STUDIO VARA | HEALDSBURG RESIDENCE | "THE WRAPPER" + Septem b er 20 18 - May 2022 Like the hardened shell of an insect, the Wrapper, a.k.a. the Carapace Retreat, gets its names from the rugged dark zinc exterior that envelopes the form. While giving the site a dark elegance that draws the eye, the outer carcass provides a resilient shelter in this site in Northern California, known to be vulnerable to wild fires. The mass is thoughtfully sited on a hilltop creating a barrier along the steep hillside, while capturing views of nearby valleys and optimizing passive ventilation. The continuous pitched section, punctures in the form, and various screening methods deliberately control
solar exposure and strategically allows light to creep in. The horizontality of the volume breaks at its center, while splitting the geometry into two parts. At the pivot-point, a hybrid breezeway is born, fit with the capability to completely close down and keep out the rattlesnakes and occasional mountain lion (if that sort of thing concerns you.) The break also clearly defines two separate mirrored masses that each house a programmatic family married under the wrapper: the living wing and the bedroom wing. Once inside, a tribute to the old “cabin-style” way of construction is revealed; a method utilizing the glu-lam posts

FLOOR PLAN OVERALL The main-house is composed of 5 bedrooms and 4 1/2 baths. The living room and kitchen have outdoor counterparts that are organized as direct extensions of themselves allowing for inhabitants to smoothly transition their everyday indoor lives to a 24/7 outdoor hangout. Accompanying the main-house, the Pool house mimics the main sectional form and is accompanied by an infinity-edge pool and lounge area. The overhang covers the huge concrete fire table and frames a blackened steel outdoor kitchen oven all while encompassing an extra full bathroom, storage and car port.

STUDIO VARA | GOETHE INSTITUTE SF | THE POST COVID HYBRID WORK SPACE + O ctob er 202 1 - Januar y 2022 The Goethe Institute is a non-profit German cultural association operational worldwide with 159 institutes, promoting the study of the German language abroad and encouraging international cultural exchange and relations. Around 250,000 people take part in these German courses per year. The Goethe-Institut fosters knowledge about Germany by providing information on German culture, society and politics. This includes the exchange of films, music, theatre, and literature. Goethe cultural societies, reading rooms, and examination and language centres have played a role in the cultural and educational policies
of Germany for more than 60 years. Goethe’s headquarters, based in Berlin, came to VARA with the intent of moving their SF office from a large, divided space into a smaller yet more open space. This was partly because of the financial strain of keeping up with increasing rental costs for a large space with nobody working in it (since everyone was working remotely), as well as all of the other challenges of working in the strange new covid world. With the light at the end of the pandemic in sight, Goethe SF needed to get a head start on what the new reality of the post covid hybrid work space would look like for them.

To begin visualizing what Goethe’s new space would look like and program, that could only be done at Goethe (as opossed to done most importantly, how it would operate, a workshop was created remotely), into the new space. As shown above in the “Space to first identify how they would fit their existing program and the Test Fitting Strategies,” these three strategies in essence were square footage that came along with it, into the much smaller eliminating spaces, reducing space size, and/or hybridizing spaces. square footage of the potential spaces up for lease. Through this We collectively agreed that these were the only reasonable strategies collaborative and interactive effort, a potential space was identified available for moving their practice into a smaller home and so we moved 022forward with developing schemes for how to do so architecturally. and three strategies were developed to fit the most essential

STUDIO VARA | SEALE AVENUE | A BATHROOM OF ALL TRADES + D e cem b er 2020 - Aug ust 202 1 After an unfortunate incident involving a rouge fire sprinkler system, the clients of this Seale Avenue project in Palo Alto CA. needed to repair their home and in the process, saw an opportunity to remodel their Primary Bathroom all in one go. This also provided the opportunity to take on a new role as Job Captain, working directly under my Principal, to help manage the Primary Bathroom renovation. Managing this project meant communicating directly with a very illusive contractor and overseeing his work,
maintaining client expectations, producing numerous design presentations, and generating official construction documents. The two main design elements in the space that needed to be conceptualized were the main vanity with two sinks and a makeup table directly across from it. The vanity was to be a monolithic mass fixed upon the wall, and inversely the makeup table was envisioned as a bright and rounded piece sculpture nestled within a niche in the opposite wall, contrasting from the dark floor beneath it.

Notational Interstice Extrusion Model (MODULOR) Exploded 3D Rhino Model
M AST ER ’ S PRO JECT | S PATIAL S O U ND | T HE T RA N SLAT ION BE T WE E E N M USI C & A RCH I TEC TU R E + Ma y 201 7 - May 2018 Architects and Musicians are two professional artists that, through the culturally erected barriers that separate their art-forms, nevertheless use similar language, philosophy, and character in achieving a final product, whether it be a building or piece of music. We live in a culture that unconsciously favors the eye over the ear when theoretically they go hand in hand. Architecture represents the art of design in space, as music represents
the art of design in time, but the properties of space and time are inseparable. Without space and time, matter cannot exist. Space gives form and proportion, and time supplies it with life and measure. Rather than be a definitive and exhaustive study of the similarities of music into architecture, this study, as an ongoing and developing investigation, will attempt to provide one example of how a piece of music can be specifically translated into space and vise versa.

MASTER’S PROJECT MASTER’S PROJECT MASTER’S PROJECT MASTER’S PROJECT MASTER’S PROJECT Spatial Exploration with Architectural Language 3D Printed forms anchored on plaster molded ground
FINAL MODEL The final model combines the MODULOR sections together with previous Mahler hand drawn diagrams through controlled lofts and extrusions. This was performed in Rhino to create a 3D printed promenade of spaces specifically for listening. Being that the main focus of the research was on translation into form, the final model does not reside at a specific site or location on earth. Instead, the model floats above a molded ground whose contours respond directly to the fluidity of form above. The ground was first hand molded in clay to intuitively control where it might rise or fall: a reaction to the music on the interior and the formal expression on the exterior, then plaster casted and thus frozen in time. For example, when the sound scoops of the large performance space from above opened to allow sound to escape, the clay below depressed to capture reverberation and allow for enhanced acoustical experiences below. The reverberation of interior sounds escaping the instillation intrigue the flanuer on the exterior to find their way in, or to recall their previous experience within. The final model breaks into 6 sections to allow for a better spatial understanding of how the sections were joined. The final construct is a merger of music and space and in theory, breaks language barriers and unifies the understanding between Architects and Musicians.
