My name is Luigi Zanella. My native land is located in the middle of the Lombard Alps, a place where for lot of years the life of people was based on agro-pastoral activity. The ability to adapt and make the most of the few natural and artificial resources turned out to be an indispensable quality for those who lived in this place. Personally I look with great admiration at the rural architecture and their construction philosophy. My “premature” idea of architecture tries to recover these ancient design qualities, both in physical therm and the logic of conception that are hidden in them. Therefore the desire to establish a link with the natural, spatial, social and traditional factors and qualities of a place has always been a strategy that has guided my studies and projects in different scales. More specifically, the main goal is the reinterpretation of these characteristics according to a more contemporary design language. Within the university I had the possibility of working on further architectural theories addressed in the projects of social housing where I have momentarily detached myself from the relationship with the urban context in order to approach the study of new modality of life, new typologies of housing and the construction of avant-garde architectures.

Located in Alserio, this apartment complex is home to three families. The project theme is developed by enhancing one of the most important elements of the Italian agricultural tradition: the stone terracing. The latter in fact is a founding object for the construction of four architectural volumes. A further element that characterizes the project is the system of communications between the different residential areas, which is carried out by a further element belonging to the ancient tradition of connecting systems: the path.

02 URBAN GRAFTING location: Milano, Italy course: Architectural design studio_ master accademy year: 2020 / 2021 professor: Cino Zucchi with: M. Curia
The research concerns the design of a student hostel and a multifunctional space in the center of Milan. The study of the site has allowed the definition of two buildings that serve as “headboards” of the entire block. In so doing the existing void created by a war bombing is mainteined. A zig-zag facade explore the possibility to be in relation with the closed buildings and to be animated thanks to the game of shadows. The theme of abstraction guide the design of the multipurpuse space’s architecture that recall the experience to be absorbed in a river empty of fish, in this case substituted by marble inserts.

The design of a new Healthcare Center investigate the possibility to rethink a physical space where can be develop new way of approach with health. An abbandoned hospital of the ‘70 becomes a container of different boxes which are designed in a way that permit to live different architectural experiences as well the uses. The selfvalues of the old building such as the perimetral envelope and the structures are treated according to a minimalist and crude philosophy in order to be efatize. A tower and a connective gallery becomes a landmark and provide places to support the external activities.

The project is located in the heart of the old town of Como, where in Roman times stood the forum. Over the centuries the original layout has been modified. Our will has been to confront simultaneously with the structure of Roman times but also that of more recent epochs. The project theme includes an L-shaped building, which seeks to enhance the ancient paths of the cardo-decumanus and the old forum thanks to the construction of a new square.

The project involves the redevelopment of an urban area overlooking the Martesana in Milan. The proposed project is based on an innovative idea of residence where the community can share different spaces of high architectural quality. The design of the outdoor space, understood as a “patchwork” of functions and materials, is fundamental. The two architectural bodies are welded to each other thanks to the construction of a walkable platform that in turn allows the achievement of the opposite shore.

SOLUZIONE LEGGERA
Located in the district of Loreto, this project addresses the avant-garde theme of architecture as a flexible object and therefore able to change over time to meet different social needs. The project compares two different technological choices: a more traditional one in brick, and a more modern one in steel. For both we studied an envelope that would guarantee excellent performance in terms of transmittance, phase shifting and attenuation as well as the values of embodied energy. The research has exalted the potentialities and the negatives of the traditional and high-tech construction solutions.
