A LANDSCAPE IN A DWELLING
Perspectives
TOP LEFT - Full height atrium and vortex staircase MIDDLE LEFT - Dining and living room BOTTOM - Tree sketch from research phase TOP RIGHT - Terrace Plans BOTTOM RIGHT - Terrace long section
The “Landscape in a Dwelling” project involved a client with a connection with the Royal Botanical Gardens and an existing terrace house with physically constraining dimensions. The proposal aims to maximise the sense of space by skewing the rooms to allow for greater spans of walls and to give a sense of flow through the dwelling.
PROJECT KEY POINTS SPATIAL ORGANISATION: Skewing of the walls to elongate the possible lines of sight through the relatively narrow terrace. Movement through spaces becomes a “meandering” similar to that in the Royal Botanical Gardens. CIRCULATION: A central atrium accomodates the feature staircase and creates a focal point and connection between the floors.

2011 WONDER ROOM Peeking into the Wonder Room The “Wonder Room” seeks to convert a 1m cube envelope into a capsule that promotes creative thinking. The proposal takes its cue from an existing structural column, reinforcing its heroic proportions through the repeated modulation at a smaller scale.
PROJECT KEY POINTS FORM: Repeated circular timber units are “extruded” from the floor and ceiling plane anchoring the installation to the fabric of the building. This modulated unit echoes the structural column that is encompassed by the room. FUNCTION: The installation possesses sculptural qualities that reinterprets the perception of the structural column as an obstruction within the gallery space into the hero of the Wonder Room.

2011 STUDENT HOUSING The “Blackwattle Bay Student Housing project involves an existing silo that is to be converted into a vibrant student housing complex. A precedent study of surrounding student accomodations revealed an emphasis on the communal style of living. Having identified this, the proposal puts the student lifestyle at the forefront with an emphasis on the celebration of community. The provision of ample shared zones promotes and nurtures the unique qualities of student interactions.
PROJECT KEY POINTS SANDWICH CONCEPT: Private accomodation is sandwiched between a series of open communal spaces designed to encourage healthy social living. The top floor epitomises this in a large shared living and dining zone that takes advantage of the views towards the Sydney skyline. PRIVATE TO PUBLIC GRADIENT: The bedroom pod serves as the most private space which then branch off to a shared living and dining between two pods. On the other end of the gradient are the communal spaces shared by all students.

2012 WINE BAR PHASE 02 Diezzion Wine and Tapas Bar embraces the unique Sydney urban fabric and transforms the historic building on Bulletin Place into a sanctuary for wine. This is done through the insertion of a large undulating wall structure that creates an intensified threshold between the city and the bar/restaurant. The wall defines a new volume, internally lit and pulsating with the energy of the programs happening within.

The laneway has been identified to function as a thoroughfare and as a shared “thread” of the surrounding buildings, what this proposal aims to do is turn the laneway into a destination.
Second Floor First Floor
Ground Floor PROJECT KEY POINTS”
THRESHOLD: The insertion of a second undulating architectural fabric clad wall defines a full height void that recognises the scale and rhythm of the historic facade. DESTINATION: The larger scale of the second floor is topped with a large skylight that punctures through the ceiling plane revealing the surrounding urban fabric.

2012 WINE BAR - FURNITURE CONCEPTUALISATION PROJECT KEY POINTS”
FLEXIBILITY: The segmented nature of the planes allows for various arrangements to suit different function and event requirements. INTEGRATION: The triangular form of the furniture blades allows them to dissolve seemlessly into the undulating wall structure as an internal skin.

ORIGAMI FURNITURE
CONCEPT - ORIGAMI “FOLDING” The concept of origami encapsulates the folding qualities of the furniture piece. The unit consists of a triangular plane segmented into triangular pieces that can fold in various directions allowing each piece to take on several functions. The furniture pieces define the inner wall and anchor off the main design interventions outlined in Phase 02 of this project.

MODEL MAKING CONCEPTUAL Model making has been a core skill in visualising the spatial and volumetric qualities of architecture and the envelopes created that the interventions of interior architects subsequently occupy. Conceptual models are crucial in the initial stages of design.

Winning Design 2012
The concept behind the winning design is to represent the creative thought process of the interior architect. This notion of “thought has been abstracted into a multitude of lines and the circular silhouette they define makes symbolises the building envelope in which our designing occurs within.

EXHIBITION IDENTITY 2012
INTERIORSPECTIVE EXHIBITION IDENTITY The graphics team for the annual Interiorspective exhibition was required to organise and design the visual identity of the exhibition. The proposal consists of an installation within the gallery space with yellow tape that connects the “threads” of ideas between the four year groups and presents them as a cohesive evolution of ideas through the progression of the program. These threads also serve as navigational aids, an issue that was identified at previous exhibitions.
CONCEPT The underlying concept behind the identity was the “conceptual stage” which was identified as a stage that is often overlooked at the exhibition of the final design projects. The aim of this was to recognise and celebrate the raw and abstract nature of these initial conceptual stages as pivotal to the end product.
