainment was provided once again by Saffire Express on Friday night and Squeeze Play and Alp’n Zuab’n on Saturday. Schwabenfest is truly a club-wide success. We had over one hundred volunteers – both long-time and new members – who toiled countless hours to put on a first-class festival. We wish to thank all of our booth chairs, volunteers, trustees, friends from the GACL, guests, and partners at Christian Moerlein for supporting Schwabenfest and the Verein! As other sources of revenue have diminished, the growth of events like Schwabenfest and Oktoberfest has become increasingly vital for the Verein. By increasing the success of our festivals, we can ensure that the Verein will

be able to meet its mission for many years to come! Should you have any suggestions or comments related to Schwabenfest, please contact Nick Krummen or plan on attending the Schwabenfest wrap-up meeting which will be scheduled in the near future. Roric Schneider will no longer be co-chairing Schwabenfest, but thank you to him for his help over the last three years! The date and time of the wrap-up meeting will be communicated via Facebook and the Verein email account in the coming weeks. Sincerely, Nick Krummen and Roric Schneider Schwabenfest 2016 Co-Chairs
