LONG DISTANCE LEARNING CENTER CRITIC: MICHAEL O’BRIEN, UG4 FALL 2018 +: JESSICA MARTINEZ Location: 30°37’33.0”N 96°20’17.0”W (College Station, Texas)

Callosum is our proposal for Texas A&M’s Global Distance Education Center. This Data Center will be used to expand the university’s outreach, allowing other parts of the world to have access to our educational resources: databases, professors, and interacting with other students. Dominated by a concrete jungle, we wanted to use this project as transitional phase to introduce the city to a new aesthetic. Our team used Cross Laminated Timber to structure the building, tiled with copper panels. The site is located across the university; the area creates a high concentration of pedestrian and car traffic. Our team wanted a design that helps increase the safety of the public, drivers, be interactive with its users, and continue the same symmetry that exists on the site already. The name derived from the anatomy of the brain: “Corpus Callosum.” It is the structure that binds the right and left hemisphere together. This is how our team sees this project; rather than treating the global center and other parts of the world or the university as separate entities, we see it as two parts of the same whole. They are an extension of each other that can allow the two to communicate and exchange information. Through this extension, it will enable outside users to explore the center and create a community. We wanted to allow outside visitors to have access to the Global Center. Our team decided to base the massing to not obstruct the existing circulation. Through this continuity, outsiders will feel more welcomed to enter the building. We incorporated a pedestrian overhead pass. The decision to put this on the western side of the building came from the idea that it would be the least distracting to the drivers.

VR EXPERIENCE CRITIC: VAHID VAHDAT ZAD, UG3 FALL 2017 INDIVIDUAL PROJECT Location: ???, ???

This project speculates design around an often ignored medium: Virtual Reality. We have often rendered our projects in a virtual spaces without ever experiencing the full effect. It started as a drawing of an interconnected labyrinthine and extruding repetitive shapes within the voids. The initial room was pulled slightly apart to interrupts the usual harmony a closed room brings. The first interpretation of the room is distorted by rotating it in different directions to warp the comfort of familiarity. The feeling of a lucid dream is introduced by the translucent flooring, the observer has a sense of falling in a foreign environment.

MIXED-USED PARAMETRICISM CRITIC: VAHID VAHDAT ZAD, UG3 FALL 2017 INDIVIDUAL PROJECT Location: 29°44’55.0”N 95°21’20.3”W (Houston, Texas)

This project is an exploration of the role of parametricism within social housing. The site is centered in the Fifth Ward of Houston, Texas. An area lacking housing for homeless and filled with a gentrified area instead. Parasitic is a mixed-used environment, a tower for upper level temporary housing units and lower level retail space is intertwined with a more permanent housing solution. The tower would be followed by an industrial agenda with shipping containers that can be stacked on top of each other to make room for additional housing. As the shipping containers start to dominate the vertical space, the tower would slowly decay leaving an 8-bit disfigurement. When a “chunk” is removed from the tower to make space for the shipping units, it adapts the color of the superior being. The dichotomy of the two typologies raises critiques about the dangers of capitalist nature to gentrify a city and a bigger critique to Houston’s lack of zoning laws.

Urban Undulations AQUAPONIC CENTER

CRITIC: MIQUEL RODRIGUEZ , UG3 SPRING 2018 +: HANS STEFFES Location: 41°23’06.9”N 2°10’28.9”E (Barcelona, Spain)

The projects primary function is an urban farm, bringing produce into the city center much as the aqueduct once brought water. Barcelona, like many modern cities relies on the importation of virtually all of its food from rural production and agricultural zones. Placing a means of fresh production in the center of the city would guaranteed fresh produce and fish to the four markets within half a kilometer of the site: The Cathedral Mkt, St. Catarina, Carrefour, and La Boquria. The facility uses an Aquaponic system, pioneered in Barcelona by Aquapioneer, to produce both fresh fish and produce. The herbs and vegetables produced would be showcased both a gallery exhibit and in the on site bar, fostering a relationship with the city and inviting residents to reexamine their cultural assumptions about how food is produced. By creating two masses and two plazas we created visual tension in the site defining two separate plazas connected by central circulation. The massing of the building reacts to the context in several ways, massing, form, and the constituent arches. These two volumes were designed to have roughly the shape of mountains in indirect reference two the two mountains that border the city. Historically Mon Juic and Corserola have provided geographic borders to the city as well as means of agricultural production through water and building materials. The massing and form of the building’s reference to the mountain further solidifies the references made in the program and further links the building to its context.

ORNAMENTATION AS CRIME CRITIC: GABRIEL ESQUIVEL/ JORIS PUTTENEERS , UG4 SPRING 2019 +: ANNA COOK, BENJAMIN HERGURT, COURTNEY WARD, FRANCISCO ANAYA Location: ∞, ∞

This project speculates on a prison in the post-singularity era. The prison is occupied by both humans and AI who have committed cyber crimes, and is governed by a council from both species. As a prisoner is admitted to this center, they are interviewed and assessed based on the severity of their crimes and their initial degree of contrition. Once this information has been obtained, they are sent to a specific chamber of the prison and exposed to a customized VR simulation. This reflects Foucault’s assertion within Discipline and Punish, in which the prison begins to operate in the same typology of the factory or school where one is subjected to the normalizing gaze. In creating this new prison typology, we are reinterpreting Foucault’s anthropocentric basis to fit the conditions of a post-singularity and post-anthropocentric society where the effects reach both human and AI. This new ontology of cyber crimes is resolved through the progression within the prison from admittance to reintegration to society. A prisoner must pass through a series of chambers and experience parts of the simulations taking place in them before arriving at their own customized VR simulation. This is further discussed by Foucault’s analysis that the current prison system has begun to transfer from the punishment of the body into one that is centered on the punishment of the mind and the intent to commit crime. This model is based in cities and can be implemented in multiple locations throughout the world as needed. Each model will be tethered to the city but floating above it, and thus acts as both a panopticon and a reflection of crime rates within the city. The physicality of these tethers is based on the psychological phenomenon known as the Hawthorne effect in which individuals modify an aspect of their behavior in response to their awareness of being observed. This progresses past Foucault’s analysis of the treatment of prisoners and the effects of their separation from society by providing a solution in the form of a post-heterotopic existence: an in-between space that acts as a way to not only alter an individual criminal, but as a way to repurpose the influence of the prison on society. Final Presenation

aesthetic_agenda //The aesthetic agency is realized through an interpretation of ornament through VR generation. This is articulated through the appearance of sculpted surfaces organized into a hierarchy of elements read as a continuous whole. This ornamental evolution follows a grotesque interpretation in which fear and awe are intertwined through the asymmetrical expression of over-exaggerated repetitive elements.//
